Theme Writing for HSC English 1st Paper: Rules & Sample Themes

Learn theme writing for HSC English 1st paper Question 11: what a theme is, how it differs from a summary, the rules for writing the theme of a poem in about 50 words, sample themes, and practice tasks for HSC students in Bangladesh.

Every poem hides a heart, a single big idea that the poet really wants you to feel, whether it is love, loss, the beauty of nature, or the power of a dream. Writing down that central idea in a few clear sentences is called theme writing, and in HSC English 1st paper it is Question 11. Here is where many students go wrong: they retell the poem line by line, but that is a summary, not a theme.

In this lesson: Theme Writing, I will show you the difference clearly, teach you the simple rules for writing a theme, and give you sample themes to learn the method from. Learn to find the heart of a poem, and this question becomes easy marks.

What is Theme Writing?

The theme of a poem is its central idea or main message, the deeper meaning that runs through the whole poem. In HSC English 1st paper, Question 11 asks you to write the theme of a poem (or sometimes a prose piece) from the English For Today textbook, in a short, crisp paragraph of about fifty words. You are not asked what happens in the poem; you are asked what it means.

Theme vs Summary: The Key Difference

This is the single most important thing to understand, so listen closely. A summary tells what happens in the poem, the events and details, step by step. A theme tells what the poem means, its central message or lesson. If you catch yourself writing “First the poet says… then he says…”, you are writing a summary, not a theme. Our lesson on summary writing covers the other skill.

এটি সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পার্থক্য, তাই ভালোভাবে মনে রাখো। Summary-তে poem-এ কী ঘটেছে, কোন ঘটনা বা detail কোন ক্রমে এসেছে, সেগুলো সংক্ষেপে লেখা হয়। আর theme-এ poem-টির মূল অর্থ, central message বা শিক্ষা তুলে ধরা হয়।

যদি তুমি লিখতে শুরু করো, “First the poet says… then he says…”, তাহলে বুঝবে তুমি theme নয়, summary লিখছ। Summary Writing সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত জানতে আমাদের Summary Writing বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।

Summary (সারসংক্ষেপ)Theme (মূলভাব)
Tells what happens (কী ঘটে)Tells what it means (মানে কী)
Follows the poem’s events in order (ঘটনার ক্রম)States the central message (কেন্দ্রীয় বার্তা)
Can be longer (তুলনায় বড়)Very short, about 50 words (প্রায় ৫০ শব্দ)
“The poet describes …”“The poem deals with …”

The Rules of Writing a Good Theme

Follow these five rules, and you will write a clear, correct theme every time.

এই পাঁচটি নিয়ম অনুসরণ করলে তুমি প্রতিবারই একটি পরিষ্কার, সঠিক এবং সুন্দরভাবে গুছানো theme লিখতে পারবে।

Rule 1: Find the Central Idea First

Before you write, read the poem and ask one question: what is this poem really about, beneath its words? Look for the single big idea or feeling that runs through it, love, death, nature, freedom, hope, or loss. That one idea is your theme. Find it before you write a word.

Example:

  • Central idea of ‘Dreams’: how important it is to hold on to our dreams.

Rule 2: State the Message, Not the Story

A theme is not a retelling of the poem. Do not describe the events line by line. Instead, state the deeper message or lesson the poet wants to give. Ask yourself, “What is the poet trying to teach me?” and write that.

Theme মানে poem-এর ঘটনাগুলো আবার বর্ণনা করা নয়। Line ধরে ধরে কী ঘটেছে তা লিখবে না। বরং কবি যে গভীর message বা শিক্ষা দিতে চান, সেটিই তুলে ধরবে। নিজেকে জিজ্ঞেস করো, “কবি আমাকে কী শেখাতে চাইছেন?” তারপর সেই উত্তরটিই theme হিসেবে লেখো।

Example:

  • Not “First the poet says a dream is a bird …”, but “The poem shows that a life without dreams is empty and lifeless.”

Rule 3: Keep It Short, About Fifty Words

Question 11 wants a crisp answer, roughly fifty words in a single paragraph. Say the central idea clearly and stop. Do not pad it with extra details or repeat yourself; a short, sharp theme scores better than a long, loose one.

