Here is a little irony to begin with: the word ‘misspell’ is itself one of the most misspelled words in the whole language. If a word can trip you up while literally meaning “to spell wrongly”, you can see why spelling feels like a minefield to so many students. But please do not lose heart. Almost every spelling mistake falls on the same small group of words, and those words follow a few patterns you can actually learn.
In this lesson: Commonly Misspelled English Words, I will first give you the key spelling rules, and then a list of the words that students get wrong most often, each with a simple trick to lock its correct spelling into your memory for good.
Why English Spelling is So Tricky
Before we fix the problem, let me tell you why it exists, because that makes it less scary. English has borrowed words from Latin, French, Greek, and many other languages, each with its own spelling habits. On top of that, the way we say a word today often does not match the way it was spelled centuries ago.
That is why letters fall silent, and why the same sound can be written in several ways. Spelling is not a test of how clever you are; it is mostly a test of how many words you have seen often enough to remember.
Spelling in the Exam
Spelling is worth real marks. In the board exam, a couple of questions test it directly, and it also matters in the word-formation and correction items, where one wrong letter can cost you the mark. In admission and job exams, “choose the correctly spelled word” is a common MCQ. So a little effort here protects marks all across your paper.
The Spelling Rules You Must Know
English spelling rules are not perfect, but a few of them work often enough to be worth learning. Here are the ones that will help you most.
English বানানের নিয়ম সব সময় নিখুঁতভাবে কাজ করে না, তবে কিছু নিয়ম এত বেশি ক্ষেত্রে প্রযোজ্য যে সেগুলো শেখা অবশ্যই উপকারী। নিচে এমন নিয়মগুলো দেওয়া হলো, যেগুলো তোমাকে সবচেয়ে বেশি সাহায্য করবে।
Rule 1: I Before E, Except After C
The old rhyme says it best: “I before E, except after C.” So you write ‘believe’, ‘achieve’, and ‘field’ with ‘ie’, but ‘receive’, ‘ceiling’, and ‘deceive’ with ‘ei’ because a ‘c’ comes first. It works most of the time, though a few rebels like ‘weird’, ‘seize’, and ‘foreign’ break it, so simply learn those as exceptions.
পুরোনো ছড়াটি নিয়মটি খুব সহজভাবে মনে রাখতে সাহায্য করে: “I before E, except after C.” অর্থাৎ, সাধারণত ‘i’ আগে এবং ‘e’ পরে বসে, কিন্তু তার আগে ‘c’ থাকলে ‘ei’ হয়।
Examples:
- believe, achieve, field (i before e)
- receive, ceiling (e after c)
- weird, seize, foreign (exceptions)
Rule 2: Drop the Silent ‘e’ Before a Vowel Suffix
When a word ends in a silent ‘e’ and you add a suffix that starts with a vowel (-ing, -ed, -able), drop the ‘e’. So ‘ride’ becomes ‘riding’ and ‘use’ becomes ‘usable’. But keep the ‘e’ when the suffix starts with a consonant, as in ‘care’ plus ‘ful’ giving ‘careful’. Our Prefixes and Suffixes in English lesson goes deeper into this.
Examples:
- ride → riding, make → making, use → usable
- care → careful (keep the e)
Rule 3: Change ‘y’ to ‘i’ Before a Suffix
When a word ends in a consonant plus ‘y’, change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ before you add a suffix, except before ‘-ing’. So ‘happy’ becomes ‘happiness’ and ‘beauty’ becomes ‘beautiful’, but ‘carry’ keeps its ‘y’ in ‘carrying’. If a vowel comes before the ‘y’, keep it, as in ‘play’ giving ‘played’.
Examples:
- happy → happiness, beauty → beautiful, carry → carried
- carry → carrying (keep y before -ing)
Rule 4: Double the Final Consonant
When a short word ends in one vowel plus one consonant, and the last syllable is stressed, double that consonant before a vowel suffix. So ‘stop’ becomes ‘stopping’, ‘run’ becomes ‘running’, and ‘begin’ becomes ‘beginning’. This is why ‘occur’ becomes ‘occurred’ and ‘refer’ becomes ‘referred’.
