Picture this moment in the exam. You are handed half a sentence, “He is so weak that …”, and told to finish it. At first it feels like free writing, where anything goes. But here is the secret that changes everything: it is not free at all. Each of these sentences hides a clue word, like ‘so … that’, ‘too … to’, ‘unless’, or ‘lest’, and that clue word demands one fixed structure and nothing else.
Your only real job is to spot the clue and follow its pattern. Learn the patterns, and completing sentences, which is a full Question 4 in HSC English 2nd paper, turns into some of the most predictable, sure marks on the whole paper. In this lesson, I will teach you every pattern you need.
পরীক্ষার হলে Question 4 সামনে আসতেই তুমি দেখলে একটি অসম্পূর্ণ বাক্য: “He is so weak that …”। এখন কী লিখবে? প্রথমে মনে হতে পারে, বাক্যটি সম্পূর্ণ করতে ইচ্ছেমতো কিছু লিখলেই হবে। কিন্তু Completing Sentences আসলে মোটেও এমন নয়।
প্রায় প্রতিটি বাক্যের মধ্যেই একটি নির্দিষ্ট clue word বা সংকেত লুকিয়ে থাকে, যেমন ‘so … that’, ‘too … to’, ‘unless’ বা ‘lest’।
What is “Completing Sentences”?
Completing sentences is a grammar exercise in which you are given an incomplete sentence and must add the missing words or clause to make it grammatically correct and meaningful. To complete a sentence correctly, you need to understand the clue or structure already present, such as conditionals, relative clauses, infinitives, comparisons, or expressions like “too…to,” “so…that,” “as if,” and “lest.”
Completing Sentences হলো এমন একটি grammar exercise, যেখানে একটি অসম্পূর্ণ বাক্য দেওয়া হয় এবং সেটিকে grammatically correct ও অর্থপূর্ণ করতে প্রয়োজনীয় শব্দ বা clause যোগ করতে হয়। একটি বাক্য সঠিকভাবে সম্পূর্ণ করতে হলে আগে বাক্যে থাকা clue বা grammatical structure বুঝতে হবে। যেমন conditional, relative clause, infinitive, comparison অথবা ‘too … to’, ‘so … that’, ‘as if’ ও ‘lest’-এর মতো নির্দিষ্ট structure।
Example:
- Incomplete: If you work hard, ______.
- Complete: If you work hard, you will succeed.
The added part must follow the correct grammatical pattern and make logical sense with the rest of the sentence.
তুমি যে অংশটি যোগ করবে, সেটি অবশ্যই সঠিক grammatical pattern অনুসরণ করবে এবং বাক্যের বাকি অংশের সঙ্গে অর্থগতভাবে সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ হতে হবে।
In HSC English 2nd paper, Question 4 gives you a set of incomplete sentences, each carrying a clue word or phrase, and asks you to complete each one with a suitable clause or phrase. It carries five marks. The point being tested is whether you know the fixed grammatical structure that each clue word requires. Get the structure right, and the mark is yours, even if your idea is simple.
HSC English 2nd Paper-এর Question 4: (Complete the sentences using suitable clauses/phrases)
The Golden Principle: The Clue Word Decides the Structure
Here is the one idea the whole lesson rests on. Do not think about what you want to write; think about what the clue word forces you to write. Every clue word, ‘so … that’, ‘lest’, ‘as if’, has its own rigid pattern, and your completion must obey it. So your first move is always the same: find the clue word, then recall its structure. To brush up on the building blocks, see our lessons on clauses and phrases.
তুমি কী লিখতে চাও, সেটা আগে ভাববে না; বরং clue word বা সংকেতসূচক শব্দ তোমাকে কী লিখতে বাধ্য করছে, সেটাই ভাববে। ‘so … that’, ‘lest’, ‘as if’—প্রতিটি clue word-এর নিজস্ব নির্দিষ্ট grammatical structure আছে, এবং বাক্য সম্পূর্ণ করার সময় সেই structure-ই অনুসরণ করতে হবে।
তাই তোমার প্রথম কাজ সব সময় একই: আগে clue word খুঁজে বের করো, তারপর তার নির্দিষ্ট structure মনে করো। এই বিষয়ের মূল ভিত্তি আরও ভালোভাবে ঝালিয়ে নিতে আমাদের Clauses এবং Phrases বিষয়ক পাঠগুলো পড়তে পারো।
Completing Sentences Rules
Here are all the rules of completing sentences you need, each with its fixed structure and worked examples. In every example, the blank shows what you must supply.
