“The day is beautiful” simply states a fact. But “What a beautiful day!” bursts with feeling. Same idea, yet the second one carries a joy and wonder that the first one cannot. Turning a plain statement into a sentence full of emotion, without changing its meaning, is exactly what assertive to exclamatory transformation is about.
It is a favourite question in SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams, and the best part is that it runs on a small set of fixed patterns. Learn the patterns, and you can transform almost any sentence, sometimes without even understanding it. This lesson gives you every rule, a master chart, teacher-style explanations, and thirty exercises with answers.
“The day is beautiful” কেবল একটি তথ্য বর্ণনা করে ‘যে দিনটি সুন্দর’। কিন্তু “What a beautiful day!”
What is an Assertive Sentence?
An assertive sentence, also called a declarative sentence, simply states a general action, event, fact, or opinion of daily life. It can be affirmative or negative.
একটি assertive sentence, যাকে declarative sentence ও বলা হয়, কেবল দৈনন্দিন জীবনের একটি সাধারণ কাজ, ঘটনা, তথ্য বা মত বর্ণনা করে। এটি হাঁ-বোধক বা না-বোধক হতে পারে।
Examples:
- The morning is very fine today.
- Your latest story is very interesting.
Structure: Subject + verb + object + adjunct.
What is an Exclamatory Sentence?
An exclamatory sentence expresses a sudden, strong emotion, joy, sorrow, wonder, or praise, and it always ends with an exclamation mark. Learn more in our lessons on the kinds of sentences and punctuation marks.
একটি exclamatory sentence একটি হঠাৎ, প্রবল আবেগ প্রকাশ করে, আনন্দ, দুঃখ, বিস্ময় বা প্রশংসা, আর এটি সবসময় একটি বিস্ময়চিহ্ন দিয়ে শেষ হয়।
Examples:
- What a nice bird it is!
- Hurrah! We have won the final match!
Structure 1: What / How + adjective + noun + subject + verb + ! Structure 2: Exclamation word + ! + subject + verb + object + extra.
Note: in the first structure, the verb comes at the very end, just before the exclamation mark.
মনে রেখো: প্রথম গঠনে verb টি একেবারে শেষে আসে, বিস্ময়চিহ্নের ঠিক আগে।
The Golden Points to Remember
Keep these three points in mind throughout this lesson.
পুরো পাঠ জুড়ে এই তিনটি বিষয় মাথায় রাখো।
- Never change the meaning of the sentence; only the structure changes. (কখনো বাক্যের অর্থ বদলিও না, শুধুমাত্র বাক্যের গঠন পরিবর্তন করতে হয়।)
- An exclamatory sentence may begin with ‘What’ or ‘How’, or with an exclamation word like Hurrah!, Alas!, Bravo!, or Fie! (একটি exclamatory sentence শুরু হতে পারে ‘What’ / ‘How’ দিয়ে অথবা ‘Hurrah!, Alas!, Bravo!, or Fie!’ এর মত বিস্ময়সূচক শব্দ দিয়ে।)
- Never forget the exclamation mark (!) at the end. (‘What’ / ‘How’ দিয়ে বাক্য শুরু হলে বাক্যের শেষে বিস্ময়চিহ্ন (!) বসাতে ভুলো না)
What or How? The Key Choice
The first decision is always ‘What’ or ‘How’. The rule is simple: use ‘What’ when a noun is involved (usually with ‘a/an’ before the adjective), and use ‘How’ when only an adjective or an adverb is involved (with no ‘a/an’).
প্রথম সিদ্ধান্ত সবসময় ‘What’ না ‘How’। নিয়মটি সহজ: যখন একটি noun জড়িত থাকে (সাধারণত adjective এর আগে ‘a/an’ সহ) তখন ‘What’ ব্যবহার করো, আর যখন শুধু একটি adjective বা একটি adverb জড়িত থাকে (‘a/an’ ছাড়া) তখন ‘How’ ব্যবহার করো।
- What + a/an + adjective + noun: What a fine bird it is!
- How + adjective: How fine the bird is!
- How + adverb: How beautifully she sings!

The Rules with Examples
Now study each rule with its explanation and examples. The changing parts are in bold.
