Completing Story: Rules & Sample Stories for SSC and HSC

Learn how to complete a story for SSC and HSC English 1st paper: the rules for adding sentences, keeping the flow, writing in the past tense, and giving a title, with worked and sample stories, useful phrases, and practice beginnings.

In the exam, you are given the first few lines of a story and told to finish it, adding at least ten sentences of your own, and then to give it a suitable title. It sounds like it needs a special writer’s imagination, but here is the good news that will set your mind at ease: completing a story follows a simple, repeatable method.

You read the opening, guess where it is heading, carry it forward step by step to a clear ending, and top it with a fitting title. Learn the rules, practise a few common stories, and this ten-mark question becomes one you can walk into with real confidence. In this lesson: Completing Story, I will teach you the rules and show you full sample stories.

What is This Question: Completing Story?

In SSC and HSC English 1st paper, this is Question 9, headed “Read the beginning of the story below. Add at least ten sentences to complete the story and give a suitable title to it.” You are given the opening of a story, and you must carry it on to a full ending with at least ten new sentences, then supply a title. It carries ten marks. The given lines are not counted, so your own ten sentences are what earns the marks.

SSC ও HSC English 1st Paper-এ এটি Question 9 হিসেবে আসে। প্রশ্নটির নির্দেশনা সাধারণত থাকে: “Read the beginning of the story below. Add at least ten sentences to complete the story and give a suitable title to it.”

The Rules of Completing a Story

Here are the rules that turn a blank fear into a clear plan. Follow them in order.

এখানে এমন কিছু সহজ নিয়ম দেওয়া হলো, যেগুলো অনুসরণ করলে গল্প কীভাবে শেষ করবে তা নিয়ে আর দ্বিধায় পড়তে হবে না। নিয়মগুলো একে একে সঠিক ক্রমে অনুসরণ করো।

Rule 1: Read the Beginning and Catch the Direction

Before you write a word, read the given opening two or three times. Ask yourself who the characters are, where they are, and what problem or event is starting. This opening is a signpost; it quietly points to where the story must go. Once you feel that direction, the rest becomes much easier.

Rule 2: Add at Least Ten New Sentences

The question asks for at least ten sentences, so give ten or a few more, never fewer. Do not repeat the given lines; write fresh sentences that carry the story forward. Keep each sentence simple and correct, because ten clear sentences score better than five fancy ones full of mistakes.

Rule 3: Keep It Logical and Connected

A good story flows like a river, each event leading naturally to the next. Do not jump suddenly or add things that do not fit. Every sentence you add should grow out of the one before it, so the reader never feels a bump. Stay true to the characters and the situation you were given.

Rule 4: Write in the Past Tense

Stories are told in the past tense, so keep your verbs in the past throughout: went, said, saw, thought. Do not slip into the present by mistake. Our lesson on right forms of verbs helps you keep the tense steady.

গল্প সাধারণত past tense-এ লেখা হয়, তাই পুরো গল্পজুড়ে verb-গুলো past tense-এ রাখো, যেমন went, said, saw, thought। ভুল করে মাঝখানে present tense-এ চলে যেয়ো না।

Tense সঠিকভাবে বজায় রাখতে আমাদের Right Forms of Verbs বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।

Rule 5: Use Linking Words to Move the Story

Linking words carry the reader smoothly from one event to the next. Use ‘one day’, ‘then’, ‘after that’, ‘suddenly’, ‘as a result’, and ‘at last’ to mark the steps of the story. These small words make your writing feel like a real, connected tale. See our lesson on sentence connectors.

Linking word একটি ঘটনা থেকে পরের ঘটনায় পাঠককে সহজে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যায়। গল্পের বিভিন্ন ধাপ বোঝাতে ‘one day’, ‘then’, ‘after that’, ‘suddenly’, ‘as a result’ এবং ‘at last’-এর মতো linking word ব্যবহার করো। এই ছোট word-গুলোই গল্পের ঘটনাগুলোকে একে অন্যের সঙ্গে যুক্ত করে এবং পুরো লেখাটিকে একটি স্বাভাবিক ও ধারাবাহিক গল্পের মতো করে তোলে।

Linking word-এর ব্যবহার আরও ভালোভাবে বুঝতে আমাদের Sentence Connectors বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।

Rule 6: Build to an Ending with a Moral

Every good story reaches a clear ending, and most exam stories carry a moral, a lesson the story teaches. Guide your story to its climax, finish it neatly, and let the moral shine through the ending. You can even state it in the last line, such as “So we see that greed brings ruin.”

