Changing Degree: Positive, Comparative & Superlative Rules with Examples

Learn changing degree in English: positive, comparative, and superlative, with all the transformation rules, a word-forms chart, the than/to rule, and 30 exercises for SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams.

“Rina is a good singer.” “Rina is better than any other singer in her class.” “Rina is the best singer in her class.” Three sentences, one meaning, told three different ways. That is the whole idea of changing degree: comparing people or things using the positive, comparative, and superlative forms of an adjective or adverb, without ever changing the meaning. It is one of the most common transformation questions in SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams, and once you learn the patterns, it becomes surprisingly easy. This lesson gives you every rule, two clear charts, explanations, and thirty exercises with answers.

“Rina is a good singer.” “Rina is better than any other singer in her class.” “Rina is the best singer in her class.”

What is Changing Degree?

Comparing adjective words or adverb words is called degree change, or comparison of degree. It is an important part of the transformation of sentences, where we change a sentence from positive to comparative or superlative by changing the adjective or adverb, while keeping the meaning the same.

Adjective শব্দ বা Adverb শব্দের মাঝে তুলনা করাকে degree change বা comparison of degree বলা হয়। এটি transformation of sentences এর একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ, যেখানে আমরা adjective বা adverb শব্দ পরিবর্তন করে একটি বাক্যকে positive থেকে comparative বা superlative এ পরিবর্তন করি, অর্থ একই রেখে।

Since degree is a property of adjectives and adverbs, a quick look at our lessons on the adjective and the adverb will help.

যেহেতু degree হলো adjective ও adverb এর একটি বৈশিষ্ট্য, আমাদের adjective ও adverb পাঠে একবার চোখ বুলিয়ে নিলে সুবিধা হবে।

The Three Degrees

There are three degrees of an adjective or adverb. Learn what each one does.

একটি adjective বা adverb এর তিনটি degree আছে। প্রতিটি কী করে তা শেখো।

  • Positive Degree: no comparison at all. ( যখন কোনো তুলনা নেই, সেই বাক্যটি হল Positive Degree)
  • Comparative Degree: comparison between two persons or things. (দুইজনের বা দুটি জিনিসের মধ্যে যখন তুলনা করা বোঝায় তখন সেটা হয় Comparative Degree)
  • Superlative Degree: comparison among many persons or things. (অনেকের মধ্যে তুলনা বোঝালে তখন সেটা হয় Superlative Degree)

Examples:

  • This student is intelligent. (Positive, no comparison) – কোন তুলনা নেই, সাধারন বাক্য যে এই ছাত্রটি বুদ্ধিমান
  • This student is more intelligent than Max. (Comparative, between two) – দুইজনের মধ্যে তুলনা হচ্ছে যে কে বেশি বুদ্ধিমান
  • This student is the most intelligent in the class. (Superlative, among many) – ক্লাসে সবার সাথে তুলনা হচ্ছে

How to Form the Three Degrees

Before the transformation rules, learn how the words themselves change. This is the base of everything.

Transformation নিয়মের আগে শেখো শব্দগুলো নিজে কীভাবে বদলায়। এটাই সবকিছুর ভিত্তি।

  • For short words, add ‘-er’ for the comparative and ‘-est’ for the superlative: tall, taller, tallest. (ছোট শব্দে ‘-er’ ও ‘-est’ যোগ করো)
  • For long words, use ‘more’ and ‘most’: beautiful, more beautiful, most beautiful. (বড় শব্দে ‘more’ ও ‘most’ ব্যবহার করো)
  • If a word ends in ‘y’, change ‘y’ to ‘i’: happy, happier, happiest. (‘y’ থাকলে ‘i’ করো)
  • For a short word ending in a single vowel and consonant, double the consonant: big, bigger, biggest. (শেষ consonant দ্বিগুণ করো)
  • Some words are irregular and must be memorised: good, better, best; bad, worse, worst. (কিছু শব্দ অনিয়মিত যেগুলো কোন নিয়ম মানেনা। সেইজন্য এধরনের শব্দগুলো মুখস্থ করো। নিচে সেই শব্দগুলো চার্ট এ দেওয়া হয়েছে।)

Points to Remember Before You Start

Keep these key points in mind whenever you change a degree.

Degree পরিবর্তনের সময় এই মূল বিষয়গুলো মাথায় রাখো।

  • The sign of the positive degree is ‘as … as’ or ‘so … as’. (positive degree চিনতে পারার চিহ্ন ‘as … as’)
  • The sign of the comparative degree is ‘than’. (comparative এর চিহ্ন ‘than’)
  • The sign of the superlative degree is ‘the’. (superlative এর চিহ্ন ‘the’)
  • Change the adjective or adverb to match the degree: strong, stronger, strongest. (degree অনুযায়ী ওই বাক্যের adjective বা adverb শব্দ বদলাও)
  • Never change the meaning of the sentence, only its structure. (বাক্যের অর্থ কখনো বদলিও না, শুধু গঠন পরিবর্তন হবে)
  • To keep the meaning the same, swap the positions of the subject and the object. (বাক্যের অর্থ ঠিক রাখার জন্য সেই বাক্যের subject ও object এর স্থান বদলাও)

The Rules with Examples

Now study each rule with its explanation and examples. The changing parts are in bold.

