Adjective: Types, Order, and Usage Rules with Examples

Learn all types of adjectives, the correct order of adjectives, degrees of comparison, and the usage rules tested in SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams. With Bengali explanations.

Say “a dress.” Now say “a beautiful red silk dress.” Feel the difference? Those three extra words painted a full picture in your mind, and every one of them is an adjective. That is what adjectives do: they add colour, size, number, and detail to a noun, turning a flat sentence into a vivid one.

“A dress” বলো।

Adjectives look simple, but exams turn them into some of the trickiest questions, especially the order of adjectives and the rules of comparison. So in this lesson we will go all the way, from the basic types you need for J.S.C and S.S.C, up to the order, degrees, and usage rules that come in H.S.C, admission, and job exams. This lesson connects closely with the parts of speech.

What is an Adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes or adds meaning to a noun or a pronoun (একটি noun বা pronoun কে বর্ণনা করে)। It usually answers one of three questions: “what kind?”, “how many?”, or “which one?”.

Adjective হলো এমন একটি শব্দ যা কোনো noun বা pronoun কে বর্ণনা করে বা তার সম্পর্কে বাড়তি তথ্য দেয়। এটি সাধারণত তিনটি প্রশ্নের একটির উত্তর দেয়: “কেমন?”, “কতগুলো?”, অথবা “কোনটি?”।

  • She is a kind and honest doctor.
  • We planted twenty trees last week.
  • This road leads to the station.
  • He bought an expensive camera.

Types of Adjective at a Glance

There are several types of adjectives. Read this table first, then study each one below.

Adjective এর কয়েকটি প্রকার আছে। প্রথমে এই টেবিলটি দেখে নাও, তারপর নিচে প্রতিটি প্রকার বিস্তারিত পড়ো।

TypeWhat it shows (কী বোঝায়)Example
QualityThe kind or quality of a noun (গুণ বা ধরন)a brave soldier
QuantityHow much (পরিমাণ)some rice
NumberHow many (সংখ্যা)five pens
DemonstrativeWhich one (কোনটি)that house
PossessiveWhose it is (কার)my book
InterrogativeAsks about a noun (প্রশ্ন করে)Which way?
DistributiveEach one separately (প্রত্যেকটি আলাদাভাবে)each student
ProperMade from a proper noun (proper noun থেকে তৈরি)Bangladeshi food

1. Adjective of Quality

An adjective of quality tells us the kind or quality of a person or thing (কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর গুণ বা ধরন বোঝায়)। It answers the question “what kind?”.

Adjective of quality কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর গুণ, ধরন বা বৈশিষ্ট্য বোঝায় এবং “কেমন?” প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয়। এটিই সবচেয়ে পরিচিত ধরনের adjective।

  • The diligent student topped the class.
  • We stayed in a comfortable hotel.
  • He told a funny story.
  • It was a cold and foggy morning.

2. Adjective of Quantity

An adjective of quantity shows how much of a thing is meant (কী পরিমাণ বোঝায়)। It is used with uncountable nouns and answers “how much?”.

Adjective of quantity কোনো কিছুর পরিমাণ বোঝায় এবং “কতটা?” প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয়। এটি সাধারণত uncountable noun এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

  • I have enough money for the trip.
  • She drank some water after the run.
  • There is little hope of his recovery.
  • We wasted much time on the way.

3. Adjective of Number

An adjective of number shows how many persons or things are meant, or in what order (সংখ্যা বা ক্রম বোঝায়)। It is used with countable nouns and answers “how many?”.

Adjective of number কতজন ব্যক্তি বা কতগুলো বস্তু, অথবা কোন ক্রমে আছে তা বোঝায় এবং “কতগুলো?” প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয়। এটি countable noun এর সাথে বসে।

  • There are seven days in a week.
  • He was the first boy to arrive.
  • Many people attended the fair.
  • She has few friends in this city.