এবার প্রতিটি নিয়ম তার ব্যাখ্যা ও উদাহরণসহ পড়ো। পরিবর্তিত অংশগুলো মোটা অক্ষরে দেওয়া আছে।
Rule 1: With a/an becomes What
- When the assertive sentence has ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the adjective (a very fine, a great), start the exclamatory sentence with ‘What’. Keep the same ‘a/an’, the adjective, and the noun, then place the subject and verb at the end with an exclamation mark. Drop the word ‘very’.
- যখন assertive বাক্যে adjective এর আগে ‘a’ বা ‘an’ থাকে (a very fine, a great), exclamatory বাক্যটি ‘What’ দিয়ে শুরু করো। সেই একই ‘a/an’, adjective ও noun রাখো, তারপর subject ও verb কে শেষে একটি বিস্ময়চিহ্নসহ বসাও। ‘very’ শব্দটি বাদ দাও।
Examples:
- Assertive: It is a very interesting story.
- Exclamatory: What an interesting story it is!
- Assertive: The boy is a great fool.
- Exclamatory: What a great fool the boy is!
Rule 2: Without a/an (Adjective) becomes How
- When there is no ‘a/an’ and the key word is an adjective, start with ‘How’. Put the adjective right after ‘How’, then the subject and verb, and end with an exclamation mark. Again, drop ‘very’.
- যখন কোনো ‘a/an’ নেই এবং মূল শব্দটি একটি adjective, ‘How’ দিয়ে শুরু করো। ‘How’ এর ঠিক পরে adjective বসাও, তারপর subject ও verb, আর একটি বিস্ময়চিহ্ন দিয়ে শেষ করো। আবারও, ‘very’ বাদ দাও।
Examples:
- Assertive: The girl was very beautiful.
- Exclamatory: How beautiful the girl was!
- Assertive: The weather is very pleasant today.
- Exclamatory: How pleasant the weather is today!
Rule 3: With an Adverb becomes How
- When the key word is an adverb that tells how something is done (beautifully, politely, bravely), also start with ‘How’, but put the adverb after it, then the subject and verb. This manner form is the one many books forget, so learn it well.
- যখন মূল শব্দটি একটি adverb যা কীভাবে কিছু করা হয় তা বলে (beautifully, politely, bravely), তখনও ‘How’ দিয়ে শুরু করো, কিন্তু এর পরে adverb বসাও, তারপর subject ও verb। এই manner রূপটি অনেক বই ভুলে যায়, তাই এটি ভালোভাবে শেখো।
Examples:
- Assertive: She sings very beautifully.
- Exclamatory: How beautifully she sings!
- Assertive: The soldiers fought very bravely.
- Exclamatory: How bravely the soldiers fought!
Rule 4: I wish / I desire becomes If / Had / Would that
- When the sentence begins with ‘I wish’ or ‘I desire’ (an unreal wish), replace it with ‘If’, ‘Had’, ‘Would that’, or ‘O that’, and rewrite the rest as it is. Do not forget the exclamation mark.
- যখন বাক্যটি ‘I wish’ বা ‘I desire’ (একটি অবাস্তব ইচ্ছা) দিয়ে শুরু হয়, এটিকে ‘If’, ‘Had’, ‘Would that’, বা ‘O that’ দিয়ে বদলাও, আর বাকিটা যেমন আছে তেমন আবার লেখো। বিস্ময়চিহ্ন ভুলো না।
Examples:
- Assertive: I wish I were a king.
- Exclamatory: Would that I were a king! (or If I were a king!)
- Assertive: I wish I had a palace like this.
- Exclamatory: Had I a palace like this!
Rule 5: I hope becomes If
- When the sentence begins with ‘I hope’ (a real hope, something that can happen), replace it with ‘If’ only, and rewrite the rest. Here you cannot use ‘Had’, ‘Would that’, or ‘O that’.
- যখন বাক্যটি ‘I hope’ (একটি বাস্তব আশা, যা ঘটতে পারে) দিয়ে শুরু হয়, এটিকে শুধু ‘If’ দিয়ে বদলাও, আর বাকিটা আবার লেখো। এখানে তুমি ‘Had’, ‘Would that’, বা ‘O that’ ব্যবহার করতে পারবে না।
Examples:
- Assertive: I hope you do well in the next exam.