এবার প্রতিটি নিয়ম তার ব্যাখ্যা ও উদাহরণসহ পড়ো। পরিবর্তিত অংশগুলো মোটা অক্ষরে দেওয়া আছে।

Rule 1: No other … (Singular)

This is the most common pattern, so learn it well. When the positive sentence begins with ‘No other’ and compares one thing against a group, do three things. Move the object to the front as the new subject, change the adjective to its comparative form, and add ‘than any other’. For the superlative, put ‘the’ before the superlative adjective. Keep the verb singular here.

এটি সবচেয়ে প্রচলিত pattern, তাই ভালোভাবে শিখে রাখো। Positive sentence যদি ‘No other’ দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং একটি ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে একটি দলের অন্য সবার সঙ্গে তুলনা করে, তাহলে তিনটি কাজ করতে হবে। প্রথমে object-কে sentence-এর শুরুতে এনে নতুন subject বানাও। এরপর adjective-কে comparative form-এ পরিবর্তন করো এবং ‘than any other’ যোগ করো। Superlative করার সময় superlative adjective-এর আগে ‘the’ বসাও। এখানে verb singular রাখবে।

Examples:

  • Positive: No other boy in the class is as good as John.
  • Comparative: John is better than any other boy in the class.
  • Superlative: John is the best boy in the class.

Rule 2: Very few … (Plural)

Use this pattern when the positive sentence begins with ‘Very few’, which means we compare against many, not all. Move the object to the front, change the adjective to its comparative, and add ‘than most other’ or ‘than all other’. For the superlative, use ‘one of the’ before the superlative word. Notice the verb is plural here.

Positive sentence যদি ‘Very few’ দিয়ে শুরু হয়, তখন এই নিয়মটি ব্যবহার করো। এর অর্থ হলো, এখানে একটি ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে সবার সঙ্গে নয়, বরং অনেকের সঙ্গে তুলনা করা হচ্ছে। প্রথমে object-কে sentence-এর শুরুতে এনে নতুন subject বানাও। এরপর adjective-কে comparative form-এ পরিবর্তন করো এবং ‘than most other’ যোগ করো। Superlative করার সময় superlative word-এর আগে ‘one of the’ ব্যবহার করো। খেয়াল রাখবে, Positive sentence-এ এখানে verb plural হয়।

Examples:

  • Positive: Very few cities are as developed as New York.
  • Comparative: New York is more developed than most other cities.
  • Superlative: New York is one of the most developed cities.

Rule 3: as … as with a Single Word (Affirmative and Negative)

When ‘as … as’ is followed by a single word, not a full clause, you can change it to the comparative. Swap the two things, change the adjective to comparative, and use this key trick: if the positive sentence is affirmative, make the comparative negative; if it is negative, make it affirmative. This flip is what keeps the meaning the same. There is no superlative form for this pattern.

Examples:

  • Positive: The boy is as strong as the girl.
  • Comparative: The girl is not stronger than the boy.
  • Positive: Your bag is as fine as mine.
  • Comparative: My bag is not finer than yours.

Rule 4: as … as before a Clause (Not less … than)

This pattern looks similar to Rule 3 but works differently, so read carefully. When ‘as … as’ is followed by a whole clause (like ‘as you said’), do not change the adjective, and do not swap the subject and object. Just add ‘less’ or ‘not less’ before ‘than’. If the positive is affirmative, use ‘not less … than’; if it is negative, use ‘less … than’.

এই প্যাটার্নটি Rule 3 এর মতো দেখালেও ভিন্নভাবে কাজ করে, তাই মন দিয়ে পড়ো। যখন ‘as … as’ এর পরে একটি পূর্ণ clause থাকে (যেমন ‘as you said’), adjective বদলিও না, আর subject ও object অদলবদল কোরো না। শুধু ‘than’ এর আগে ‘less’ বা ‘not less’ যোগ করো। যদি positive হাঁ-বোধক হয়, ‘not less … than’ ব্যবহার করো; না-বোধক হলে ‘less … than’ ব্যবহার করো।

এই pattern-টি Rule 3-এর মতো দেখতে হলেও এর নিয়ম আলাদা, তাই মনোযোগ দিয়ে পড়ো। ‘as … as’-এর পরে যদি একটি পূর্ণ clause থাকে, যেমন ‘as you said’, তাহলে adjective পরিবর্তন করবে না এবং subject ও object-এর অবস্থানও অদলবদল করবে না। শুধু ‘than’-এর আগে ‘less’ বা ‘not less’ ব্যবহার করবে। Positive sentence হাঁ-বোধক হলে ‘not less … than’ ব্যবহার করো, আর না-বোধক হলে ‘less … than’ ব্যবহার করো।

Examples:

  • Positive: The book is as interesting as you said.
  • Comparative: The book is not less interesting than you said.
  • Positive: The student is not as clever as I think.
  • Comparative: The student is less clever than I think.