4. Demonstrative Adjective

A demonstrative adjective points out which particular noun is meant (কোন নির্দিষ্ট noun তা নির্দেশ করে)। The words are this, that, these, and those, and they always come before a noun.

Demonstrative adjective কোন নির্দিষ্ট noun বোঝানো হচ্ছে তা নির্দেশ করে। this, that, these, those শব্দগুলো এর অন্তর্গত এবং এরা সবসময় একটি noun এর আগে বসে। মনে রাখবে, এদের পরে noun থাকলে adjective, আর noun না থাকলে pronoun।

  • This mango is ripe.
  • That building is very old.
  • These shoes are mine.
  • Those birds fly south in winter.

5. Possessive Adjective

A possessive adjective shows who owns the noun (noun টি কার তা বোঝায়)। The words are my, our, your, his, her, its, and their, and they sit before a noun.

Possessive adjective দেখায় noun টি কার। my, our, your, his, her, its, their শব্দগুলো এর অন্তর্গত এবং এরা noun এর আগে বসে। এখানে সতর্ক থাকো: “This is my book” এ my একটি adjective, কিন্তু “This book is mine” এ mine একটি pronoun।

  • My brother lives in Khulna.
  • The dog wagged its tail.
  • Their house is near the river.
  • Please show me your ticket.

6. Interrogative Adjective

An interrogative adjective is used with a noun to ask a question (noun সহ প্রশ্ন করে)। The words are which, what, and whose, when they are followed by a noun.

Interrogative adjective একটি noun এর সাথে বসে প্রশ্ন করে। which, what, whose শব্দগুলো যখন একটি noun এর আগে বসে, তখন এরা interrogative adjective হয়।

  • Which book do you want?
  • What colour is your bag?
  • Whose pen is this?
  • What time is the meeting?

7. Distributive Adjective

A distributive adjective refers to each member of a group separately (দলের প্রত্যেককে আলাদাভাবে বোঝায়)। The words are each, every, either, and neither, and they are always followed by a singular noun.

Distributive adjective দলের প্রত্যেক সদস্যকে আলাদাভাবে বোঝায়। each, every, either, neither শব্দগুলো এর অন্তর্গত এবং এদের পরে সবসময় singular noun বসে। এটি পরীক্ষায় খুব আসে, কারণ এদের সাথে verb ও singular হয়।

  • Each student was given a book.
  • Every child needs love and care.
  • Either road leads to the market.
  • Neither answer was correct.

8. Proper Adjective

A proper adjective is formed from a proper noun (proper noun থেকে তৈরি)। Like the proper noun it comes from, it always begins with a capital letter.

Proper adjective একটি proper noun থেকে তৈরি হয়। যে proper noun থেকে আসে, তার মতোই এটিও সবসময় বড় হাতের অক্ষর দিয়ে শুরু হয়। যেমন Bangladesh থেকে Bangladeshi, China থেকে Chinese।

  • I love Bangladeshi sweets.
  • She teaches English literature.
  • We bought some Chinese lanterns.
  • He admires Roman architecture.

Degrees of Comparison

Most adjectives of quality have three degrees, which we use to compare things: the positive, the comparative, and the superlative (তিনটি degree: positive, comparative, superlative)।

গুণবাচক বেশিরভাগ adjective এর তিনটি degree থাকে, যা দিয়ে আমরা তুলনা করি: positive, comparative এবং superlative।

  • Positive (no comparison): Rahim is a tall boy.
  • Comparative (comparing two): Rahim is taller than Karim.
  • Superlative (comparing more than two): Rahim is the tallest boy in the class.

The rule of forming them: short adjectives add -er and -est (tall, taller, tallest), while long adjectives take more and most (more beautiful, most beautiful). Some are irregular (good, better, best).

গঠনের নিয়ম: ছোট adjective এ -er ও -est যোগ হয় (tall, taller, tallest), আর বড় adjective এ more ও most বসে (more beautiful, most beautiful)। কিছু আছে irregular (good, better, best)।

Changing an adjective from one degree to another is a whole topic on its own. Study it fully in our lesson on Changing the Degree.