এখানে Completing Sentences-এর জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় সব নিয়মগুলো দেওয়া হলো। প্রতিটির সঙ্গে তার নির্দিষ্ট structure এবং সমাধান করা উদাহরণ রয়েছে। প্রতিটি উদাহরণে blank অংশটি দেখায়, বাক্য সম্পূর্ণ করতে তোমাকে কোন অংশটি যোগ করতে হবে।
Rule 1: so … that
When you see ‘so’ followed by an adjective, the sentence nearly always needs ‘that’ plus a negative result. The pattern is fixed. Just match the tense of ‘cannot’ or ‘could not’ to the first part of the sentence.
‘so’-এর পরে adjective থাকলে বাক্যটি প্রায় সব সময় ‘that’ এবং একটি negative result দিয়ে সম্পূর্ণ করতে হয়। এখানে pattern নির্দিষ্ট। শুধু বাক্যের প্রথম অংশের tense অনুযায়ী ‘cannot’ বা ‘could not’ ব্যবহার করবে।
Structure: Subject + verb + so + adjective + that + subject + cannot/could not + verb (এত … যে … পারে না)
Examples:
- Incomplete: He is so weak that ______.
- Complete: He is so weak that he cannot walk.
- Incomplete: The box was so heavy that ______.
- Complete: The box was so heavy that we could not lift it.
Rule 2: so that / in order that (Purpose)
‘So that’ shows purpose, the reason someone does something. After it, use a subject and a modal: ‘can’ or ‘may’ for the present, ‘could’ or ‘might’ for the past.
‘So that’ কোনো কাজের উদ্দেশ্য বোঝায়, অর্থাৎ কেউ কেন কাজটি করছে তা প্রকাশ করে। এর পরে একটি subject এবং একটি modal verb ব্যবহার করতে হয়। Present tense হলে ‘can’ বা ‘may’ এবং past tense হলে ‘could’ বা ‘might’ ব্যবহার করবে।
Structure: Subject + verb + so that + subject + can/could/may/might + verb (যাতে)
Examples:
- Incomplete: He studies hard so that ______.
- Complete: He studies hard so that he can pass the exam.
- Incomplete: She saved money so that ______.
- Complete: She saved money so that she could buy a laptop.
Rule 3: too … to
‘Too’ before an adjective signals the pattern ‘too … to’. It means there is so much of something that the action becomes impossible. Remember, ‘too’ always carries a hidden negative.
Adjective-এর আগে ‘too’ থাকলে সাধারণত ‘too … to’ pattern ব্যবহার করতে হয়। এর অর্থ হলো কোনো গুণ বা অবস্থা এত বেশি যে পরের কাজটি করা সম্ভব হয় না। মনে রাখবে, ‘too’-এর মধ্যে সব সময় একটি লুকানো negative অর্থ থাকে।
Structure: Subject + verb + too + adjective + to + verb (এত … যে করা যায় না)
Examples:
- Incomplete: He is too weak to ______.
- Complete: He is too weak to walk.
- Incomplete: The tea is too hot to ______.
- Complete: The tea is too hot to drink.
Rule 4: though / although (Contrast)
‘Though’ and ‘although’ show a contrast, something that goes against what you expect. Whatever the first clause says, the second turns against it. After it, use a full clause.
‘Though’ এবং ‘although’ দুটি বিপরীত বা প্রত্যাশার বিপরীত অর্থ প্রকাশ করে। প্রথম clause-এ যা বলা হয়, দ্বিতীয় clause-এ তার বিপরীত বা অপ্রত্যাশিত ফল প্রকাশ পায়। এগুলোর পরে একটি পূর্ণ clause ব্যবহার করতে হয়।
Structure: Though/Although + subject + verb, subject + verb (যদিও)
Examples:
- Incomplete: Though he is poor, ______.
- Complete: Though he is poor, he is honest.
- Incomplete: ______ although he worked hard.
- Complete: He failed although he worked hard.
Rule 5: in spite of / despite (Contrast)
‘In spite of’ and ‘despite’ also show contrast, but they are followed by a noun or a gerund (an -ing word), never by a full clause. That is the one thing students forget.
‘In spite of’ এবং ‘despite’ও বিপরীত অর্থ প্রকাশ করে। তবে এগুলোর পরে full clause বসে না; এর পরে noun বা gerund (-ing form) ব্যবহার করতে হয়। এই একটি নিয়মই অনেক শিক্ষার্থী প্রায়ই ভুলে যায়।
Structure: In spite of/Despite + noun/verb-ing, subject + verb (সত্ত্বেও)
Examples:
- Incomplete: In spite of his illness, ______.
