Read these two lines: “It was raining. We went out.” Now read this one: “Although it was raining, we went out.” Can you feel the difference? That one little word, ‘although’, builds a bridge between the two ideas and turns two broken sentences into one smooth, meaningful thought. Those bridge-words are called connectors or linkers, and they are exactly what lift a pile of choppy sentences into flowing, mature writing.
Best of all, they carry easy marks, the board even sets a whole question on them: “Complete the passage using suitable connectors.” In this lesson: Sentence connectors and linkers, I will give you the full list, sorted by the job each one does, along with the simple rules for using them correctly.
এই দুটি sentence পড়ো: “It was raining. We went out.” এবার এই sentence-টি পড়ো: “Although it was raining, we went out.”
এমনকি শিক্ষা বোর্ড এ বিষয়ে একটি সম্পূর্ণ প্রশ্নও দিয়ে থাকে: “Complete the passage using suitable connectors.” এই পাঠে আমি তোমাকে connector-এর পূর্ণাঙ্গ তালিকা দেব, প্রতিটি কোন কাজে ব্যবহৃত হয় সে অনুযায়ী সাজিয়ে। পাশাপাশি এগুলো সঠিকভাবে ব্যবহারের সহজ নিয়মও ব্যাখ্যা করব।
What are Connectors (Linkers)?
Connectors, also called linkers or transition words, are words or phrases that join ideas, sentences, or paragraphs and show the relationship between them, whether one idea adds to another, opposes it, causes it, or follows it. They give your writing what teachers call coherence, that smooth logical flow from one thought to the next. This lesson pairs closely with our list of linking words and phrases; here we focus on the rules and the exam use.
Connectors in the Exam
Let me point out where this pays off. In the board exam, there is a question worth 5 marks that gives you a short passage with blanks and asks you to “Complete the passage using suitable connectors.” Every blank is really one question: what is the relationship between these two ideas? Once you can name that relationship, the right connector almost chooses itself. So this whole topic is not about memorising a huge list; it is about learning to read the link between ideas.
Three Types of Connectors (This Decides the Punctuation)
Before the list, know this: connectors come in three grammatical types, and the type decides how you punctuate the sentence. This one idea saves you from most connector mistakes. For the base grammar, see our lesson on the Conjunction: Types and Rules.
| Type (ধরন) | Examples | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Coordinating conjunction (সমন্বয়কারী) | and, but, or, so, for, yet | joins two equal clauses; a comma comes before it (দুটি সমমানের clause-কে যুক্ত করে; এর আগে comma বসে) |
| Subordinating conjunction (অধীনতাসূচক) | because, although, since, if, when, while | attaches a dependent clause; a comma comes after it if it starts the sentence (একটি dependent clause-কে যুক্ত করে; এটি sentence-এর শুরুতে বসলে clause-এর শেষে comma বসে) |
| Transition word / conjunctive adverb (সংযোগকারী ক্রিয়াবিশেষণ) | however, therefore, moreover, nevertheless | starts a new sentence and takes a comma after it (নতুন একটি sentence শুরু করে এবং এর পরে comma বসে) |
The Golden Rule: Match the Connector to the Relationship
Here is the master rule that runs through this whole lesson: first decide the relationship between the two ideas, then choose the connector. If the second idea adds more, use an addition connector; if it opposes, use a contrast connector; if it gives a reason, use a cause connector. Name the link first, and you will never grab the wrong word.
Connectors by Function
Now the full list, grouped by the job each connector does. Learn each little family together.
এবার পূর্ণ তালিকাটি দেখো, যেখানে প্রতিটি connector-কে তার কাজ অনুযায়ী ভাগ করে সাজানো হয়েছে। একই ধরনের connector-গুলোকে ছোট ছোট গুচ্ছ হিসেবে একসঙ্গে শিখো।
1. Addition (Adding More)
Reach for these when your next idea pulls in the same direction as the last one, adding one more point on the same side. ‘Moreover’ and ‘furthermore’ feel a little formal; ‘besides’ and ‘also’ feel easier.
