Open any newspaper and you will find them everywhere, short, factual accounts of what happened: a fire in a busy market, a road accident on the highway, a colourful function at a college. Writing one of these is called report writing, and it is a favourite in HSC, degree, and job exams.
It sounds like a journalist’s job, but here is the good news that will set you at ease: a report follows a fixed format, and once you learn its parts and keep to a simple, factual style, you can report on any event or incident with ease. In this lesson: Report Writing, I will teach you both kinds you need, the newspaper report and the event report, with full sample reports.
What is a Report?
A report is a factual, written account of an event, an incident, or an issue, written for a particular reader in a formal tone. It is not a made-up story; it tells only what really happened, clearly and objectively. Because the event has already taken place, a report is written in the past tense.
The Two Types You Need
For your exams, you need two kinds of report. Learn to tell them apart, because their focus is a little different.
পরীক্ষার জন্য প্রধানত দুই ধরনের report সম্পর্কে জানা দরকার। এদের মধ্যে পার্থক্য বুঝে নাও, কারণ দুটির focus কিছুটা ভিন্ন।
| Type | What it reports | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Newspaper report (সংবাদপত্রের রিপোর্ট) | an incident or issue: accident, fire, load shedding, price hike | facts of what happened |
| Event report (অনুষ্ঠানের রিপোর্ট) | a programme: sports day, prize-giving, 21 February, study tour | the programme in order |
Part 1: The Newspaper Report
A newspaper report follows a fixed set of parts. Learn them in order, because the format itself carries a good share of the marks.
Newspaper report একটি নির্দিষ্ট format অনুসরণ করে লেখা হয়। অংশগুলো সঠিক ক্রমে শিখে রাখো, কারণ সঠিক format ভালো নম্বর পাওয়ার গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ।
Rule 1: The Headline
Start with a short, striking headline that sums up the news in a few words. It should tell the reader at a glance what the report is about, like a title over the story. Keep it brief and to the point.
Report-এর শুরুতে একটি ছোট, আকর্ষণীয় headline লিখবে, যা কয়েকটি শব্দেই মূল news-এর সারাংশ প্রকাশ করে। Headline দেখেই যেন পাঠক বুঝতে পারে reportটি কী নিয়ে। এটি সংক্ষিপ্ত ও সরাসরি হওয়া উচিত।
Example:
- Devastating Fire Guts a Market in Dhaka
Rule 2: The Byline
Under the headline comes the byline, which names the reporter, usually as ‘By a Staff Correspondent’ or ‘By a Reporter’. Do not write your own name here; the byline is given in the question or kept general.
Headline-এর নিচে byline লিখতে হয়। এখানে reporter-এর পরিচয় উল্লেখ থাকে। সাধারণত ‘By a Staff Correspondent’ বা ‘By a Reporter’ লেখা হয়। এখানে নিজের নাম লিখবে না। Question-এ কোনো নাম দেওয়া থাকলে সেটি অনুসরণ করবে, অন্যথায় সাধারণ byline ব্যবহার করবে।
Example:
- By a Staff Correspondent
Rule 3: The Dateline (Place and Date)
Next comes the dateline, the place from which the report is filed and the date, written together at the start of the first paragraph. It fixes the news in place and time.
এরপর dateline লিখবে। এখানে reportটি কোন place থেকে এবং কোন date-এ লেখা হয়েছে তা একসঙ্গে উল্লেখ করা হয়। সাধারণত প্রথম paragraph-এর শুরুতেই এটি লেখা হয়। এর মাধ্যমে news-এর স্থান ও সময় পরিষ্কার হয়।
Example:
- Dhaka, 10 March 2026:
Rule 4: The Opening Paragraph (the 5 W’s)
The first paragraph is the lead, and it must answer the key questions at once: what happened, when, where, who was involved, and why. This short opening gives the reader the whole news in a nutshell before the details.