- Exclamatory: If you do well in the next exam!
Rule 6: A Matter of Joy becomes Hurrah!
- When the sentence starts with ‘It is a matter of joy that’ or ‘We rejoice that’, replace that whole phrase with ‘Hurrah!’, add the exclamation mark, and rewrite the rest.
- যখন বাক্যটি ‘It is a matter of joy that’ বা ‘We rejoice that’ দিয়ে শুরু হয়, সেই পুরো phrase টিকে ‘Hurrah!’ দিয়ে বদলাও, বিস্ময়চিহ্ন যোগ করো, আর বাকিটা আবার লেখো।
Examples:
- Assertive: It is a matter of joy that we have won the match.
- Exclamatory: Hurrah! We have won the match!
Rule 7: A Matter of Sorrow becomes Alas!
- When the sentence starts with ‘It is a matter of sorrow that’ or ‘It is a matter of regret that’, replace that phrase with ‘Alas!’, add the exclamation mark, and rewrite the rest.
- যখন বাক্যটি ‘It is a matter of sorrow that’ বা ‘It is a matter of regret that’ দিয়ে শুরু হয়, সেই phrase টিকে ‘Alas!’ দিয়ে বদলাও, বিস্ময়চিহ্ন যোগ করো, আর বাকিটা আবার লেখো।
Examples:
- Assertive: It is a matter of sorrow that his father died last night.
- Exclamatory: Alas! His father died last night!
Rule 8: A Matter of Praise becomes Bravo!
- When the sentence starts with ‘It is a matter of praise that’, replace that phrase with ‘Bravo!’ to express applause or admiration, add the exclamation mark, and rewrite the rest.
- যখন বাক্যটি ‘It is a matter of praise that’ দিয়ে শুরু হয়, প্রশংসা বা মুগ্ধতা প্রকাশ করতে সেই phrase টিকে ‘Bravo!’ দিয়ে বদলাও, বিস্ময়চিহ্ন যোগ করো, আর বাকিটা আবার লেখো।
Examples:
- Assertive: It is a matter of praise that she has topped the class.
- Exclamatory: Bravo! She has topped the class!
Rule 9: A Shameful Thing becomes Fie! Fie!
- When the sentence starts with ‘It is shameful that’, replace that phrase with ‘Fie! Fie!’ to express disgust, add the exclamation mark, and rewrite the rest.
- যখন বাক্যটি ‘It is shameful that’ দিয়ে শুরু হয়, ঘৃণা প্রকাশ করতে সেই phrase টিকে ‘Fie! Fie!’ দিয়ে বদলাও, বিস্ময়চিহ্ন যোগ করো, আর বাকিটা আবার লেখো।
Examples:
- Assertive: It is shameful that you have told a lie.
- Exclamatory: Fie! Fie! You have told a lie!
A Note on ‘enough’ (Advanced)
At the admission and job level, you may meet an ‘adjective + enough’ sentence. Change it with ‘How + adjective + of + the objective form of the subject + to’.
ভর্তি ও চাকরির পরীক্ষায়, তুমি একটি ‘adjective + enough’ বাক্য পেতে পারো। এটিকে ‘How + adjective + of + subject এর objective রূপ + to’ দিয়ে বদলাও।
Example:
- Assertive: He was foolish enough to trust the stranger.
- Exclamatory: How foolish of him to trust the stranger!
The Reverse: Exclamatory to Assertive
Exams also ask the opposite: change an exclamatory sentence back into an assertive one. Simply reverse each rule. ‘What / How’ returns to ‘very’ with ‘a/an’ as needed, ‘Hurrah!’ returns to ‘It is a matter of joy that’, ‘Alas!’ to ‘It is a matter of sorrow that’, and so on.
পরীক্ষা উল্টোটাও জিজ্ঞেস করে: একটি exclamatory বাক্যকে আবার assertive এ পরিণত করা। শুধু প্রতিটি নিয়ম উল্টে দাও। ‘What / How’ প্রয়োজনমতো ‘a/an’ সহ ‘very’ তে ফেরে, ‘Hurrah!’ ফেরে ‘It is a matter of joy that’ এ, ‘Alas!’ ফেরে ‘It is a matter of sorrow that’ এ, এভাবে।
Examples:
- Exclamatory: What a fine picture it is!