- Complete: In spite of his illness, he came to school.
- Incomplete: ______ in spite of working hard.
- Complete: He failed in spite of working hard.
Rule 6: because / since / as (Reason)
These give a reason, the ‘why’ behind something. After them, put a full clause with its own subject and verb.
এগুলো কোনো কাজ বা ঘটনার কারণ বোঝায়, অর্থাৎ কেন কিছু ঘটছে বা করা হচ্ছে তা প্রকাশ করে। এগুলোর পরে নিজস্ব subject ও verb-সহ একটি full clause ব্যবহার করতে হয়।
Structure: Subject + verb + because/since/as + subject + verb (কারণ / যেহেতু)
Examples:
- Incomplete: He could not come because ______.
- Complete: He could not come because he was ill.
Rule 7: as soon as
‘As soon as’ joins two actions that happen one right after the other. Keep both parts in the same tense, usually the past.
‘As soon as’ এমন দুটি কাজকে যুক্ত করে, যেগুলোর একটি শেষ হওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই অন্যটি ঘটে। বাক্যের দুটি অংশে সাধারণত একই tense ব্যবহার করতে হয়, বেশিরভাগ ক্ষেত্রে past tense।
Structure: As soon as + subject + verb, subject + verb (যেই … অমনি)
Examples:
- Incomplete: As soon as the bell rang, ______.
- Complete: As soon as the bell rang, the students left the class.
- Incomplete: ______ as soon as he saw the police.
- Complete: The thief ran away as soon as he saw the police.
Rule 8: no sooner had … than / scarcely (hardly) had … when
These are the formal cousins of ‘as soon as’, and they follow a strict pattern. ‘No sooner had’ always takes ‘than’; ‘scarcely had’ and ‘hardly had’ always take ‘when’. Use a past participle after the subject, and a past simple in the second part.
এগুলো ‘as soon as’-এর আরও formal রূপ এবং এগুলোর pattern খুবই নির্দিষ্ট। ‘No sooner had’-এর সঙ্গে সব সময় ‘than’ বসে, আর ‘scarcely had’ ও ‘hardly had’-এর সঙ্গে সব সময় ‘when’ ব্যবহার করতে হয়। প্রথম অংশে subject-এর পরে past participle ব্যবহার করবে, আর দ্বিতীয় অংশে past simple ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
Structure: No sooner had + subject + past participle + than + subject + past simple (… মাত্রই)
Examples:
- Incomplete: No sooner had the train arrived than ______.
- Complete: No sooner had the train arrived than the passengers rushed in.
- Incomplete: Hardly had I reached home when ______.
- Complete: Hardly had I reached home when it started to rain.
Rule 9: unless
‘Unless’ already means ‘if not’, so it carries its own negative. Never add another ‘not’ after it. After ‘unless’, use a positive clause.
‘Unless’-এর অর্থই হলো ‘if not’, তাই এর মধ্যে নিজেই negative অর্থ থাকে। এ কারণে ‘unless’-এর পরে আর আলাদা করে ‘not’ ব্যবহার করবে না। ‘Unless’-এর পরে সব সময় positive clause ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
Structure: Unless + subject + verb, subject + verb (যদি না)
Examples:
- Incomplete: Unless you work hard, ______.
- Complete: Unless you work hard, you will fail.
Rule 10: lest … should
‘Lest’ means ‘for fear that’ or ‘so that … not’. It is always followed by ‘should’. And because the negative is already inside ‘lest’, you must never add ‘not’ after it.
‘Lest’-এর অর্থ হলো ‘for fear that’ বা ‘so that … not’। এর পরে সব সময় ‘should’ ব্যবহার করতে হয়। আর ‘lest’-এর মধ্যেই negative অর্থ রয়েছে, তাই এর পরে কখনোই আলাদা করে ‘not’ ব্যবহার করবে না।
Structure: Subject + verb + lest + subject + should + verb (পাছে … না)
Examples:
- Incomplete: Walk fast lest ______.
- Complete: Walk fast lest you should miss the bus.
- Incomplete: Study hard lest ______.
- Complete: Study hard lest you should fail.
Rule 11: it is (high) time
‘It is time’ and ‘it is high time’ point to something that really should be happening already. Here is the surprise: they are followed by a past simple verb, not a present one.
‘It is time’ এবং ‘it is high time’ এমন কোনো কাজ বোঝায়, যা ইতিমধ্যেই করা উচিত ছিল বা এখনই করা দরকার। এখানে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় মনে রাখবে: এগুলোর পরে present tense নয়, past simple verb ব্যবহার করতে হয়।
Structure: It is (high) time + subject + past simple verb (এখনই সময়)
Examples:
- Incomplete: It is high time we ______.