চাইলে শেষ বাক্যে সরাসরি moral-টিও লিখতে পারো, যেমন: “So we see that greed brings ruin.”

Rule 7: Give a Suitable Title

Finish by giving the story a short, suitable title that matches its theme or moral. Write it at the top or the bottom, as your teacher prefers. For capitals, begin the first word and every main word with a capital letter, but keep small words like ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘of’, ‘and’, and ‘in’ in lowercase, unless one starts the title. So it is “The Golden Touch” and “Grasp All, Lose All”.

সবশেষে গল্পের theme বা moral-এর সঙ্গে মানানসই একটি ছোট ও উপযুক্ত title দাও। তোমার teacher যেভাবে পছন্দ করেন, title গল্পের ওপরে বা নিচে লিখতে পারো। Title লেখার সময় প্রথম word এবং প্রতিটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ word-এর প্রথম letter capital হবে। তবে ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘of’, ‘and’ এবং ‘in’-এর মতো ছোট word সাধারণত lowercase-এ থাকবে, যদি না সেগুলোর কোনোটি title-এর শুরুতে আসে।

যেমন: “The Golden Touch” এবং “Grasp All, Lose All”।

A Worked Example

Let me complete one story with you, so you can see the rules in action. Here is the given beginning.

এবার চলো, একটি গল্প একসঙ্গে সম্পূর্ণ করি, যাতে তুমি নিয়মগুলো বাস্তবে কীভাবে প্রয়োগ করতে হয় তা দেখতে পারো।

প্রথমে প্রশ্নে দেওয়া শুরুর অংশটি দেখি।

Given beginning: Once there lived a farmer in a village. He had a wonderful goose. It laid a golden egg every day. ………

My completion (the added sentences): The farmer sold the eggs and slowly grew rich. But he was a greedy man, and one egg a day was never enough for him. He began to think that the goose must have a great lump of gold inside its body. So he made up his mind to get all the gold at once. One day he killed the goose and cut open its belly. But to his horror, he found nothing inside it. There was no gold at all, only flesh and blood. The foolish farmer had lost his goose and his golden egg forever. He wept bitterly, but it was far too late. His own greed had ruined him completely.

Title: Grasp All, Lose All Moral: Greed leads to loss.

Notice how the completion stays in the past tense, moves step by step with linking words, and ends with a clear moral. That is all the question wants.

খেয়াল করো, পুরো গল্পটি past tense-এ রাখা হয়েছে, linking word ব্যবহার করে ঘটনাগুলো ধাপে ধাপে এগিয়েছে এবং শেষে একটি স্পষ্ট moral দিয়ে গল্পটি শেষ হয়েছে। এই প্রশ্নে মূলত এতটুকুই চাওয়া হয়।

Two More Sample Stories

Here are two more completed stories to learn the pattern. Read how each one flows to its moral.

প্যাটার্নটা শেখার জন্য আরও দুটো সম্পূর্ণ গল্প এখানে দেওয়া হলো। প্রতিটা কীভাবে এর moral এ বয়ে চলে তা পড়ো।

Failure Is the Pillar of Success

Once there was a king named Bruce. He was defeated in battle again and again. One day, tired and hopeless, he lay hiding in a cave. There he saw a little spider trying to climb up to its web. The spider fell down again and again, but it never gave up. At its seventh try, it at last reached the web. This small sight filled Bruce with new hope. He told himself that he too must try once more. He gathered his soldiers and attacked the enemy again. This time he fought bravely and won a great victory. (Moral: Never give up; try, try again.)

The Lion and the Mouse

Once a lion was sleeping in a forest. A little mouse began to run over his body in play. The lion woke up and caught the mouse in his big paw. The frightened mouse begged for its life and promised to help the lion one day. The lion laughed at the idea but kindly let the little mouse go. A few days later, the lion was caught in a hunter’s net. He roared in pain but could not free himself. Hearing his roar, the mouse came running at once. It cut the ropes of the net with its sharp little teeth. Thus the tiny mouse saved the mighty lion’s life. (Moral: No act of kindness is ever wasted.)

Useful Phrases for Storytelling

Keep these ready-made phrases to move your story along smoothly.