যখন পরের ভাবটি আগের ভাবের সঙ্গে একই দিকে এগিয়ে যায় এবং একই বিষয়ে আরও একটি তথ্য যোগ করে, তখন এই connector-গুলো ব্যবহার করো। ‘Moreover’ এবং ‘furthermore’ কিছুটা আনুষ্ঠানিক শোনায়, আর ‘besides’ ও ‘also’ তুলনামূলকভাবে সহজ।
| Connector | Meaning (অর্থ) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| and | এবং | He is honest and hardworking. |
| also / too | আরও / এছাড়াও | She sings; she dances too. |
| moreover | অধিকন্তু | He is poor. Moreover, he is ill. |
| furthermore | তদুপরি | The plan is costly. Furthermore, it is risky. |
| besides | এছাড়া | Besides English, she knows French. |
| in addition | উপরন্তু | In addition, he plays the guitar. |
| not only … but also | শুধু … নয় … ও | He is not only rich but also generous. |
2. Contrast (Showing a Difference)
Use these when the next idea pushes against the last one, something surprising or opposite. Just watch the grammar: ‘but’ and ‘yet’ join two clauses, ‘although’ and ‘though’ start a dependent clause, and ‘however’ starts a fresh sentence with a comma after it.
| Connector | Meaning (অর্থ) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| but | কিন্তু | He is rich but unhappy. |
| however | তবে / যাইহোক | It was late. However, she kept working. |
| yet / still | তবুও | He is busy, yet he helps others. |
| although / though | যদিও | Although he tried, he failed. |
| nevertheless | তা সত্ত্বেও | It was risky. Nevertheless, they went. |
| on the other hand | অন্যদিকে | Cars are fast. On the other hand, they pollute. |
| in spite of / despite | সত্ত্বেও | In spite of the rain, they played. |
| whereas / while | যেখানে / অথচ | He is calm, whereas his brother is restless. |
3. Cause and Reason (Telling Why)
These answer the question “why?”. ‘Because’, ‘since’, and ‘as’ start a clause, while ‘due to’ and ‘because of’ are followed by a noun, not a full sentence, so choose by what comes next.
এগুলো “কেন?” প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয়। ‘Because’, ‘since’ এবং ‘as’ একটি clause শুরু করে, আর ‘due to’ ও ‘because of’-এর পরে noun বসে, পূর্ণ sentence নয়। তাই এরপর কী আসছে, সেটি দেখে সঠিকটি বেছে নাও।
| Connector | Meaning (অর্থ) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| because | কারণ | He failed because he was careless. |
| since | যেহেতু | Since it was late, we went home. |
| as | যেহেতু | As she was ill, she rested. |
| due to / owing to | কারণে | The match stopped due to rain. |
| because of | এর কারণে | He is respected because of his honesty. |
4. Result and Effect (Telling the Outcome)
Use these when the second idea is the result of the first. ‘So’ is easy and common; ‘therefore’, ‘thus’, and ‘consequently’ feel more formal and usually start a sentence with a comma after them.
যখন দ্বিতীয় ভাবটি প্রথম ভাবের ফলাফল প্রকাশ করে, তখন এই connector-গুলো ব্যবহার করো। ‘So’ সহজ ও বহুল ব্যবহৃত; ‘therefore’, ‘thus’ এবং ‘consequently’ তুলনামূলকভাবে বেশি আনুষ্ঠানিক এবং সাধারণত sentence-এর শুরুতে বসে, এরপর comma আসে।
| Connector | Meaning (অর্থ) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| so | তাই | It rained, so we stayed in. |
| therefore | সুতরাং | He was late. Therefore, he missed the bus. |
| thus | এইভাবে | He worked hard. Thus, he succeeded. |
| hence | অতএব | The road is closed; hence, take another route. |
| as a result | ফলে | He ate too much. As a result, he felt sick. |
| consequently | ফলস্বরূপ | She studied hard. Consequently, she passed. |
5. Condition (Setting a Requirement)
These set the condition on which something happens. ‘If’ gives a positive condition, ‘unless’ gives a negative one (it means “if not”). Learn more in our lesson on Conditional Sentences (If Clauses).