The Order of Adjectives

Here is something exams love to test. When you put several adjectives before one noun, they must follow a fixed order. We do not say “a red big ball”; we say “a big red ball.” Native speakers follow this order without thinking, but you can learn it as a list.

এখানে এমন একটি বিষয় যা পরীক্ষায় খুব আসে। একটি noun এর আগে যখন কয়েকটি adjective বসে, তখন তাদের একটি নির্দিষ্ট ক্রম মেনে চলতে হয়। আমরা “a red big ball” বলি না, বলি “a big red ball।” এই ক্রমটি তুমি একটি তালিকা হিসেবে শিখে নিতে পারো।

The order: Opinion, then Size, then Age, then Shape, then Colour, then Origin, then Material, then Purpose, then the Noun (মতামত, আকার, বয়স, আকৃতি, রঙ, উৎস, উপাদান, উদ্দেশ্য, তারপর noun)।

OrderTypeExample word
1Opinion (মতামত)lovely, ugly
2Size (আকার)big, small
3Age (বয়স)old, new
4Shape (আকৃতি)round, square
5Colour (রঙ)red, black
6Origin (উৎস)Chinese, Italian
7Material (উপাদান)silk, wooden
8Purpose (উদ্দেশ্য)dining, sleeping
  • She bought a lovely little old Chinese silk scarf.
  • He sat on a big round wooden dining table.
  • They own a beautiful small white house.
  • I lost my new black leather wallet.

Position of Adjectives

An adjective can sit in two positions. In the attributive position, it comes before the noun (noun এর আগে)। In the predicative position, it comes after a linking verb (linking verb এর পরে)।

একটি adjective দুই জায়গায় বসতে পারে। Attributive position এ এটি noun এর আগে বসে, আর predicative position এ এটি একটি linking verb এর পরে বসে।

  • Attributive: She is a happy child.
  • Predicative: The child is happy.

Note a special rule: a few adjectives (afraid, alike, alive, alone, asleep, aware, ashamed) are used only after the verb, never before a noun (শুধু verb এর পরে বসে)। So we say “The baby is asleep,” not “an asleep baby” (we say “a sleeping baby”).

একটি বিশেষ নিয়ম মনে রাখো: afraid, alike, alive, alone, asleep, aware, ashamed এর মতো কয়েকটি adjective শুধু verb এর পরে বসে, কখনো noun এর আগে নয়। তাই আমরা বলি “The baby is asleep,” কিন্তু “an asleep baby” বলি না; বলি “a sleeping baby।”

Important Usage Rules for the Exam

These are the rules that admission and job exams test again and again. Learn them carefully.

এই নিয়মগুলোই admission ও job পরীক্ষায় বারবার আসে। মন দিয়ে শেখো।

Rule 1: Use the comparative degree to compare two things, and the superlative for more than two (দুইয়ের তুলনায় comparative, দুইয়ের বেশি হলে superlative)।

  • She is the taller of the two sisters.
  • She is the tallest of the five sisters.

Rule 2: Never use a double comparative or superlative (double comparative/superlative ভুল)।

  • Correct: He is more intelligent than his brother. (not “more intelligenter”)
  • Correct: It is the best solution. (not “most best”)

Rule 3: Some adjectives cannot be compared, because their meaning is already absolute: unique, perfect, complete, universal, ideal, round, square, eternal (এদের comparison হয় না)।

  • Correct: This design is unique. (not “more unique”)

Rule 4: These Latin comparatives take ‘to’, not ‘than’: superior, inferior, senior, junior, prior, preferable (‘than’ নয়, ‘to’ বসে)।

  • He is senior to me. (not “senior than me”)
  • Tea is preferable to coffee for me.

Rule 5: Learn the difference between ‘few’ and ‘a few’, and ‘little’ and ‘a little’ (অর্থের পার্থক্য মনে রাখো)।

  • few = almost none (a negative sense): He has few friends. (nearly none)
  • a few = some (a positive sense): He has a few friends. (some)
  • little = almost none: There is little water in the pot.
  • a little = some: There is a little water in the pot.