- Assertive: It is a very fine picture.
- Exclamatory: Alas! The old man is dead!
- Assertive: It is a matter of sorrow that the old man is dead.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Never change the meaning; only the structure changes. (কখনো বাক্যের অর্থ বদলিও না, শুধুমাত্র বাক্যের গঠন পরিবর্তন করতে হয়।)
- Do not forget the exclamation mark at the end. (বাক্যের শেষে বিস্ময়চিহ্ন দিতে ভুলো না)
- Use ‘What’ with a noun (and a/an), and ‘How’ with a lone adjective or adverb. (noun থাকলে ‘What’ বসে আর adjective / adverb থাকলে ‘How’ বসে)
- Drop the word ‘very’ when you use ‘What’ or ‘How’. (‘What’ / ‘How’ যখন বসাবে তখন এর সাথে ‘very’ শব্দটি বাদ দাও)
- Remember the verb usually comes at the end in the What/How structure. (মনে রেখো, What/How এর বাক্যে verb বাক্যের শেষে বসে)

A Tip for the Exam
The secret to this topic is to find the signal first, then swap it. If you see ‘a/an’ before the adjective, use ‘What’; if not, and it is an adjective or adverb, use ‘How’; and drop ‘very’ either way. If the sentence opens with ‘I wish’, use ‘If / Would that’; with ‘I hope’, use ‘If’. And for the feeling phrases, just swap the phrase for its interjection: joy for Hurrah, sorrow for Alas, praise for Bravo, and shame for Fie. Keep the rest of the sentence untouched, add the exclamation mark, and the meaning stays exactly the same.
Assertive to Exclamatory Sentence পরিবর্তনের রহস্য হলো আগে সংকেত শব্দ খুঁজে বের করা এবং তারপর সেটি বদলে দেওয়া। adjective এর আগে ‘a/an’ দেখলে ‘What’ ব্যবহার করো; না থাকলে, আর সেটি adjective বা adverb হলে ‘How’ ব্যবহার করো; আর দুই ক্ষেত্রেই ‘very’ বাদ দাও। বাক্যটি ‘I wish’ দিয়ে শুরু হলে ‘If / Would that’ ব্যবহার করো; ‘I hope’ দিয়ে হলে ‘If’। আর অনুভূতির phrase গুলোর জন্য, শুধু phrase টিকে তার interjection দিয়ে বদলাও: আনন্দে Hurrah, দুঃখে Alas, প্রশংসায় Bravo, আর লজ্জায় Fie। বাক্যের বাকি অংশ অপরিবর্তিত রাখো, বিস্ময়চিহ্ন যোগ করো, আর বাক্যের অর্থ যেন হুবহু একই থাকে।

Frequently Asked Questions
What is assertive to exclamatory transformation?
It is changing a plain statement (an assertive sentence) into a sentence that expresses strong emotion (an exclamatory sentence) without changing the meaning, such as “The day is beautiful” into “What a beautiful day it is!”.
When do I use ‘What’ and when ‘How’?
Use ‘What’ when a noun is involved, usually with ‘a/an’ before the adjective (What a fine bird it is!). Use ‘How’ when only an adjective or an adverb is involved (How fine the bird is! / How beautifully she sings!).
How do ‘I wish’ and ‘I hope’ change?
‘I wish’ (an unreal wish) becomes ‘If’, ‘Had’, ‘Would that’, or ‘O that’. ‘I hope’ (a real hope) becomes ‘If’ only.
How do the feeling phrases change?
‘It is a matter of joy that’ becomes ‘Hurrah!’, ‘sorrow/regret’ becomes ‘Alas!’, ‘praise’ becomes ‘Bravo!’, and ‘It is shameful that’ becomes ‘Fie! Fie!’.
Do I need to understand the sentence to transform it?
Not always. Because the rules change only fixed signal words and phrases, you can often transform a sentence correctly just by spotting the signal and applying its pattern.