Examples:
- stop → stopping, run → running, begin → beginning
- occur → occurred, refer → referred
Rule 5: Mind the Double Letters
A huge number of words are misspelled simply because a double letter is forgotten. ‘Accommodate’ has a double ‘c’ and a double ‘m’; ‘necessary’ has one ‘c’ and a double ‘s’; ‘committee’ has a double ‘m’, a double ‘t’, and a double ‘e’. There is no neat rule for these, so the best way is to learn each tricky one with a memory trick.
Examples:
- accommodate, necessary, committee, embarrass, occasion
Rule 6: Remember the Silent Letters
Some letters are written but never spoken, and that is exactly where mistakes sneak in. Think of the silent ‘k’ in ‘knowledge’, the silent ‘b’ in ‘doubt’, the silent ‘h’ in ‘honest’, and the hidden ‘n’ in ‘government’. When a word feels tricky, say it slowly in your head, letter by letter, to catch the silent ones.
Examples:
- knowledge, doubt, honest, government, Wednesday
Rule 7: Learn the Tricky Word Endings
English endings that sound the same are often spelled differently, and exams love to test them. Watch ‘-tion’ against ‘-sion’ (nation, decision), ‘-able’ against ‘-ible’ (comfortable, possible), and ‘-ent’ against ‘-ant’ (different, important). When you are unsure, picture the whole word in your mind, and if doubt remains, a dictionary settles it.
Examples:
- decision (-sion), possible (-ible), important (-ant)
Memory Tricks: The Fun Way to Remember
A memory trick, or mnemonic, is a little sentence or image that hides the hard part of a spelling inside something you cannot forget. “There is a rat in sepArate” fixes the tricky ‘a’. “Miss Pell never misspells” reminds you of the double ‘s’. These tricks feel silly, and that is exactly why they stick. Below, every hard word comes with one.
একটা মনে রাখার কৌশল বা mnemonic হলো এমন একটি ছোট বাক্য, শব্দখেলা বা মানসিক ছবি, যা কোনো কঠিন বানানের অংশকে এমন কিছুর সঙ্গে যুক্ত করে দেয়, যা সহজে ভোলা যায় না। যেমন, “There is a rat in sepArate” বাক্যটি ‘separate’ শব্দের কঠিন ‘a’ মনে রাখতে সাহায্য করে।

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not trust your ear alone, because English spelling often does not match the sound. Words like ‘government’ and ‘February’ have letters you barely say, so spell by the rule and the trick, not just by how the word sounds.
- Do not depend on autocorrect to save you. In the exam there is no phone to fix your spelling, so you must carry the correct forms in your own head. Practising by hand now is what makes them stay.
- Do not mix up words that sound the same but are spelled differently, like ‘principal’ and ‘principle’ or ‘stationary’ and ‘stationery’. These homophones are a favourite trap, so learn each pair by its meaning. Our lesson on confusing words covers them.
- Do not try to memorise the whole list in one night. Spelling sticks through repeated exposure, so learn a small group daily, keep a personal list of the ones you get wrong, and revise it every week.

A Tip for the Exam
There is no magic shortcut to spelling; there is only friendly, steady practice. Learn the seven rules first, because they cover a huge number of words at once. Then take the list a small group at a time, and always learn a hard word with its memory trick, not on its own.
Keep a little notebook of every word you misspell and revise it each week, and read a little English every day so your eyes get used to the correct forms. Do this, and those two or three spelling marks, plus the marks you save in correction and word-formation, will quietly add up in your favour.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most commonly misspelled words in English?
Some of the most commonly misspelled words are accommodate, necessary, separate, definitely, receive, government, embarrass, beginning, privilege, and occurred. Most spelling mistakes fall on this same small group of tricky words.
What is the “i before e” rule?
The rule says “I before E, except after C”, so you write believe and achieve with ‘ie’, but receive and ceiling with ‘ei’. A few words like weird, seize, and foreign are exceptions and must be learned separately.
How can I remember difficult spellings?
Use memory tricks (mnemonics), such as “there’s a rat in separate” or “necessary has one collar and two sleeves”. Break long words into parts, learn a small group each day, and keep a personal list of the ones you get wrong.
Why is English spelling so hard?
English has borrowed words from many languages, and pronunciation has changed over centuries while spelling stayed the same. This creates silent letters and words where the spelling does not match the sound.
Is spelling important for exams?
Yes. The board directly tests spelling in a few questions, and a wrong letter can also cost marks in word-formation and correction. In admission and job exams, “choose the correctly spelled word” is a common MCQ.
