Verb: Types (Finite, Non-Finite, Auxiliary) with Examples

Learn all verb types: finite, non-finite, auxiliary, transitive, causative, and more, with the forms and rules tested in SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams. With Bengali explanations.

Try to make a sentence without a verb. You cannot. “Rahim a book” is not a sentence; “Rahim reads a book” is. That one word, reads, is what brings the sentence to life. This is why the verb is often called the heart of a sentence, and why understanding its types is so important for every exam you will sit.

একটি verb ছাড়া বাক্য বানানোর চেষ্টা করো, পারবে না। “Rahim a book” কোনো বাক্য নয়; কিন্তু “Rahim reads a book” একটি সম্পূর্ণ বাক্য। ওই একটি শব্দ reads ই বাক্যটিতে প্রাণ এনে দেয়। এই কারণেই verb কে বলা হয় বাক্যের হৃদয় (heart of a sentence), আর এর প্রকারভেদ বোঝা প্রতিটি পরীক্ষার জন্যই খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

Verbs can look confusing because they are sorted in several different ways at once. But do not worry. In this lesson we will go step by step, from the basic types you need for J.S.C and S.S.C, up to finite, non-finite, causative, and the verb forms that come in H.S.C, admission, and job exams. Learn it once, properly, and verbs will stop being scary.

What is a Verb?

A verb is a word that expresses an action or a state of being. In simple words, a verb tells us what the subject does (an action) or what the subject is (a state).

Verb হলো এমন একটি শব্দ যা কোনো কাজ (action) অথবা অবস্থা (state) প্রকাশ করে। সহজ কথায়, verb আমাদের বলে subject কী করছে (কাজ) অথবা subject কেমন আছে (অবস্থা)।

For Example:

  • Action: He runs fast. She wrote a letter.
  • State: He is happy. They seem tired.

You can check the basics at Cambridge Dictionary for extra reference, and this lesson connects closely with the parts of speech.

The Big Picture: Types of Verb

Principal Verb and Auxiliary Verb

A principal verb (also called the main verb) carries the main meaning of the sentence. An auxiliary verb (also called a helping verb) helps the main verb to form a tense, a question, a negative, or the passive.

Principal verb (বা main verb) বাক্যের মূল অর্থ বহন করে। আর auxiliary verb (বা helping verb) main verb কে tense, প্রশ্ন, negative বা passive তৈরি করতে সাহায্য করে। মূল verb টিই আসল কাজ বোঝায়, আর helping verb শুধু তাকে সাহায্য করে।

For Example:

He is writing a letter. (Here, ‘writing’ is the principal verb, and ‘is’ is the auxiliary.)

Auxiliary verbs come in two kinds. Learn both lists.

Auxiliary verb দুই ধরনের। দুটি তালিকাই শিখে নাও।

Primary auxiliaries: be (am, is, are, was, were, been, being), have (have, has, had), do (do, does, did). These three can also work as main verbs on their own.

Modal auxiliaries: can, could, shall, should, will, would, may, might, must, ought to, need, dare, used to. A modal is always followed by the base form of the verb, and it does not add ‘s’ for the third person. So we say “He can go”, never “He cans go”.

Primary auxiliary: be, have, do. এরা আবার একা main verb হিসেবেও বসতে পারে। Modal auxiliary: can, could, shall, should, will, would, may, might, must, ought to ইত্যাদি। মনে রাখবে, modal এর পরে সবসময় verb এর base form বসে, আর third person এ ‘s’ যোগ হয় না। তাই “He can go” হয়, কখনোই “He cans go” নয়। এটি পরীক্ষায় একটি সাধারণ ফাঁদ।

Finite Verb

A finite verb is a verb that changes its form according to the subject, the number, and the tense. It is called ‘finite’ (meaning limited) because it is limited or controlled by its subject. A finite verb can stand as the main verb of a sentence.

Finite verb হলো এমন verb যা subject, number এবং tense অনুযায়ী তার রূপ পরিবর্তন করে। একে ‘finite’ (অর্থাৎ সীমাবদ্ধ) বলা হয়, কারণ এটি তার subject দ্বারা সীমাবদ্ধ বা নিয়ন্ত্রিত হয়। Finite verb একটি বাক্যের main verb হিসেবে বসতে পারে।

For Example:

He goes to school. (singular subject) They go to school. (plural subject) He went to school. (past tense)

দেখো, subject আর tense বদলানোর সাথে সাথে verb টির রূপও বদলে যাচ্ছে (goes, go, went)। এভাবে যে verb subject অনুযায়ী বদলায়, সেটিই finite verb।

Non-Finite Verb

A non-finite verb does not change with the subject, number, or tense. It is not limited by the subject, so it cannot act alone as the main verb. There are three kinds of non-finite verb, and this is a very common exam topic, so learn all three.

