What is an Article?

An article is a word placed before a noun to show whether we mean something general or something specific (noun এর আগে বসে সাধারণ না নির্দিষ্ট তা বোঝায়)। There are two kinds: the indefinite article (a, an) and the definite article (the).

Article হলো একটি শব্দ যা noun এর আগে বসে বোঝায় আমরা সাধারণ কিছু বলছি নাকি নির্দিষ্ট কিছু। এটি দুই প্রকার: indefinite article (a, an) এবং definite article (the)। Article আসলে determiner এর একটি অংশ।

  • a / an = any one, not specific (যেকোনো একটি): I saw a bird.
  • the = a particular one (নির্দিষ্ট একটি): I saw the bird you mentioned.

Articles are a type of determiner, and this lesson is part of our parts of speech series.

A or An? It Depends on Sound, Not Spelling

This is the first rule to master, because it catches so many students. Use a before a consonant sound, and an before a vowel sound. The key word is sound, not the letter itself.

এটাই প্রথম নিয়ম যা আয়ত্ত করতে হবে, কারণ এখানেই অনেকে ভুল করে। ব্যঞ্জনধ্বনির আগে a, আর স্বরধ্বনির আগে an বসে। মূল কথা হলো ধ্বনি (sound), অক্ষর নয়।

Use ‘an’ before a vowel sound, even when the word starts with a consonant letter (স্বরধ্বনি থাকলে an)।

Examples:

  • an hour, an honest man, an heir (the ‘h’ is silent)
  • an MP, an MA, an X-ray (the letters begin with a vowel sound)

Use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, even when the word starts with a vowel letter (ব্যঞ্জনধ্বনি থাকলে a)।

Examples:

  • a university, a European, a union (they begin with a “yu” sound)
  • a one-taka note, a useful book (they begin with a “w” or “yu” sound)

A Tip for the Exam

The HSC articles item is a gap-fill, so read the whole sentence before you choose. Ask three quick questions in order: is the noun specific (then ‘the’), is it a first-mentioned singular countable noun (then a/an by sound), or is it a general plural, uncountable, or proper noun (then no article)? Train your ear on the a/an sound rule, because “an hour” and “a university” are the traps examiners love most. Answer in that order, and articles become easy marks.

HSC এর article item একটি gap-fill, তাই বাছার আগে পুরো বাক্যটি পড়ো। ক্রম অনুযায়ী তিনটি দ্রুত প্রশ্ন করো: noun টি কি নির্দিষ্ট (তাহলে ‘the’), এটি কি প্রথমবার উল্লেখ করা singular countable noun (তাহলে ধ্বনি অনুযায়ী a/an), নাকি এটি সাধারণ plural, uncountable বা proper noun (তাহলে কোনো article নয়)? a/an এর sound নিয়ম নিয়ে কান তৈরি করো, কারণ “an hour” আর “a university” ই পরীক্ষকের সবচেয়ে প্রিয় ফাঁদ। এই ক্রমে উত্তর দাও, তাহলে article সহজ নম্বরে পরিণত হবে।

Frequently Asked Questions

What are articles in English grammar?

Articles are the words a, an, and the, placed before a noun to show whether we mean something general (a, an) or something specific (the).

When do I use ‘a’ and when ‘an’?

Use ‘a’ before a consonant sound and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. It depends on sound, not spelling, so it is “a university” but “an hour”.

When do I use ‘the’?

Use ‘the’ before a specific noun, things that are one of a kind (the sun), superlatives (the best), rivers and seas (the Padma), and holy books (the Quran).

When is no article used?

Use no article before proper nouns, before plural or uncountable nouns in a general sense, and before meals, languages, and games, as in “We play football”.

Why is it ‘an hour’ but ‘a university’?

Because ‘hour’ begins with a vowel sound (the ‘h’ is silent) and ‘university’ begins with a consonant “yu” sound. The rule follows the sound, not the first letter.
