Look at this sentence: “I have been waiting for you since morning.” It tells you two things at once, that the waiting started at a point in the past, and that it is still going on. That mix of a past start and a present, ongoing action, with the time made clear, is the whole idea of the present perfect continuous tense. Once you feel that, the rest is easy. This lesson takes you from the basic structure up to the finer rules that come in admission and job exams.

এই বাক্যটি দেখো: “I have been waiting for you since morning।”

What is the Present Perfect Continuous Tense?

The present perfect continuous tense expresses an action that began in the past, has continued for a period of time, and is usually still going on now (অতীতে শুরু হয়ে এখনো চলছে এমন কাজ)। The key sign is that the length of time is mentioned.

Present perfect continuous tense এমন একটি কাজ প্রকাশ করে যা অতীতে শুরু হয়েছে, কিছু সময় ধরে চলেছে এবং সাধারণত এখনো চলছে। এর মূল চিহ্ন হলো কাজটি কতক্ষণ ধরে চলছে তা উল্লেখ করা থাকে।

It is a combined form of two tenses you already know: the present continuous tense and the present perfect tense. This lesson is part of our full classification of tenses.

এটি তোমার আগে থেকে জানা দুটি tense এর মিলিত রূপ: present continuous tense এবং present perfect tense।

Signal words (চিহ্ন): for, since, how long, all day, all morning, lately, recently.

The Structure

Here is the basic structure. Notice how it borrows from both parent tenses.

এই হলো মূল গঠন। লক্ষ্য করো এটি কীভাবে তার দুই মূল tense থেকে অংশ নিয়েছে।

Structure: subject + have/has + been + (verb + ing) + for/since + time.

FormStructureExample
Affirmative (হাঁ-বোধক)subject + have/has been + verb-ingShe has been cooking since noon.
Negative (না-বোধক)subject + have/has + not + been + verb-ingShe has not been cooking since noon.
Interrogative (প্রশ্নবোধক)Have/Has + subject + been + verb-ing?Has she been cooking since noon?

Where the parts come from (কোথা থেকে এলো): the auxiliary ‘have/has’ comes from the present perfect tense, the ‘verb + ing’ comes from the present continuous tense, and ‘been’ joins the two together. Seeing this makes the structure easy to remember.

গঠনের ‘have/has’ এসেছে present perfect tense থেকে, ‘verb + ing’ এসেছে present continuous tense থেকে, আর ‘been’ এই দুটিকে জুড়ে দিয়েছে। এভাবে দেখলে গঠনটি মনে রাখা সহজ হয়।

Examples:

  • The children have been playing in the garden for an hour.
  • My father has been working in this bank since 2015.
  • It has been raining heavily since last night.
  • We have been learning English for several years.

Negative and Interrogative Forms

To make it negative, add not after ‘have/has’. To make a question, move ‘have/has’ to the front of the sentence.

Negative করতে হলে ‘have/has’ এর পরে not বসাও। আর প্রশ্ন করতে হলে ‘have/has’ বাক্যের শুরুতে আনো।

Examples:

  • Negative: They have not been living here for long.
  • Negative: He has not been feeling well lately.
  • Interrogative: Have you been waiting for me since morning?
  • Interrogative: Has it been snowing all day?

Since and For: The Most Important Point

This tense almost always carries a time expression, and you must choose correctly between ‘since’ and ‘for’. Get this right and you get the tense right.

এই tense প্রায় সবসময় একটি সময় প্রকাশক শব্দ বহন করে, আর তোমাকে ‘since’ ও ‘for’ এর মধ্যে সঠিকটি বাছতে হয়। এটি ঠিক হলে পুরো tense ঠিক হয়।

Use ‘for’ with a period of time (কত সময় ধরে, একটি ব্যাপ্তি)।

Examples:

  • She has been reading for two hours.
  • They have been friends for ten years.
  • I have been living here for a long time.

Use ‘since’ with a point of time (কখন থেকে, একটি নির্দিষ্ট শুরুর বিন্দু)।

Examples:

  • She has been reading since 4 pm.
  • They have been friends since childhood.
  • I have been living here since 2018.