Non-finite verb subject, number বা tense অনুযায়ী বদলায় না। এটি subject দ্বারা সীমাবদ্ধ নয়, তাই এটি একা main verb হিসেবে বসতে পারে না। Non-finite verb তিন ধরনের, আর এটি পরীক্ষায় খুব আসে, তাই তিনটিই ভালোভাবে শেখো।

1. Infinitive: ‘to + verb’ (to go, to eat, to read). After a modal, the ‘to’ is dropped (this is called the bare infinitive): “I can go“.

১. Infinitive: ‘to + verb’ (to go, to eat)। modal এর পরে ‘to’ বাদ পড়ে (bare infinitive), যেমন “I can go”।

2. Gerund: a ‘verb + ing’ form used as a noun. “Swimming is good for health.” Here ‘swimming’ names an activity, so it works like a noun.

২. Gerund: ‘verb + ing’ যা noun এর কাজ করে, যেমন “Swimming is good”। এখানে swimming একটি কাজের নাম বোঝাচ্ছে, তাই এটি noun এর মতো কাজ করছে।

3. Participle: a verb form used as an adjective. The present participle ends in -ing (a running boy), and the past participle is the third form (a broken glass).

৩. Participle: verb এর রূপ যা adjective এর কাজ করে, যেমন “a running boy” (present participle) আর “a broken glass” (past participle)।

A key point that catches students out. In the sentence “Walking is good exercise”, ‘walking’ is a gerund (a noun). But in “The walking man is my uncle”, ‘walking’ is a participle (an adjective). Same word, different job. Always look at the job it does.

একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় যেখানে অনেকে ভুল করে। “Walking is good exercise” বাক্যে ‘walking’ একটি gerund (noun)। কিন্তু “The walking man is my uncle” বাক্যে ‘walking’ একটি participle (adjective)। একই শব্দ, কিন্তু ভিন্ন কাজ। তাই সবসময় দেখো শব্দটি বাক্যে কী কাজ করছে।

Transitive and Intransitive Verb

A transitive verb needs an object to complete its meaning. A intransitive verb does not take an object; its meaning is complete on its own. Remember this pair well, because only a transitive verb can be changed into the passive voice.

Transitive verb এর অর্থ পূর্ণ করতে একটি object দরকার হয়। আর intransitive verb কোনো object নেয় না; এর অর্থ নিজেই সম্পূর্ণ। এই জোড়াটি ভালোভাবে মনে রাখো, কারণ শুধু transitive verb কেই passive voice এ পরিবর্তন করা যায়, intransitive verb কে নয়।

For Example:

Transitive: He kicks the ball. (What does he kick? the ball, so it has an object)

Intransitive: The baby sleeps. (There is no object; the meaning is complete)

Note: Many verbs can be both, depending on use. “He runs fast” (intransitive) but “He runs a business” (transitive).

মনে রাখো: অনেক verb ব্যবহার অনুযায়ী দুই রকমই হতে পারে। “He runs fast” (intransitive), কিন্তু “He runs a business” (transitive)।

Regular and Irregular Verb

A regular verb forms its past tense and past participle by simply adding -ed. A irregular verb changes its form in its own way. You must memorise the irregular ones, because they come in almost every exam.

Regular verb এর past tense ও past participle শুধু -ed যোগ করে তৈরি হয়। কিন্তু irregular verb তার নিজস্ব নিয়মে রূপ পরিবর্তন করে। irregular verb গুলো মুখস্থ রাখতেই হবে, কারণ এগুলো প্রায় প্রতিটি পরীক্ষায় আসে।

TypeBase (v1)Past (v2)Past participle (v3)
Regularwalkwalkedwalked
Regularplayplayedplayed
Irregulargowentgone
Irregularbreakbrokebroken
Irregularwritewrotewritten
Irregularbeginbeganbegun

Knowing these three forms is the foundation of the right form of verbs and all your tenses, so do not skip them.

এই তিনটি রূপ জানা থাকাই right form of verb এবং সব tense এর ভিত্তি, তাই এগুলো কখনো এড়িয়ে যেয়ো না।

Linking Verb

A linking verb does not show any action. Instead, it links the subject to a word that describes or renames it. The most common linking verb is ‘be’ (am, is, are, was, were), but verbs like seem, become, appear, look, feel, taste, smell, sound, remain, and grow can also be linking verbs.

Linking verb কোনো কাজ বোঝায় না। বরং এটি subject কে এমন একটি শব্দের সাথে যুক্ত করে যা subject কে বর্ণনা করে বা নতুন নাম দেয়। সবচেয়ে পরিচিত linking verb হলো ‘be’ (am, is, are), কিন্তু seem, become, appear, look, feel, taste, smell, sound, remain এর মতো verb ও linking verb হতে পারে।

For Example:

  • She is a doctor.
  • The soup tastes delicious.
  • He became angry.