Rule 6: ‘The’ before an adjective can make it a plural noun meaning a whole class (the + adjective = শ্রেণিবাচক bahubachan noun)।

  • The rich should help the poor. (rich people, poor people)

Adjective or Adverb? A Quick Warning

Students often confuse an adjective with an adverb. An adjective describes a noun, but an adverb describes a verb. The classic trap is ‘good’ and ‘well’: ‘good’ is an adjective, and ‘well’ is an adverb.

শিক্ষার্থীরা প্রায়ই adjective আর adverb গুলিয়ে ফেলে। Adjective একটি noun কে বর্ণনা করে, কিন্তু adverb একটি verb কে বর্ণনা করে। সবচেয়ে পরিচিত ফাঁদ হলো ‘good’ আর ‘well’: ‘good’ একটি adjective, আর ‘well’ একটি adverb।

  • Correct: She is a good singer. (good describes the noun ‘singer’)
  • Correct: She sings well. (well describes the verb ‘sings’)

How to Identify an Adjective (Quick Trick)

Here is a fast test. If a word describes a noun and answers “what kind?”, “how many?”, or “which one?”, it is an adjective. You can also try placing it before a noun and seeing if it fits: a ______ boy. If the word fits (tall, clever, honest), it is an adjective.

দ্রুত পরীক্ষা: কোনো শব্দ যদি একটি noun কে বর্ণনা করে এবং “কেমন?”, “কতগুলো?”, বা “কোনটি?” প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয়, তাহলে সেটি adjective। এছাড়া শব্দটিকে একটি noun এর আগে বসিয়ে দেখো: a ______ boy। শব্দটি মানানসই হলে (tall, clever, honest), সেটি adjective।

Practice Exercise with Answers

Part A: Name the type of the bold adjective. Part B: Correct the error in each sentence.

নিজে চেষ্টা করার পরে নিচের উত্তরগুলো মিলিয়ে নাও।

Part A:

  1. He is a brave soldier.
  2. Each boy got a prize.
  3. I need some sugar.
  4. Whose bag is this?

Part B: 5. He is senior than me. 6. This is the most unique painting here. 7. She is the tallest of the two girls. 8. He is more wiser than his friend.

Answers

Part A:

  1. brave = Adjective of Quality
  2. Each = Distributive Adjective
  3. some = Adjective of Quantity
  4. Whose = Interrogative Adjective

Part B: 5. He is senior to me. (senior takes ‘to’, not ‘than’) 6. This is a unique painting here. (‘unique’ cannot be compared) 7. She is the taller of the two girls. (comparative for two) 8. He is wiser than his friend. (no double comparative)

A Tip for the Exam

The easy adjective questions ask you to name a type. The hard ones, which decide your marks, test usage: the order of adjectives, comparison of two versus many, ‘to’ after senior and superior, and the few-versus-a-few difference. When you see an adjective question, do not rush. Ask what the sentence is really testing, then apply the exact rule. That habit turns tricky questions into sure marks.

সহজ adjective এর প্রশ্নে প্রকার চেনাতে বলা হয়। কিন্তু কঠিন প্রশ্নগুলো, যেগুলো তোমার নম্বর ঠিক করে, সেগুলো ব্যবহারের নিয়ম পরীক্ষা করে: order of adjectives, দুই বনাম বহুর তুলনা, senior ও superior এর পরে ‘to’, আর few বনাম a few এর পার্থক্য। adjective এর প্রশ্ন দেখলে তাড়াহুড়ো করো না। আগে বুঝে নাও বাক্যটি আসলে কী পরীক্ষা করছে, তারপর সঠিক নিয়মটি প্রয়োগ করো। এই অভ্যাসই কঠিন প্রশ্নকে নিশ্চিত নম্বরে পরিণত করবে।
