Clauses in English Grammar: Types, Rules & Examples

Learn clauses in English grammar: independent and dependent clauses, and the three dependent types, noun, adjective, and adverb clauses, with connectors, examples, and a 20-sentence exercise for SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams.

Every sentence you have ever written was powered by clauses. A clause is simply a group of words that has its own subject and its own verb, and it is the real engine of a sentence. Once you can spot clauses and see how they fit together, even a long, complicated sentence suddenly becomes easy to understand and easy to build yourself. That is why clauses are tested directly in SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams, in identifying clause types, choosing the right connector, and transforming sentences. This lesson: ‘Clauses in English Grammar’ makes the whole topic clear, step by step.

What is a Clause?

A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. That is the whole definition, and it is the one thing you must never forget: no subject and verb, no clause.

একটি clause হলো কিছু শব্দের একটি দল যাতে একটি subject ও একটি verb থাকে। এটাই পুরো সংজ্ঞা, আর এই একটি কথা তোমাকে কখনো ভুললে চলবে না: subject ও verb না থাকলে clause নেই।

Examples:

  • The bird sings. (subject: the bird, verb: sings)
  • when the sun rose (subject: the sun, verb: rose)

Notice that both groups have a subject and a verb, so both are clauses. But as you will see, one can stand on its own and one cannot.

লক্ষ্য করো, দুটি দলেই একটি subject ও একটি verb আছে, তাই দুটোই clause। কিন্তু তুমি দেখবে, একটি নিজে দাঁড়াতে পারে আর একটি পারে না।

Clause vs Phrase: The Key Difference

Students often confuse a clause with a phrase in English grammar, so fix this difference in your mind now. A clause has both a subject and a verb. A phrase is a group of words with no subject-verb pair. Learn more in our lesson on the analysis of sentences.

শিক্ষার্থীরা প্রায়ই clause ও phrase গুলিয়ে ফেলে, তাই এই পার্থক্যটি এখনই মনে গেঁথে নাও। একটি clause এ subject ও verb দুটোই থাকে। একটি phrase হলো কিছু শব্দের একটি দল যাতে subject-verb জোড়া নেই।

The Two Main Types of Clauses

Every clause in English is one of two kinds: an independent clause or a dependent clause. Let us look at each.

ইংরেজিতে প্রতিটি clause দুই ধরনের একটি: একটি independent clause বা একটি dependent clause। চলো প্রতিটি দেখি।

Independent (Main) Clause

An independent clause has a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought, so it can stand alone as a full sentence. It is also called the main clause.

একটি independent clause এ একটি subject ও একটি verb থাকে, আর এটি একটি সম্পূর্ণ ভাব প্রকাশ করে, তাই এটি একটি পূর্ণ বাক্য হিসেবে একা দাঁড়াতে পারে। একে main clause ও বলা হয়।

Examples:

  • Rahim plays football.
  • The sun rises in the east.
  • She is a good singer.

Each of these stands on its own and makes complete sense. Nothing feels missing.

এদের প্রতিটি নিজে দাঁড়ায় এবং সম্পূর্ণ অর্থ দেয়। কিছুই অসম্পূর্ণ মনে হয় না।

Dependent (Subordinate) Clause

A dependent clause also has a subject and a verb, but it does not express a complete thought, so it cannot stand alone. It leans on an independent clause to complete its meaning. It is also called a subordinate clause.

একটি dependent clause এও একটি subject ও একটি verb থাকে, কিন্তু এটি সম্পূর্ণ ভাব প্রকাশ করে না, তাই একা দাঁড়াতে পারে না। এটি তার অর্থ পূর্ণ করতে একটি independent clause এর উপর নির্ভর করে। একে subordinate clause ও বলা হয়।

Examples:

  • because he was tired (This leaves you asking: what happened because he was tired?)
  • when the bell rang
  • that she is honest

On their own, these feel unfinished. But join one to an independent clause, and the thought becomes complete: “He went to bed because he was tired.”

একা একা এদের অসম্পূর্ণ লাগে। কিন্তু একটিকে একটি independent clause এর সাথে জোড়ো, ভাবটি পূর্ণ হয়ে যায়: “He went to bed because he was tired.”