দেখো, এখানে verb গুলো কোনো কাজ বোঝাচ্ছে না, বরং subject আর তার বর্ণনাকে জুড়ে দিচ্ছে। এই কারণেই এদের linking verb বলা হয়।

Causative Verb (Important for Admission and Job Exams)

A causative verb shows that the subject does not do the action itself, but causes someone else to do it. The main causative verbs are make, let, have, get, and help. This is a favourite topic at the admission and job level, mainly because of the small structure differences.

Causative verb বোঝায় যে subject কাজটি নিজে করে না, বরং অন্য কাউকে দিয়ে কাজটি করায়। প্রধান causative verb গুলো হলো make, let, have, get, help। ছোট ছোট গঠনগত পার্থক্যের কারণে admission ও job পর্যায়ে এটি একটি প্রিয় topic।

Structures to remember:

  • make / let / have + object + bare infinitive: I made him go. She let him play.
  • get + object + to-infinitive: I got him to do the work.
  • have / get + object + past participle (when someone else does it for you): I had my hair cut. She got the car repaired.

মনে রাখার গঠন: make/let/have + object + bare infinitive (I made him go)। get + object + to-infinitive (I got him to do it)। আর কেউ তোমার হয়ে কাজটি করে দিলে have/get + object + past participle (I had my hair cut)। এই ছোট পার্থক্যগুলোই পরীক্ষায় ধরা হয়।

Important Verb Rules for the Exam

These are the points competitive exams test again and again. Learn them well.

এই পয়েন্টগুলো competitive exam এ বারবার আসে। ভালোভাবে শেখো।

Rule 1: A modal is always followed by the base form of the verb, with no ‘s’ and no ‘to’. (He can go, not “can goes” or “can to go”.)

Rule 2: Only a transitive verb (a verb with an object) can be turned into the passive voice.

Rule 3: A gerund, not an infinitive, follows a preposition. (“He is fond of swimming“, not “to swim”.)

Rule 4: Some verbs are followed by a gerund (enjoy, finish, avoid, mind), and some by an infinitive (want, hope, decide, agree). (“I enjoy reading“, “I want to read“.)

Rule 5: After the causative ‘make’ and verbs of perception (see, hear, watch) in the active voice, use the bare infinitive: “I made him go“, “I saw him go“.

গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম মনে রাখো: Rule 3 আর Rule 4 পরীক্ষায় সবচেয়ে বেশি আসে। preposition এর পরে সবসময় gerund বসে (fond of swimming)। আর enjoy, finish, avoid এর পরে gerund, কিন্তু want, hope, decide এর পরে infinitive বসে। এই দুটি নিয়ম আলাদা করে মনে রাখলে অনেক নম্বর নিশ্চিত।

How to Identify a Verb (Quick Trick)

Here is a fast test. If a word can change its tense (today I walk, yesterday I walked), or if it tells you what the subject does or is, then it is a verb. You can also put a subject like ‘I’ or ‘he’ in front of it and see if it makes sense.

দ্রুত পরীক্ষা: কোনো শব্দ যদি tense বদলাতে পারে (আজ walk, গতকাল walked), অথবা subject কী করছে বা কেমন আছে তা বোঝায়, তাহলে সেটি verb। এছাড়া শব্দটির আগে ‘I’ বা ‘he’ এর মতো subject বসিয়ে দেখো, অর্থপূর্ণ হলে সেটি verb।

Practice Exercise with Answers

  • Part A: Name the type of the bold verb (finite / non-finite, or transitive / intransitive).
  • Part B: Fill in the gap with the correct form.

নিজে চেষ্টা করার পরে নিচের উত্তরগুলো মিলিয়ে নাও।

Part A:

  1. He wants to win the prize.
  2. The sun rises in the east.
  3. Swimming is a good exercise.
  4. She posted a letter.

Part B:

5. He can ______ (go / goes / to go) now. 6. She is fond of ______ (read / reading / to read). 7. I had my shoes ______ (repair / repaired / repairing). 8. They enjoy ______ (play / to play / playing) football.

Answers

Part A:

  1. to win = Non-finite verb (infinitive)
  2. rises = Finite verb (also intransitive)
  3. Swimming = Non-finite verb (gerund)
  4. posted = Finite verb (also transitive)

Part B: 5. go (a modal takes the base form) 6. reading (a preposition takes a gerund) 7. repaired (causative: have + object + past participle) 8. playing (‘enjoy’ is followed by a gerund)

A Tip for the Exam

Do not just memorise the names of the types. The real marks come from the small rules: base form after a modal, gerund after a preposition, and the correct three forms of irregular verbs. When you see a verb question, ask yourself two things: what form does the word before it demand, and is this verb finite or non-finite? Those two questions solve most tricky verb problems.