গল্পের ঘটনাগুলো স্বাভাবিক ও ধারাবাহিকভাবে এগিয়ে নিতে এই ready-made phrase-গুলো মনে রাখো।

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not write fewer than ten sentences. The question clearly asks for at least ten, so count them and add a couple more to be safe. Too few sentences means you lose marks even if the story is good.
  • Do not change the tense in the middle. A story stays in the past tense from start to finish. Many students begin in the past but slip into the present; read your story back to catch any such slip.
  • Do not wander away from the given beginning. Whatever you add must fit the characters and the situation you were handed. Do not suddenly bring in a new, unrelated story; carry forward the one that was started.
  • Do not forget the title. A story without a title loses easy marks. Give a short title that matches the moral, and capitalize it properly, main words with a capital letter, small words in lowercase.

Practice Exercise

Complete each story below by adding at least ten sentences of your own, and give each a suitable title. A hint about the theme or moral is given to guide you.

নিচের প্রতিটা গল্প নিজের অন্তত দশটা বাক্য যোগ করে সম্পূর্ণ করো, আর প্রতিটাকে একটা মানানসই শিরোনাম দাও। পথ দেখাতে বিষয় বা moral সম্পর্কে একটা ইঙ্গিত দেওয়া আছে।

  1. Once there lived a hare who was very proud of his speed. One day he laughed at a slow tortoise and challenged him to a race. ……… (Hint: slow and steady wins the race)
  2. Once a shepherd boy watched his sheep near a village. To have some fun, he cried out, “A wolf! A wolf!” though there was none. ……… (Hint: nobody believes a liar)
  3. Once a thirsty crow flew here and there in search of water on a hot day. At last he found a pitcher with a little water at the bottom. ……… (Hint: where there is a will, there is a way)
  4. An old farmer had three sons who always quarrelled with one another. One day the farmer fell ill and called his sons to his bedside. ……… (Hint: unity is strength)
  5. Once a greedy dog found a piece of meat and ran off to eat it alone. On his way, he had to cross a narrow bridge over a river. ……… (Hint: grasp all, lose all)

Guidance and a Model Answer

For each story, plan the events in order, write ten or more past-tense sentences joined with linking words, build to the moral in the hint, and add a title. Here is a full model for the first one.

Model for Story 1 — The Hare and the Tortoise: The tortoise quietly accepted the challenge. The race began, and the hare ran far ahead in no time. Feeling sure of his win, he lay down under a tree and soon fell asleep. The tortoise, though slow, kept walking without a stop. Step by step, he passed the sleeping hare and moved towards the goal. After some time, the hare woke up and rushed to the finish. But by then the tortoise had already crossed the line. The proud hare was ashamed of his defeat. He had learnt his lesson at last. (Title: Slow and Steady Wins the Race)

A Tip for the Exam

The secret to completing a story is to plan before you write. Take one minute to picture the whole story in your mind: the problem, the main events, the ending, and the moral. Then write ten or twelve simple past-tense sentences, joined by linking words, that carry the story to that ending. Finish with a title that fits the moral.

Do not chase difficult words; a clear, correct, well-connected story wins full marks. Learn a handful of common stories, the hare and the tortoise, the greedy dog, King Bruce and the spider, and you will find that most exam beginnings match one of them.

“The Hare and the Tortoise”, “The Greedy Dog”, “King Bruce and the Spider”-এর মতো কয়েকটি পরিচিত গল্প ভালোভাবে শিখে রাখো। তাহলে দেখবে, পরীক্ষায় দেওয়া অনেক story beginning-ই এই পরিচিত গল্পগুলোর কোনো একটির সঙ্গে মিলে যায়।

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the completing story question in SSC and HSC?

It is Question 9 in English 1st paper, where you are given the beginning of a story and must add at least ten sentences to complete it and give it a suitable title. It carries ten marks, and the given lines are not counted.

How many sentences should I add to complete a story?

You must add at least ten new sentences of your own, and a couple more is safer. The given opening lines do not count towards your ten sentences.

What tense should I use in a completing story?

Write the whole story in the past tense, since stories are told about events that have already happened. Keep verbs like went, said, and saw in the past from start to finish.

How do I give a title to a story?

Give a short title that matches the story’s theme or moral, and capitalize the first word and every main word, keeping small words like ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘of’, and ‘and’ in lowercase. For example, “Grasp All, Lose All”.

What if I do not know the original story?

It does not matter. You may complete the story in your own logical way. The examiner looks for a sensible, well-connected ending in correct English, not the exact original story.