কোনো কিছু ঘটার শর্ত বোঝাতে এই connector-গুলো ব্যবহার করা হয়। ‘If’ ইতিবাচক শর্ত দেয়, আর ‘unless’ নেতিবাচক শর্ত দেয়, যার অর্থ “if not”। এ বিষয়ে আরও জানতে আমাদের Conditional Sentences বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
| Connector | Meaning (অর্থ) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| if | যদি | If you work hard, you will pass. |
| unless | যদি না | You will fail unless you study. |
| provided that | এই শর্তে যে | You may go, provided that you finish first. |
| in case | যদি এমন হয় | Take an umbrella in case it rains. |
6. Comparison and Similarity (Showing Likeness)
Use these when the second idea is like the first in some way.
যখন দ্বিতীয় ভাবটির সঙ্গে প্রথম ভাবের কোনো মিল থাকে, তখন এই connector-গুলো ব্যবহার করো।
| Connector | Meaning (অর্থ) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| similarly | একইভাবে | Rina is honest. Similarly, her sister is truthful. |
| likewise | তেমনি | He respects elders. Likewise, his son does. |
| in the same way | একইভাবে | Plants need water. In the same way, they need light. |
7. Sequence and Order (Putting Things in Order)
These arrange steps or events in order, and they are perfect for a process paragraph or a story.
এগুলো ধাপ বা ঘটনাগুলোকে ধারাবাহিকভাবে সাজায়। কোনো প্রক্রিয়া বোঝানো paragraph বা গল্পে এগুলো খুব কার্যকর।
| Connector | Meaning (অর্থ) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| first / firstly | প্রথমত | First, wash the rice. |
| then / next | তারপর / এরপর | Then, boil it in water. |
| after that | তার পরে | After that, add some salt. |
| meanwhile | এদিকে | Meanwhile, cut the vegetables. |
| finally / lastly | শেষে / সবশেষে | Finally, serve it hot. |
8. Example and Illustration (Giving an Example)
Use these to introduce an example that makes your point clear.
তোমার বক্তব্য আরও পরিষ্কার করার জন্য কোনো উদাহরণ দিতে চাইলে এই connector-গুলো ব্যবহার করো।
| Connector | Meaning (অর্থ) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| for example | উদাহরণস্বরূপ | Eat healthy food, for example, fruit and vegetables. |
| for instance | যেমন | Some birds, for instance, the ostrich, cannot fly. |
| such as | যেমন | He plays games such as cricket and football. |
| namely | অর্থাৎ | Only one boy passed, namely Rahim. |
9. Emphasis (Stressing a Point)
Use these when you want to press a point home and make the reader feel its weight.
কোনো বিষয়কে বিশেষভাবে জোর দিয়ে পাঠকের কাছে তার গুরুত্ব তুলে ধরতে চাইলে এই connector-গুলো ব্যবহার করো।
| Connector | Meaning (অর্থ) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| indeed | প্রকৃতপক্ষে | She is indeed a brave girl. |
| in fact | আসলে | He looks calm; in fact, he is worried. |
| certainly | নিশ্চিতভাবে | This is certainly the best plan. |
| above all | সর্বোপরি | Above all, we must be honest. |
10. Conclusion and Summary (Wrapping Up)
Use these to close a paragraph or an essay and tie your ideas together at the end.
কোনো paragraph বা essay শেষ করতে এবং শেষে সব ভাবকে একসঙ্গে গুছিয়ে আনতে এই connector-গুলো ব্যবহার করো।
| Connector | Meaning (অর্থ) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| in conclusion | পরিশেষে | In conclusion, hard work always pays. |
| to sum up | সংক্ষেপে | To sum up, exercise keeps us fit. |
| in short | সংক্ষেপে | In short, honesty is the best policy. |
| overall | সামগ্রিকভাবে | Overall, the trip was a success. |
Punctuation Rules with Connectors
Get these three punctuation habits right and your connectors will always look correct. See our Punctuation Marks in English lesson for more.
এই তিনটি punctuation-এর নিয়ম ঠিকভাবে মানতে পারলে connector-এর ব্যবহার অনেক বেশি সঠিক হবে। আরও জানতে আমাদের Punctuation বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
- When a transition word starts a sentence, put a comma after it: “However, he came.” (কোনো transition word sentence-এর শুরুতে বসলে তার পরে comma দাও: “However, he came.”)
- When a coordinating conjunction joins two full clauses, put a comma before it: “He tried, but he failed.” (কোনো coordinating conjunction দুটি পূর্ণ clause-কে যুক্ত করলে তার আগে comma দাও: “He tried, but he failed.”)