The Three Types of Dependent Clauses

Here is the heart of the lesson. A dependent clause does the work of one of three parts of speech, a noun, an adjective, or an adverb, and that gives us its three types. Understanding these three is the key to the whole topic. A quick revision of the parts of speech will help.

এই হলো পাঠের মূল অংশ। একটি dependent clause তিনটি parts of speech এর একটির কাজ করে, একটি noun, একটি adjective, বা একটি adverb, আর তা থেকেই আমরা এর তিনটি ধরন পাই। এই তিনটি বোঝাই পুরো বিষয়ের চাবিকাঠি।

1. Noun Clause

A noun clause does the work of a noun. This means it can be the subject or the object of a sentence, just as a single noun would be. It usually begins with that, what, whether, if, why, how, who, or where.

একটি noun clause একটি noun এর কাজ করে। এর মানে এটি একটি বাক্যের subject বা object হতে পারে, ঠিক যেমন একটি একক noun হতো। এটি সাধারণত that, what, whether, if, why, how, who বা where দিয়ে শুরু হয়।

Examples:

  • What he said is true. (the noun clause is the subject)
  • I know that she is honest. (the noun clause is the object)
  • Tell me where you live. (the noun clause is the object)

Quick test: if you can replace the whole clause with the word ‘something’ or ‘it’, it is a noun clause. “I know something.” works, so “that she is honest” is a noun clause.

দ্রুত পরীক্ষা: পুরো clause টিকে যদি ‘something’ বা ‘it’ দিয়ে বদলাতে পারো, এটি একটি noun clause। “I know something.” চলে, তাই “that she is honest” একটি noun clause।

2. Adjective Clause (Relative Clause)

An adjective clause does the work of an adjective: it describes a noun or pronoun. It comes right after the noun it describes, and it usually begins with a relative pronoun, who, whom, whose, which, or that, or with where or when. That is why it is also called a relative clause.

একটি adjective clause একটি adjective এর কাজ করে: এটি একটি noun বা pronoun কে বর্ণনা করে। এটি যে noun কে বর্ণনা করে তার ঠিক পরে বসে, আর সাধারণত একটি relative pronoun, who, whom, whose, which বা that, অথবা where বা when দিয়ে শুরু হয়। এই কারণেই একে relative clause ও বলা হয়।

Examples:

  • The man who helped me is a doctor. (describes ‘the man’)
  • The book that you gave me is interesting. (describes ‘the book’)
  • This is the house where I was born. (describes ‘the house’)

Quick test: an adjective clause answers “which one?” or “what kind?” about a noun. Which man? The one who helped me.

দ্রুত পরীক্ষা: একটি adjective clause একটি noun সম্পর্কে “কোনটি?” বা “কেমন?” এর উত্তর দেয়। কোন man? যে who helped me

3. Adverb Clause

An adverb clause does the work of an adverb: it modifies the verb of the main clause by telling when, where, why, how, or under what condition. It begins with a subordinating conjunction such as because, as, since, when, while, before, after, until, if, unless, although, though, or so that. See our lesson on the conjunction.

একটি adverb clause একটি adverb এর কাজ করে: এটি main clause এর verb কে modify করে, কখন, কোথায়, কেন, কীভাবে, বা কোন শর্তে তা বলে। এটি একটি subordinating conjunction দিয়ে শুরু হয়, যেমন because, as, since, when, while, before, after, until, if, unless, although, though, বা so that।

Examples:

  • I stayed at home because it was raining. (reason)
  • He came when I called him. (time)
  • Although he is poor, he is honest. (concession)
  • Work hard so that you can succeed. (purpose)
  • If it rains, we will not go out. (condition)

Quick test: an adverb clause answers “when?”, “why?”, “how?”, or “on what condition?” about the action. Why did you stay home? Because it was raining.

দ্রুত পরীক্ষা: একটি adverb clause কাজটি সম্পর্কে “কখন?”, “কেন?”, “কীভাবে?”, বা “কোন শর্তে?” এর উত্তর দেয়। কেন বাড়িতে ছিলে? Because it was raining

How Clauses Build Sentences

Clauses are the bricks that build every kind of sentence. Once you know clauses, the kinds of sentences make perfect sense.