- Complete: It is high time we changed our bad habits.
- Incomplete: It is time you ______.
- Complete: It is time you took your studies seriously.
Rule 12: as if / as though
‘As if’ and ‘as though’ compare with something unreal or imagined. When the main verb is in the present, use a past verb after ‘as if’, and use ‘were’ in place of ‘was’.
‘As if’ এবং ‘as though’ এমন কোনো অবাস্তব বা কল্পিত বিষয়ের সঙ্গে তুলনা বোঝায়। Main verb present tense-এ থাকলে ‘as if’ বা ‘as though’-এর পরে past tense-এর verb ব্যবহার করতে হয়। আর এ ধরনের অবাস্তব তুলনায় ‘was’-এর পরিবর্তে ‘were’ ব্যবহার করা হয়।
Structure: Subject + verb + as if/as though + subject + past simple (যেন)
Examples:
- Incomplete: He talks as if ______.
- Complete: He talks as if he knew everything.
- Incomplete: She behaves as if ______.
- Complete: She behaves as if she were a queen.
Rule 13: wish / would that
‘I wish’ expresses a desire for something that is not real or not possible now. Like ‘as if’, it takes a past verb, and ‘were’ for the verb ‘to be’.
‘I wish’ এমন কোনো ইচ্ছা বোঝায়, যা বর্তমান বাস্তবতার সঙ্গে মেলে না বা এখন সম্ভব নয়। ‘As if’-এর মতো ‘I wish’-এর পরেও past tense-এর verb ব্যবহার করতে হয়। আর verb ‘to be’ হলে ‘was’-এর পরিবর্তে ‘were’ ব্যবহার করা হয়।
Structure: Subject + wish + subject + past simple (ইচ্ছা করি যদি)
Examples:
- Incomplete: I wish I ______.
- Complete: I wish I were a bird.
- Incomplete: I wish I ______ the truth.
- Complete: I wish I knew the truth.
Rule 14: Relative Pronouns (who / which / that / where / whose)
When the clue is a noun waiting to be described, complete it with a relative clause. Use ‘who’ for a person, ‘which’ or ‘that’ for a thing, ‘where’ for a place, and ‘whose’ for possession. Our lesson on noun, adjective, and adverb clauses explains these.
Clue যদি এমন একটি noun হয়, যেটিকে আরও বর্ণনা করা দরকার, তাহলে relative clause ব্যবহার করে বাক্যটি সম্পূর্ণ করো।Person বোঝালে ‘who’, কোনো বস্তু বোঝালে ‘which’ বা ‘that’, স্থান বোঝালে ‘where’ এবং মালিকানা বোঝালে ‘whose’ ব্যবহার করতে হবে। এই নিয়মগুলো আরও ভালোভাবে বুঝতে আমাদের Noun, Adjective, and Adverb Clauses বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Structure: … noun + who/which/that/where + subject + verb …
Examples:
- Incomplete: The man who ______ is my uncle.
- Complete: The man who helped me is my uncle.
- Incomplete: This is the house where ______.
- Complete: This is the house where I was born.
Rule 15: Conditionals (if)
An ‘if’ clue calls for a conditional, and there are three types. First: if + present, … will (real and likely). Second: if + past, … would (unreal now). Third: if + past perfect, … would have (unreal in the past). Match the two halves with care. See our conditional sentences lesson.
‘If’ clue থাকলে conditional sentence ব্যবহার করতে হয়, আর এর প্রধান তিনটি ধরন আছে।
- প্রথমটি: if + present, … will — এটি বাস্তব ও সম্ভাব্য শর্ত বোঝায়।
- দ্বিতীয়টি: if + past, … would — এটি বর্তমানের অবাস্তব বা অসম্ভব শর্ত বোঝায়।
- তৃতীয়টি: if + past perfect, … would have — এটি অতীতের অবাস্তব বা না-ঘটা পরিস্থিতি বোঝায়।
তাই বাক্যের দুই অংশের tense ও structure খুব সতর্কভাবে মিলিয়ে নিতে হবে। এ বিষয়ে আরও বিস্তারিত জানতে আমাদের Conditional Sentences বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Structure: If + subject + present, subject + will + verb (and the second and third types)
Examples:
- Incomplete: If you work hard, ______.
- Complete: If you work hard, you will succeed.
- Incomplete: If I were a bird, ______.
- Complete: If I were a bird, I would fly in the sky.
- Incomplete: If he had studied, ______.