- When a subordinate clause comes first, put a comma after it: “Although he tried, he failed.” When it comes second, you usually need no comma: “He failed although he tried.” (কোনো subordinate clause sentence-এর শুরুতে এলে তার পরে comma দাও: “Although he tried, he failed.” কিন্তু subordinate clause পরে এলে সাধারণত comma লাগে না: “He failed although he tried.”)
How to Answer “Complete the Passage Using Connectors”
Read the whole passage once before you fill anything in, so you feel its flow. Then, for each blank, look at the two ideas it sits between and ask what links them: addition, contrast, cause, result, sequence, or conclusion. Pick the connector that fits that link, check the punctuation, and make sure you do not repeat the same connector twice. Reading the relationship first is the whole secret.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not choose a connector by its “feel”; choose it by the relationship between the ideas. Students often drop in ‘moreover’ or ‘however’ just because they sound impressive, even when the meaning does not fit. Always ask first: do these ideas add, oppose, or cause? Then pick.
- Do not forget the comma after a transition word at the start of a sentence. Write “Therefore, he left,” not “Therefore he left.” That little comma is part of the rule, and examiners look for it.
- Do not overuse one connector, especially ‘however’. If every turn in your writing uses ‘however’, it starts to feel dull and repetitive. Vary your connectors, use ‘but’, ‘yet’, ‘although’, or ‘on the other hand’ to keep the writing fresh.
- Do not use two connectors for the same link in one sentence. Writing “Although he is poor, but he is honest” is a common error, because ‘although’ and ‘but’ do the same job here. Use only one: “Although he is poor, he is honest,” or “He is poor, but he is honest.”
লিখবে “Therefore, he left,” “Therefore he left” নয়। এই ছোট comma-টিও নিয়মের অংশ, এবং পরীক্ষকেরা এটি লক্ষ্য করেন।
- একই connector অতিরিক্ত ব্যবহার কোরো না, বিশেষ করে ‘however’। লেখার প্রতিটি মোড়ে ‘however’ ব্যবহার করলে লেখা একঘেয়ে ও পুনরাবৃত্তিমূলক হয়ে যায়। তাই বিভিন্ন connector ব্যবহার করো, যেমন ‘but’, ‘yet’, ‘although’ বা ‘on the other hand’।
- একই সম্পর্ক প্রকাশ করতে একটি sentence-এ দুটি connector ব্যবহার কোরো না। “Although he is poor, but he is honest” একটি প্রচলিত ভুল, কারণ এখানে ‘although’ এবং ‘but’ একই কাজ করছে। যেকোনো একটি ব্যবহার করো: “Although he is poor, he is honest,” অথবা “He is poor, but he is honest.”

A Tip for the Exam
The whole secret of connectors is to read the relationship, not to memorise a list. In the “complete the passage” question, look at the two ideas around each blank and name the link: is the second one adding, opposing, causing, or concluding? Then drop in a connector from that family, add the comma if it starts the sentence, and move on.
Vary your choices so you do not repeat one word, and keep the meaning smooth. Practise a passage or two every week, and these five marks will become some of the safest on your paper.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are sentence connectors?
Sentence connectors, also called linkers or transition words, are words or phrases that join ideas, sentences, or paragraphs and show the relationship between them, such as addition, contrast, cause, result, or sequence.
What is the main rule for using connectors?
First decide the relationship between the two ideas, then choose the connector that fits. If the second idea adds, use an addition connector; if it opposes, use a contrast connector; if it gives a reason, use a cause connector.
What is the difference between connectors and conjunctions?
Conjunctions (and, but, because) are one grammatical kind of connector. Connectors is the broader term and also includes transition words like however, therefore, and moreover. Their job is the same: to link ideas.
How do I answer “Complete the passage using suitable connectors”?
Read the whole passage first. For each blank, work out the relationship between the surrounding ideas, then choose a connector that fits, check the punctuation, and avoid repeating the same connector.
Do I put a comma after a connector?
After a transition word at the start of a sentence, yes: “However, he came.” Before a coordinating conjunction joining two clauses, yes: “He tried, but he failed.” After a subordinate clause that comes first, yes: “Although he tried, he failed.”