Clause হলো সেই ইট যা দিয়ে প্রতিটি ধরনের বাক্য গড়া হয়। তুমি একবার clause জানলে, kinds of sentences পুরোপুরি পরিষ্কার হয়ে যায়।

  • Simple sentence: one independent clause. The sun set. (একটি independent clause)
  • Compound sentence: two independent clauses joined by and, but, or, so. He studied hard, so he passed. (দুটি independent clause)
  • Complex sentence: one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. Although he was tired, he kept working. (একটি independent + একটি dependent)
  • Compound-complex sentence: two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. I called him when I arrived, but he did not answer. (দুটি independent + একটি dependent)

This is also the foundation of transformation of sentences, where you change one kind into another by adding or removing clauses.

এটি transformation of sentences এরও ভিত্তি, যেখানে তুমি clause যোগ বা বাদ দিয়ে এক ধরন থেকে অন্য ধরনে পরিবর্তন করো।

Connectors for Each Clause Type

The connector at the start of a dependent clause usually tells you its type. Learn this chart, and identifying clauses becomes easy. For more joining words, see our lesson on linking words and phrases.

একটি dependent clause এর শুরুর connector সাধারণত তোমাকে এর ধরন বলে দেয়। এই chart শেখো, তাহলে clause চেনা সহজ হয়ে যাবে।

Adverb clausebecause, as, since, when, while, if, unless, although, so that, before, after, untilmodifies a verb (verb কে modify করে)

A Note on Non-Finite Clauses

At a higher level, you may meet non-finite clauses. These use a verb that does not show tense, an infinitive (to go), a present participle (going), or a past participle (gone), and they act like short dependent clauses.

উঁচু স্তরে তুমি non-finite clause এর দেখা পেতে পারো। এরা এমন একটি verb ব্যবহার করে যা tense দেখায় না, একটি infinitive (to go), একটি present participle (going), বা একটি past participle (gone), আর এরা ছোট dependent clause এর মতো কাজ করে।

Examples:

  • To win the prize, she practised daily.
  • Feeling tired, he went to bed early.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not treat a phrase as a clause. A clause must have a subject and a verb. (phrase কে clause ভেবো না।)
  • Do not leave a dependent clause alone as a sentence. “Because he was late.” is not a complete sentence. (dependent clause একা বাক্য নয়।)
  • Do not confuse a relative clause with a noun clause. A relative clause describes a noun before it; a noun clause replaces a noun. (relative ও noun clause গুলিয়ো না।)
  • Put a comma after an adverb clause when it starts the sentence: “If it rains, we will stay.” (শুরুতে adverb clause এর পরে কমা বসাও।)

A Tip for the Exam

To identify any clause, ask two questions. First, does it have a subject and a verb? If not, it is only a phrase. Second, does it stand on its own? If yes, it is independent; if no, it is dependent. Then, for a dependent clause, check its job: if it acts as a noun, it is a noun clause; if it describes a noun before it, an adjective clause; if it tells when, why, or how about the verb, an adverb clause. The connector is your biggest clue, so learn the connector chart well, and clauses will never confuse you again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a clause in English grammar?

A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. It is the basic unit that builds a sentence, and it can be independent or dependent.

What is the difference between a clause and a phrase?

A clause has both a subject and a verb (when he came). A phrase is a group of words with no subject-verb pair (in the morning).

What are the two main types of clauses?

Independent clauses, which express a complete thought and can stand alone, and dependent clauses, which cannot stand alone and lean on an independent clause.

What are the three types of dependent clauses?

Noun clauses (which act as a noun), adjective or relative clauses (which describe a noun), and adverb clauses (which modify a verb by telling when, why, how, or under what condition).

How do I know which type of dependent clause it is?

Check its job in the sentence. If it works as a noun, it is a noun clause; if it describes a noun before it, an adjective clause; if it answers when, why, or how about the verb, an adverb clause. The connector usually gives it away.
