Job Application Cover Letter: Format, Sample & Rules

Learn how to write a job application cover letter: the format, all its parts, a ready sample, rules, and a worked example, aligned with SSC and HSC board CV-and-cover-letter questions.

When you apply for a job, the officer opens your envelope and reads one thing first, before your CV, before your certificates: your cover letter. In those few lines, they form a first impression of you, your professionalism, your language, your care. A strong cover letter opens the door; a careless one, full of mistakes, can quietly close it. The good news is that a cover letter follows a fixed format, and once you learn it, you can write one for any post. This lesson teaches you that format step by step, with a ready sample, the rules to follow, and a worked example, and it is built for SSC and HSC students too, because your board exam asks you to write exactly this.

What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a short, formal letter that you send with your CV to request that the authority consider you for a particular job (CV

The cover letter and the CV or resume always travel together. The cover letter introduces you; the CV gives the full details.

For SSC and HSC Students: The Board Exam Task

If you are a student of a school or college, this lesson is directly for your exam. In SSC and HSC, the question does not ask for a cover letter alone. It asks you to “write a CV with a cover letter” for a given post. So you must write both, the cover letter first, then the CV, and your CV should not go beyond one page.

একটি নির্দিষ্ট পদের জন্য “write a CV with a cover letter” লিখতে বলা হয়। CV Format for Job Application.

So learn this cover letter format well, then pair it with the professional CV format to answer the full question.

What Each Paragraph Should Say

The body of the cover letter is three short paragraphs, and each has one clear job. Do not mix them up.

Cover letter

  • Opening paragraph: name the post you are applying for and say where and when you saw the advertisement.
  • Middle paragraph: this is the heart. Show why you fit, your qualifications, skills, and any experience, and connect them to the post.
  • Closing paragraph: politely request an interview, give your contact details, and thank the reader.

Rules and Tips for a Strong Cover Letter

A few simple rules separate a good cover letter from a weak one. Follow them every time.

  • Keep it to one page. A cover letter is short, never long.
  • Keep the tone formal and polite. This is a business letter, not a chat.
  • Check every word for spelling and grammar. One mistake can cost you the job.
  • Tailor it to the post. Change the markers, do not send the same letter blindly.
  • Match your skills to the job. Say why you fit this post, not just that you want it.
  • Always include the Enclosures list at the end.

Practice: Board Exam Questions

Try these real board-style questions. For each, write a CV with a cover letter, using the format above, and keep the CV to one page.

  1. Social Islami Bank Limited invites applications for the post of Junior Officer. You are Taher/Tahera, keen to build a career as a banker. Write a CV with a cover letter for the post.
  2. You are Shamim/Shamima, looking for a job. You have seen an advertisement for the post of an Assistant Teacher in a school. Write a CV with a cover letter. Your CV should not exceed one page.
  3. You are Limon/Lima and have completed your MA in English. You have seen an advertisement that an English Teacher will be appointed in ‘X’ High School, Dhaka. Write a CV with a cover letter for the post.
  4. You are Fahim/Fahima and have completed your post-graduation. You have seen a vacancy for the post of an Assistant Teacher of English in a reputed school. Write a CV with a cover letter for the post.

A Tip for the Exam and Real Life

Remember one simple idea: the cover letter tells the reader who you are and why you want the post, and the CV proves it with details. In the exam, write the cover letter first, keep it to three short paragraphs, and then attach a one-page CV. Change the markers to match the question, check every line for spelling, and end with the Enclosures list. Do this, and both in the exam hall and in real life, your application will look professional and complete.