Rule 5: As soon as becomes No sooner had … than

This last one is a little different, more of a sentence change than a degree change, but it appears with this topic. Simply turn ‘as soon as’ into ‘No sooner had’, change the verb to its past participle, and replace the comma with ‘than’. Nothing else moves.

শেষ নিয়মটি একটু ভিন্ন। এটি Degree Change-এর চেয়ে বরং Sentence Transformation-এর নিয়ম, তবে এই বিষয়ের সঙ্গেই প্রায়ই শেখানো হয়। এখানে শুধু ‘as soon as’-কে ‘No sooner had’-এ পরিবর্তন করো, verb-কে past participle form-এ নাও এবং comma-এর জায়গায় ‘than’ বসাও। বাক্যের অন্য কোনো অংশের অবস্থান পরিবর্তন করার দরকার নেই।

Examples:

  • Positive: As soon as the man came, I left the room.
  • Comparative: No sooner had the man come than I left the room.

Special Comparatives: ‘than’ vs ‘to’

Here is a rule that admission and job exams love to test. A few adjectives that come from Latin do not take ‘than’; they take ‘to’ instead. Learn these six well.

এটি এমন একটি নিয়ম, যা ভর্তি ও চাকরির পরীক্ষায় প্রায়ই আসে। Latin থেকে আসা কিছু adjective-এর সঙ্গে ‘than’ ব্যবহার করা হয় না; এর পরিবর্তে ‘to’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। এই ছয়টি adjective ভালোভাবে শিখে রাখো।

  • superior to, inferior to, senior to, junior to, prior to, preferable to.

Example:

  • Correct: He is senior to me. (not “senior than me”)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not use a double comparative or superlative: write ‘better’, not ‘more better’; ‘best’, not ‘most best’. (যে শব্দগুলো degree অনুসারে পুরোপুরি বদলে যায় সেগুলোর আগে ভুল করে আবার double comparative কোরো না)
  • After ‘than’ or ‘as … as’, use the subjective pronoun in formal writing: “He is taller than I”, not “than me”. (‘than’ এর পরে pronoun থাকলে যেমন “than me” থাকলে সেটা subjective pronoun “than I” হবে)
  • Use ‘than any other’ with a singular noun, and ‘than all other’ with a plural noun. (Singular noun-এর সঙ্গে ‘than any other’ এবং plural noun-এর সঙ্গে ‘than all other’ ব্যবহার করো)
  • In Rules 3 and 4, never forget to flip affirmative and negative, or the meaning changes. (Rule 3 এবং Rule 4-এ affirmative ও negative-এর পরিবর্তন কখনো ভুলে যেয়ো না। হাঁ-বোধক ও না-বোধক ঠিকভাবে পরিবর্তন না করলে sentence-এর অর্থ বদলে যাবে)

A Tip for the Exam

The key to degree change is to read the signal first. If the positive sentence has ‘No other’ with a singular noun, use Rule 1 (than any other, the … est). If it has ‘Very few’ with a plural noun, use Rule 2 (than most other, one of the). If ‘as … as’ is followed by a single word, use Rule 3 and flip affirmative to negative. If it is followed by a clause, use Rule 4 (not less than).

Change the adjective form, swap the subject and object where needed, and keep the meaning locked in place. Practise a few both ways every day, positive to superlative and back, and these marks will be yours.

Degree Change-এর মূল কৌশল হলো প্রথমে sentence-এর সংকেতটি চিনে নেওয়া। Positive sentence-এ singular noun-এর সঙ্গে ‘No other’ থাকলে Rule 1 ব্যবহার করো: ‘than any other’ এবং ‘the … est’। Plural noun-এর সঙ্গে ‘Very few’ থাকলে Rule 2 ব্যবহার করো: ‘than most other’ এবং ‘one of the’। ‘as … as’-এর পরে যদি শুধু একটি word থাকে, তাহলে Rule 3 ব্যবহার করো এবং affirmative-কে negative-এ পরিবর্তন করো। আর এর পরে যদি একটি clause থাকে, তাহলে Rule 4 ব্যবহার করো: ‘not less than’।

Frequently Asked Questions

What is changing degree in English grammar?

It is changing a sentence between the positive, comparative, and superlative degrees of an adjective or adverb without changing its meaning, such as “the best boy”, “better than any other boy”, and “no other boy is as good”.

What are the three degrees of comparison?

The positive degree (no comparison), the comparative degree (comparison between two), and the superlative degree (comparison among many).

How do I change a superlative to a comparative and positive?

For “He is the best boy in the class”, the comparative is “He is better than any other boy in the class”, and the positive is “No other boy in the class is as good as he”.

Why do we say ‘senior to’ and not ‘senior than’?

Because a few Latin-origin adjectives, superior, inferior, senior, junior, prior, and preferable, take ‘to’ instead of ‘than’.

What is the most common mistake in degree change?

Forgetting to flip affirmative and negative in the ‘as … as’ rules, and using a double comparative like ‘more better’ instead of ‘better’.