- Complete: If he had studied, he would have passed.

| if (conditional) | if + present/past/past perfect, subject + will/would/would have | যদি |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not add ‘not’ after ‘unless’ or ‘lest’, because both words already contain a negative. Write “Unless you hurry, you will miss it”, not “Unless you do not hurry”; and “lest he should fail”, not “lest he should not fail”.
- Do not put a full clause after ‘in spite of’ or ‘despite’. These take a noun or an -ing word only. Write “In spite of his poverty”, not “In spite of he is poor”.
- Do not use a present verb after ‘it is high time’, ‘as if’, or ‘wish’. All three take a past-tense verb, and ‘were’ in place of ‘was’. Write “It is high time we changed”, not “we change”; and “I wish I were rich”, not “I wish I am rich”.
- Do not mix up ‘than’ and ‘when’. ‘No sooner had’ is always followed by ‘than’, while ‘scarcely had’ and ‘hardly had’ are always followed by ‘when’. Swapping them is a very common slip.
যেসব সাধারণ ভুল এড়িয়ে চলবে
- ‘Unless’ বা ‘lest’-এর পরে ‘not’ ব্যবহার করবে না, কারণ এই দুটি শব্দের মধ্যেই negative অর্থ রয়েছে। সঠিক হবে “Unless you hurry, you will miss it”, “Unless you do not hurry” নয়; এবং “lest he should fail”, “lest he should not fail” নয়।
- ‘In spite of’ বা ‘despite’-এর পরে full clause ব্যবহার করবে না। এগুলোর পরে শুধু noun বা -ing form ব্যবহার করা হয়। সঠিক হবে “In spite of his poverty”, “In spite of he is poor” নয়।
- ‘It is high time’, ‘as if’ বা ‘wish’-এর পরে present tense-এর verb ব্যবহার করবে না। এই তিনটির পরেই past tense-এর verb ব্যবহার করতে হয় এবং ‘was’-এর পরিবর্তে ‘were’ বসে। সঠিক হবে “It is high time we changed”, “we change” নয়; এবং “I wish I were rich”, “I wish I am rich” নয়।
- ‘than’ এবং ‘when’ গুলিয়ে ফেলবে না। ‘No sooner had’-এর পরে সব সময় ‘than’ বসে, আর ‘scarcely had’ ও ‘hardly had’-এর পরে সব সময় ‘when’ ব্যবহার করা হয়। এগুলো অদলবদল করা খুবই সাধারণ একটি ভুল।

A Tip for the Exam
The way to win at completing sentences is to become a clue-spotter. Before you write a single word, find the signal, is it ‘so … that’, ‘too … to’, ‘lest’, ‘as if’, or an ‘if’? The moment you name it, its structure comes to mind, and your only task is to add a simple, correct ending that fits. Do not reach for fancy ideas; a plain, grammatically correct completion earns the full mark. Learn the fifteen patterns, practise a set every day, and this question will become one of the safest scorers on your paper.
Completing Sentences-এ ভালো করার সবচেয়ে কার্যকর উপায় হলো clue word দ্রুত চিনে ফেলা। একটি শব্দও লেখার আগে আগে সংকেতটি খুঁজে বের করো—এটি কি ‘so … that’, ‘too … to’, ‘lest’, ‘as if’, নাকি কোনো ‘if’ structure?

Frequently Asked Questions
What is completing sentences in HSC English?
It is Question 4 of HSC English 2nd paper, where you are given incomplete sentences, each with a clue word, and must complete each one with a suitable clause or phrase that follows the structure the clue word requires. It carries five marks.
How do I complete a sentence with ‘so … that’?
Follow the structure: so + adjective + that + subject + cannot or could not + verb. For example, “He is so weak that he cannot walk.” Match the tense of ‘cannot’ or ‘could not’ to the first part.
What comes after ‘lest’?
‘Lest’ is always followed by a subject and ‘should’ plus a verb, as in “Walk fast lest you should miss the bus.” Never add ‘not’ after ‘lest’, because it already carries a negative meaning.
What tense comes after ‘it is high time’, ‘as if’, and ‘wish’?
All three are followed by a past-tense verb, and you use ‘were’ instead of ‘was’. For example, “It is high time we changed”, “He talks as if he knew everything”, and “I wish I were rich”.
Is ‘no sooner had’ followed by ‘than’ or ‘when’?
‘No sooner had’ is always followed by ‘than’, while ‘scarcely had’ and ‘hardly had’ are followed by ‘when’. For example, “No sooner had the train arrived than the passengers rushed in.”
