What is the Future Continuous Tense?

The future continuous tense (also called the future progressive) expresses an action that will be going on at a certain time in the future (ভবিষ্যতের কোনো সময়ে চলমান থাকবে এমন কাজ)।

Future continuous tense (একে future progressive ও বলা হয়) এমন একটি কাজ প্রকাশ করে যা ভবিষ্যতের কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে চলতে থাকবে।

It is one of the twelve tenses. If you have not yet seen the full picture, read our classification of tenses first, along with the present continuous and past continuous tenses, which share the same -ing pattern.

এটি বারোটি tense এর একটি। পুরো ছবিটি এখনো না দেখে থাকলে আগে classification of tenses পড়ে নাও।

Signal words (চিহ্ন): at this time tomorrow, at 5 pm tomorrow, this time next week, next year, soon, in an hour.

The Structure

We use the auxiliary “shall be / will be” with the -ing form of the verb.

আমরা “shall be / will be” এর সাথে verb এর -ing রূপ ব্যবহার করি।

Structure: subject + shall/will be + (verb + ing) + object + extension.

FormStructureExample
Affirmative (হাঁ-বোধক)subject + shall/will be + verb-ingThis time tomorrow, we will be flying to Cox’s Bazar.
Negative (না-বোধক)subject + shall/will + not + be + verb-ingHe will not be attending the meeting tomorrow.
Interrogative (প্রশ্নবোধক)Shall/Will + subject + be + verb-ing?Will you be using the car this evening?

A note on ‘shall’ and ‘will’. Old grammar books use ‘shall’ with I and we, and ‘will’ with other subjects. In modern English, however, ‘will’ is used with all subjects, and ‘shall’ now sounds formal or old-fashioned. For exams, either is accepted, but ‘will’ is the safer, more natural choice.

‘shall’ আর ‘will’ নিয়ে একটি নোট। পুরনো grammar বই I ও we এর সাথে ‘shall’, আর অন্য subject এর সাথে ‘will’ ব্যবহার করে। তবে আধুনিক ইংরেজিতে সব subject এর সাথেই ‘will’ ব্যবহৃত হয়, আর ‘shall’ এখন আনুষ্ঠানিক বা পুরনো ধাঁচের শোনায়। পরীক্ষায় দুটোই গ্রহণযোগ্য, তবে ‘will’ বেশি স্বাভাবিক ও নিরাপদ।

Examples:

  • At 8 pm tonight, she will be studying for her exam.
  • The players will be practising on the field tomorrow morning.
  • I shall be waiting for your reply.
  • This time next year, they will be living in Canada.

Negative and Interrogative Forms

To make it negative, put not after ‘shall/will’. To make a question, move ‘shall/will’ to the front.

Negative করতে হলে ‘shall/will’ এর পরে not বসাও। প্রশ্ন করতে হলে ‘shall/will’ বাক্যের শুরুতে আনো।

Examples:

  • Negative: We will not be joining the tour next week.
  • Negative: She will not be teaching this class tomorrow.
  • Interrogative: Will they be coming to the party?
  • Interrogative: Will you be needing any help?

The Main Uses of the Future Continuous Tense

1. An Action in Progress at a Future Time

This is the core use: something will be going on at a particular moment in the future.

এটাই মূল ব্যবহার: ভবিষ্যতের একটি নির্দিষ্ট মুহূর্তে কিছু একটা চলতে থাকবে।

Examples:

  • At noon tomorrow, I will be sitting in the exam hall.
  • This time next week, we will be relaxing on the beach.

2. A Planned or Expected Future Action

We also use it for actions we expect to happen as part of the normal course of events, and for polite questions about someone’s plans.