Rule 4: Use the Present Tense and Your Own Words

Write the theme in the present tense, because a poem’s message is always alive: “The poem shows …”, “The poet says …”, “The poem deals with …”. And use your own words; never copy lines from the poem. Our lesson on right forms of verbs helps with the tense.

Theme সব সময় present tense-এ লিখবে, কারণ poem-এর message সব সময় প্রাসঙ্গিক থাকে। যেমন: “The poem shows …”, “The poet says …”, “The poem deals with …”। এছাড়া theme নিজের ভাষায় লিখবে। Poem থেকে line হুবহু copy করবে না। Tense সঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করতে আমাদের Right Forms of Verbs বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।

Rule 5: Open with the Poem’s Name and Poet

Begin your theme by naming the poem and its poet, then state the central idea. This opening makes your answer clear and complete from the first line. For example, “The poem ‘Dreams’ by Langston Hughes deals with …”.

Theme-এর শুরুতে poem-এর নাম এবং poet-এর নাম উল্লেখ করো, তারপর central idea তুলে ধরো। এতে প্রথম line থেকেই তোমার উত্তর পরিষ্কার ও সম্পূর্ণ মনে হয়।

যেমন: “The poem ‘Dreams’ by Langston Hughes deals with …”।

Common Theme Words

When you name a theme, these are the big ideas poems most often explore. Learn them so you can name a theme quickly.

Poem-এর theme চিহ্নিত করার সময় কিছু বড় idea বারবার দেখা যায়। এগুলো ভালোভাবে শিখে রাখলে তুমি খুব দ্রুত poem-এর central idea বা theme চিনতে পারবে।

Read the Poem, Then Write the Theme

The best way to learn is to read a whole poem and then see its theme. Here are two classic poems in full, followed by their themes. Read each poem first, feel its central idea, and then study the theme below it.

Poem 1: To Daffodils, by Robert Herrick

Fair Daffodils, we weep to see You haste away so soon; As yet the early-rising sun Has not attain’d his noon. Stay, stay, Until the hasting day Has run But to the even-song; And, having pray’d together, we Will go with you along.

We have short time to stay, as you, We have as short a spring; As quick a growth to meet decay, As you, or anything. We die As your hours do, and dry Away, Like to the summer’s rain; Or as the pearls of morning’s dew, Ne’er to be found again.

Theme: The poem ‘To Daffodils’ by Robert Herrick reflects on the shortness of life and beauty. The poet compares human beings to daffodils, which bloom and fade very quickly. Just as the flowers die soon, human life too is brief and passing. The poem teaches us that nothing on earth lasts forever.

Poem 2: I died for Beauty, by Emily Dickinson

I died for Beauty—but was scarce Adjusted in the Tomb When One who died for Truth, was lain In an adjoining Room—

He questioned softly “Why I failed”? “For Beauty”, I replied— “And I—for Truth—Themself are One— We Brethren, are”, He said—

And so, as Kinsmen, met a Night— We talked between the Rooms— Until the Moss had reached our lips— And covered up—our names—

Theme: The poem ‘I died for Beauty’ by Emily Dickinson explores the close bond between beauty and truth. Two people, one who died for beauty and one for truth, meet in their graves and call themselves kinsmen, for the two ideals are really one. The poem suggests that beauty and truth are eternal, though human life and even the memory of it fade away.

Emily Dickinson-এর ‘I Died for Beauty’ কবিতায় সৌন্দর্য ও সত্যের গভীর সম্পর্ক তুলে ধরা হয়েছে।

More Sample Themes

For the poems still under copyright, read the poem in your own English For Today textbook, then write the theme in your own words. Here are model themes for a few of them, each in about fifty words. Study how each states the central message and never retells the poem. (Do not memorise these blindly; understand the poem, then shape the theme yourself.)

‘Dreams’ by Langston Hughes

The poem ‘Dreams’ by Langston Hughes highlights how important it is to hold on to our dreams. The poet warns that a life without dreams is empty and lifeless. He compares such a life to a bird that cannot fly and a barren, frozen field. Dreams give life its hope, meaning, and direction.

‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree’ by W.B. Yeats

The poem ‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree’ by W.B. Yeats expresses the poet’s deep longing for peace in the lap of nature. Tired of the noise of city life, he dreams of a simple, quiet life close to nature, where his restless heart will at last find calm and comfort.

‘Those Winter Sundays’ by Robert Hayden

The poem ‘Those Winter Sundays’ by Robert Hayden reveals a father’s silent, selfless love for his family. Looking back, the grown-up speaker feels deep regret for never thanking his father, who quietly bore hardship to care for others. The poem reminds us that love is often shown through unspoken sacrifice.

A Note on Prose Themes

Question 11 may sometimes ask for the theme of a prose piece instead of a poem. The method is exactly the same: state the central message or lesson of the text in about fifty words, and do not retell the plot detail by detail. Simply ask what the writer wants the reader to learn, and write that clearly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not retell the poem line by line. That is a summary, not a theme. The examiner wants the central message, so state the idea and the lesson, not the sequence of events.
  • Do not copy lines from the poem. A theme must be in your own words. Quoting the poet’s lines shows you have not understood the poem, and it is not what the question asks for.
  • Do not write too much. The theme should be about fifty words. A long, rambling answer often drifts into summary and loses the sharp central point. Keep it short and focused.
  • Do not just memorise ready-made themes without understanding. If the exam poem is a little different from your memorised one, a blindly learnt theme will not fit. Understand each poem’s central idea, then you can write its theme in any form the question takes.

Practice Exercise

Write the theme of each poem below in about fifty words, stating its central message in your own words. A model answer is given for the first one.

নিচের প্রতিটি poem-এর theme প্রায় ৫০ শব্দে নিজের ভাষায় লেখো। Theme-এ poem-এর central message স্পষ্টভাবে তুলে ধরবে। প্রথম poem-টির জন্য একটি model answer দেওয়া হয়েছে।

  1. ‘The Schoolboy’ by William Blake. (Hint: a child’s love of freedom and nature against the joylessness of school.)
  2. ‘Out, Out’ by Robert Frost. (Hint: the fragility of human life and the tragedy of child labour.)
  3. ‘September 1, 1939’ by W.H. Auden. (Hint: the fear and moral crisis at the outbreak of war, and the need for love over hate.)
  4. Write the theme of any prose piece from your textbook in about fifty words.

Model Answer for Poem 1

The poem ‘The Schoolboy’ by William Blake expresses a child’s love of freedom and nature against the joyless confinement of school. On a bright summer morning, the boy longs to enjoy the songs of birds, but he is instead shut in a classroom under a strict teacher. Blake suggests that education should never crush a child’s natural joy.

A Tip for the Exam

The secret to theme writing is to stop retelling and start explaining. Read the poem, find the one big idea at its heart, and then write, in about fifty words and in your own words, what that idea is and what the poet wants us to learn. Begin with the poem’s name and poet, use the present tense, and keep it short and sharp.

Above all, understand the poem rather than memorising a ready theme, because a poem you truly understand you can always write about. Practise the themes of your textbook poems this way, and Question 11 will be an easy ten… or the marks it carries, safely in your pocket.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is theme writing in HSC English?

Theme writing is Question 11 of HSC English 1st paper, where you write the theme, that is, the central idea or main message, of a poem or prose piece from the English For Today textbook, in a short paragraph of about fifty words.

What is the difference between a theme and a summary?

A summary tells what happens in the text, its events in order, while a theme tells what the text means, its central message or lesson. A theme is much shorter and states the idea, not the story.

How long should a theme be?

A theme should be about fifty words, written in one crisp paragraph. Say the central message clearly in your own words and stop, without padding or retelling the poem.

How do I find the theme of a poem?

Read the poem and ask what it is really about beneath its words. Look for the single big idea or feeling that runs through it, such as love, nature, hope, or loss. That central idea is the theme.

Can I memorise themes for the exam?

It is better to understand each poem than to memorise a ready-made theme. If the exam poem or question is a little different, a blindly learnt theme will not fit. Once you understand a poem’s central idea, you can write its theme in any form.
