Noun: Definition, Types, and Examples in English Grammar

Learn what a noun is and the five types of nouns (proper, common, collective, material, abstract) with clear rules, Bengali explanations, and examples for SSC and HSC.

Today, we are going to discuss the noun: what it is, how many types of nouns there are, and how to recognise each one in a sentence. The noun is the first and most important of the parts of speech, and almost every sentence you read or write is built around one. If your idea of a noun is clear, the rest of grammar, from articles and number to transformation and voice, becomes far easier. That is why we treat it as the foundation of the whole subject.

This lesson gives you the definition, the five types with rules and examples, a quick trick to spot a noun in any sentence, and a practice exercise with answers. The question on nouns and their types is common in J.S.C, S.S.C, H.S.C, university admission, and job exams, so it is worth learning properly once.

What is a Noun?

A noun is a word that names a person, a place, a thing, an animal, or an idea. Anything you can name is a noun. The word ‘noun’ itself comes from a word meaning ‘name’, and that is the simplest way to remember it: a noun is a naming word.

Noun হলো এমন একটি শব্দ যা কোনো ব্যক্তি, স্থান, বস্তু, প্রাণী বা ভাবের নাম বোঝায়। সহজ কথায়, তুমি যা কিছুর নাম দিতে পারো, তার সবই noun। ‘Noun’ শব্দটি এসেছে ‘name’ বা নাম শব্দ থেকে, তাই মনে রাখার সবচেয়ে সহজ উপায় হলো: noun মানেই নামবাচক শব্দ।

For Example:

  • Person: Rahim, teacher, mother
  • Place: Dhaka, school, market
  • Thing: book, table, phone
  • Animal: cat, lion, cow
  • Idea: honesty, love, freedom

Types of Noun at a Glance

There are five main types of noun. This table gives you the whole picture at once. Read it first, then study each type in detail below.

Noun এর প্রধান প্রকার পাঁচটি। নিচের টেবিলটি একনজরে পুরো বিষয়টি দেখিয়ে দেয়। প্রথমে এটি দেখে নাও, তারপর নিচে প্রতিটি প্রকার বিস্তারিত পড়ো।

Type of NounWhat it names (কী বোঝায়)Examples
Proper NounThe specific name of one particular person, place, or thingRahim, Dhaka, the Padma
Common NounThe general name of a whole class or kindboy, city, river
Collective NounA group of persons or things taken as oneteam, family, herd
Material NounA substance or material we measure, not countgold, water, rice
Abstract NounA quality, state, or idea we cannot see or touchhonesty, beauty, childhood

Proper Noun

A proper noun is the specific name of one particular person, place, or thing. It points to that one thing and no other. A proper noun always begins with a capital letter, no matter where it sits in the sentence.

For Example: Rahim, Bangladesh, Dhaka, the Padma, Sunday, January, the Quran.

Note: A proper noun names one specific thing (Dhaka), while a common noun names the general class it belongs to (city).

Common Noun

A common noun is the general name given to every person or thing of the same kind or class. It does not point to one particular thing; it covers the whole group. A common noun does not take a capital letter unless it begins the sentence.

For Example: boy, girl, city, river, book, dog, teacher.

Collective Noun

A collective noun is the name of a group or collection of persons or things taken together as one whole.

For Example: team, family, class, herd, flock, army, crowd, committee, bunch.

Example sentence: The team is playing well today. (team = one unit, so the verb is singular)

Material Noun

A material noun is the name of a material or substance that we can measure or weigh but usually cannot count one by one.

Material noun হলো এমন কোনো পদার্থ বা উপাদানের নাম যা আমরা মাপতে বা ওজন করতে পারি, কিন্তু সাধারণত একটি-দুটি করে গুনতে পারি না। এই গুনতে না পারার বৈশিষ্ট্যটাই material noun কে চেনার সবচেয়ে সহজ উপায়। যেমন তুমি “three golds” বা “two waters” বলতে পারবে না; বরং বলবে some gold অথবা a glass of water।

For Example: gold, silver, iron, water, milk, rice, salt, oil, cotton.

Abstract Noun

An abstract noun is the name of a quality, state, action, or idea that we can feel or think about but cannot see or touch.

For Example: honesty, kindness, beauty, courage, childhood, freedom, poverty, wisdom.

Other Ways Nouns Are Classified

Besides the five types above, nouns are grouped in two more ways that you will meet in exams.

By whether they can be counted, nouns are either countable (book, boy, apple) or uncountable (water, rice, information). By whether they name something physical, nouns are either concrete (things you can see or touch, like table, dog, and Dhaka) or abstract (ideas and qualities, like love and honesty).

উপরের পাঁচটি প্রকার ছাড়াও পরীক্ষায় noun কে আরও দুইভাবে ভাগ করা হয়। গুনতে পারা যায় কিনা তার উপর ভিত্তি করে noun হয় countable (book, boy) অথবা uncountable (water, rice)। আবার বাস্তবে দেখা বা ছোঁয়া যায় কিনা তার উপর ভিত্তি করে noun হয় concrete (table, dog) অথবা abstract (love, honesty)।

Functions of a Noun in a Sentence

In a sentence, a noun can do several jobs. It can be the subject (the doer of the action), the object (which receives the action), or a complement. Learning to see which job a noun is doing will help you later in transformation, voice change, and right form of verbs.

একটি বাক্যে noun বিভিন্ন কাজ করতে পারে। এটি subject (যে কাজ করে) হতে পারে, object (যার উপর কাজ পড়ে) হতে পারে, আবার complement ও হতে পারে। কোন noun কী কাজ করছে তা চিনতে পারলে পরবর্তীতে transformation, voice change আর right form of verb এর মতো অধ্যায়গুলো তোমার কাছে অনেক সহজ হয়ে যাবে।

For Example:

Rahim reads a book. (Rahim = subject, book = object)

How to Identify a Noun (Quick Trick)

Here is a quick test you can use on any sentence. If a word answers the question “who?” or “what?”, or if you can place “a”, “an”, “the”, or a number in front of it, then it is usually a noun.

যেকোনো বাক্যে ব্যবহার করার জন্য এখানে একটি দ্রুত পরীক্ষা দিলাম। কোনো শব্দ যদি “কে?” (who) বা “কী?” (what) প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয়, অথবা শব্দটির আগে যদি “a”, “an”, “the” বা কোনো সংখ্যা বসানো যায়, তাহলে সেটি সাধারণত noun। এই ছোট্ট পরীক্ষাটি মনে রাখলে যেকোনো বাক্যে noun খুঁজে বের করা তোমার জন্য সহজ হয়ে যাবে।

For Example: In “The boy ate an apple“, ask “who ate?” (boy) and “ate what?” (apple). Both answers are nouns.

A Tip for the Exam

Do not just memorise the five types; learn to spot them inside a sentence, because that is how the question is set. Remember that one word can change its type depending on how it is used. The word “youth” can be an abstract noun (the quality of being young) or a common noun (a young person). So always look at how the word works in the sentence before you decide.