স্বাভাবিক নিয়মে ঘটবে বলে আশা করা কাজের জন্য, এবং কারো পরিকল্পনা নিয়ে ভদ্রভাবে প্রশ্ন করতে আমরা এটি ব্যবহার করি।

Examples:

  • We will be launching the new project next month.
  • Will you be using your laptop tonight? (a polite enquiry)

3. An Ongoing Future Action Interrupted by a Shorter One

When a longer future action is interrupted by a shorter one, the longer action takes the future continuous, and the shorter action after ‘when’ takes the present simple, not ‘will’.

যখন একটি দীর্ঘ ভবিষ্যৎ কাজ একটি ছোট কাজ দ্বারা বাধাগ্রস্ত হয়, তখন দীর্ঘ কাজটি future continuous এ বসে, আর ‘when’ এর পরের ছোট কাজটি present simple এ বসে, ‘will’ এ নয়।

Structure: Future Continuous + when + Present Simple.

Examples:

  • I will be sleeping when you arrive. (not “when you will arrive”)
  • She will be cooking when the guests come.

4. Two Parallel Actions at the Same Time

For two actions going on together in the future, use ‘while’. The action in the ‘while’ clause usually takes the present continuous, and the main action takes the future continuous.

ভবিষ্যতে একসাথে চলা দুটি কাজের জন্য ‘while’ ব্যবহার করো। ‘while’ clause এর কাজটি সাধারণত present continuous এ বসে, আর মূল কাজটি future continuous এ বসে।

Examples:

  • While you are studying, I will be preparing dinner.
  • While the children are playing, their mother will be resting.

The Time-Clause Rule (Very Important)

This is where most students lose marks, so learn it well. After the time conjunctions when, while, before, after, as soon as, and until, do not use ‘will’. Use the present tense instead, even though the meaning is future.

এখানেই বেশিরভাগ শিক্ষার্থী নম্বর হারায়, তাই ভালোভাবে শেখো। when, while, before, after, as soon as, until এর মতো সময়সূচক conjunction এর পরে ‘will’ ব্যবহার করা যায় না। অর্থ ভবিষ্যৎ হলেও সেখানে present tense বসে।

Examples:

  • Correct: I will be waiting at the gate when you reach. (not “when you will reach”)
  • Correct: He will be working until the sun sets. (not “until the sun will set”)

A Common Trap: Stative Verbs

Some verbs describe a state rather than an action, and they are not normally used in the continuous form. These include know, believe, understand, love, like, want, need, and own. With these, use the future simple instead.

কিছু verb কাজ নয় বরং একটি অবস্থা বোঝায়, আর এদের সাধারণত continuous রূপে ব্যবহার করা হয় না। এদের মধ্যে আছে know, believe, understand, love, want, need, own। এদের ক্ষেত্রে future continuous এর বদলে future simple ব্যবহার করো।

Examples:

  • Correct: You will know the result tomorrow. (not “will be knowing”)
  • Correct: They will need more time. (not “will be needing”)

  2. Do not call at 9 pm; we ______ (have) dinner then.
  3. She ______ (wait) for you when you ______ (arrive).

  1. will be relaxing
  2. will be having
  3. will be waiting; arrive (present simple after ‘when’)
  4. Willbe using
  5. are studying (present continuous after ‘while’); will be preparing

A Tip for the Exam

When you see a future time marker like “at this time tomorrow” or “this time next week” attached to an action in progress, the future continuous is your answer. But keep one rule burned into your memory: after when, while, before, after, and until, never write ‘will’, use the present tense. That single rule is the most common trap in this tense, and getting it right sets your answer apart.

যখন কোনো চলমান কাজের সাথে “at this time tomorrow” বা “this time next week” এর মতো ভবিষ্যৎ সময় প্রকাশক দেখবে, তখন future continuous ই উত্তর। তবে একটি নিয়ম মাথায় গেঁথে রাখো: when, while, before, after, until এর পরে কখনো ‘will’ লিখো না, present tense বসাও। এই একটি নিয়মই এই tense এর সবচেয়ে বড় ফাঁদ, আর এটি সঠিক করলে তোমার উত্তর আলাদা হয়ে ওঠে।