A quick test: if the time answers “how long?”, use ‘for’. If it answers “starting when?”, use ‘since’. A clock time, a day, a date, or a year takes ‘since’; a length like two hours or five years takes ‘for’.

একটি দ্রুত পরীক্ষা: সময়টি যদি “কতক্ষণ ধরে?” প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয়, তাহলে ‘for’। আর যদি “কখন থেকে?” প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয়, তাহলে ‘since’। ঘড়ির সময়, দিন, তারিখ বা সাল হলে ‘since’, আর দুই ঘণ্টা বা পাঁচ বছরের মতো ব্যাপ্তি হলে ‘for’।

An Exceptional Rule: The Verb ‘Be’

If the only verb in a sentence is ‘be’ (am, is, are), it does not take the -ing form here. Instead, the whole thing becomes ‘have been / has been’.

যদি বাক্যের একমাত্র verb হয় ‘be’ (am, is, are), তাহলে এটি এখানে -ing রূপ নেয় না। বরং পুরোটা হয়ে যায় ‘have been / has been’।

Examples:

  • I have been in Rajshahi for five years. (not “have been being”)
  • He has been ill since last Sunday.
  • They have been absent for three days.

Present Perfect vs Present Perfect Continuous

Students at the admission and job level are often tested on this difference, so learn it well. The present perfect tense stresses that an action is complete. The present perfect continuous stresses that an action is ongoing and how long it has lasted.

Admission ও job পর্যায়ে এই পার্থক্য নিয়ে প্রায়ই প্রশ্ন আসে, তাই ভালোভাবে শেখো। Present perfect tense জোর দেয় কাজটি সম্পন্ন হয়েছে তার উপর। আর present perfect continuous জোর দেয় কাজটি চলছে এবং কতক্ষণ ধরে চলছে তার উপর।

Examples:

  • I have written three letters. (present perfect: the letters are finished)
  • I have been writing letters all morning. (present perfect continuous: the activity has been going on)

Stative Verbs: A Common Trap

Some verbs describe a state, not an action, and they are not normally used in the continuous form. These include know, believe, understand, love, like, hate, want, need, own, and seem. With these, use the simple present perfect instead.

কিছু verb কোনো অবস্থা বোঝায়, কাজ নয়, আর এদের সাধারণত continuous রূপে ব্যবহার করা হয় না। এদের মধ্যে আছে know, believe, understand, love, like, hate, want, need, own, seem। এদের ক্ষেত্রে present perfect continuous এর বদলে simple present perfect ব্যবহার করো।

Examples:

  • Correct: I have known him for ten years. (not “have been knowing”)
  • Correct: She has loved music since childhood. (not “has been loving”)

  1. He ______ (wait) ______ two hours.
  2. They ______ (build) the bridge ______ January.
  3. It ______ (rain) ______ this morning.
  4. I ______ (study) English ______ five years.
  5. She ______ (not / feel) well ______ Monday.

Answers

  1. has been waiting for two hours.
  2. have been building the bridge since January.
  3. has been raining since this morning.
  4. have been studying English for five years.
  5. has not been feeling well since Monday.

A Tip for the Exam

Whenever you see a time expression with ‘since’ or ‘for’ attached to an ongoing action, this tense is almost certainly the answer. So your first move is to spot the time marker, then decide ‘since’ or ‘for’, then build the “have/has been + verb-ing” structure. But pause for two checks: is the verb a stative verb (then use simple present perfect), and is the only verb ‘be’ (then use “have/has been”). Those two checks save the marks that careless students lose.

যখনই কোনো চলমান কাজের সাথে ‘since’ বা ‘for’ যুক্ত একটি সময় প্রকাশক দেখবে, তখন প্রায় নিশ্চিতভাবে এই tense ই উত্তর। তাই প্রথম কাজ হলো time marker খুঁজে বের করা, তারপর ‘since’ না ‘for’ ঠিক করা, তারপর “have/has been + verb-ing” গঠন তৈরি করা। তবে দুটি বিষয় একবার যাচাই করো: verb টি কি stative verb (তাহলে simple present perfect), আর একমাত্র verb কি ‘be’ (তাহলে “have/has been”)। এই দুটি যাচাই সেই নম্বরগুলো বাঁচায় যা অসতর্ক শিক্ষার্থীরা হারায়।