Report-এর প্রথম paragraph-কে lead বলা হয়। এখানে শুরুতেই পাঁচটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেওয়া উচিত:
- What happened?
- When did it happen?
- Where did it happen?
- Who was involved?
- Why did it happen?
এই ছোট opening paragraph-এই পাঠক পুরো ঘটনার মূল তথ্য এক নজরে পেয়ে যায়।
Example:
- A terrible fire broke out in Karwan Bazar early yesterday morning, destroying more than fifty shops within a few hours.
Rule 5: The Body (Details in Order)
After the lead, give the details in a logical, usually chronological, order: how the event unfolded, its causes, the losses, and any eyewitness accounts. Write in the third person and the past tense, and use the passive voice where it fits, such as “the fire was brought under control”.
Example:
- According to eyewitnesses, the fire started from an electric short circuit at about 3:00 a.m. Seven units of the fire service rushed to the spot and brought it under control after three hours.
Rule 6: The Conclusion
End with the outcome or the present situation: the losses counted, an inquiry ordered, or the demands of the people. This closes the report on a factual note, without any personal opinion.
Example:
- The cause of the fire is being investigated, and the affected traders have demanded proper compensation.
The Golden Rules of Report Writing
Keep this chart of do’s and don’ts in mind for both types of report.
Newspaper report এবং event report, দুই ক্ষেত্রেই কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ do’s and don’ts মনে রাখা দরকার।
| Always do this (করবে) | Never do this (করবে না) |
|---|---|
| Write in the past tense (past tense এ লেখো) | Use the present tense (present tense নয়) |
| Keep a formal, factual tone (তথ্যনির্ভর সুর) | Add your own opinion (নিজের মতামত নয়) |

The cause of the fire is being investigated, and the shopkeepers have demanded proper compensation from the authorities.
Part 2: The Event Report
An event report describes a programme that was held, such as a sports day, a prize-giving ceremony, or the observance of a national day. It uses the same headline, byline, and dateline, but the body describes the programme in the order it happened.
Event report-এ আগে অনুষ্ঠিত কোনো programme-এর বিবরণ দেওয়া হয়। যেমন sports day, prize-giving ceremony বা national day observance। এখানেও headline, byline এবং dateline ব্যবহার করা হয়। তবে body-তে programme-এর ঘটনাগুলো যে ক্রমে ঘটেছে, সেই ক্রমেই বর্ণনা করতে হয়।
- In the body of an event report, follow the programme step by step: how it began, who inaugurated it, the chief guest and the speeches, the cultural items, the prize-giving, and how it ended. Name the key people and keep the order clear.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not write a report in the present tense. A report describes something that has already happened, so keep your verbs in the past: broke out, rushed, was held, urged. Slipping into the present is a common and costly error.
- Do not add your own feelings or opinions. A report is factual and objective, so leave out ‘I think’ and personal comments. Report only what happened, as a neutral observer.
- Do not forget the headline, byline, and dateline. These three parts mark a report as a report, and many students lose easy marks by skipping them. Always place them at the top.
- Do not write the events out of order. In an event report especially, describe the programme in the sequence it happened, from the opening to the close. A jumbled order confuses the reader and weakens the report.
যেসব সাধারণ ভুল এড়িয়ে চলবে
- Report present tense-এ লিখবে না। Report সাধারণত এমন ঘটনা বর্ণনা করে যা ইতিমধ্যে ঘটে গেছে, তাই verb past tense-এ রাখবে, যেমন broke out, rushed, was held, urged।

A Tip for the Exam
The secret to report writing is that the format carries the marks, so never lose them to a wrong layout. Begin every report with a clear headline, a byline, and a dateline, then give the 5 W’s in the opening paragraph and the details in order.
Write in the past tense and the third person, use the passive voice where it fits, and keep out every trace of personal opinion. Stay around 130 to 150 words, and finish with the outcome. Practise a few common topics, a road accident, load shedding, a prize-giving ceremony, a national day, and this question will become one of your safest scorers.
