Good news to start with: gender in English is far simpler than in many languages. In French or Arabic, even a table or a book is treated as male or female, and you must memorise which is which. English does not do that. Here, gender mostly follows real sex, male, female, or neither. But it still has its own rules that exams love, especially forming feminine words like “actor” to “actress”, and the poetic gender of things like the sun and the moon. This lesson: ‘Gender in English Grammar’ covers all of it, from SSC up to admission and job level.
What is Gender?
Gender is the form of a noun or pronoun that shows whether it is male, female, both, or neither (noun বা pronoun টি পুরুষ, স্ত্রী, উভয়, নাকি কোনোটিই নয় তা বোঝায়)।
Gender হলো একটি noun বা pronoun এর এমন রূপ যা দেখায় সেটি পুরুষ, স্ত্রী, উভয়, নাকি কোনোটিই নয়। ইংরেজিতে gender চার প্রকার।
This lesson connects with our lessons on the noun and the pronoun.
The Four Genders
There are four genders in English. Read this table, then see each one below.
ইংরেজিতে চারটি gender আছে। টেবিলটি পড়ো, তারপর নিচে প্রতিটি দেখো।
| Gender | Meaning (অর্থ) | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine (পুংলিঙ্গ) | A male being (পুরুষ) | man, boy, king, lion |
| Feminine (স্ত্রীলিঙ্গ) | A female being (স্ত্রী) | woman, girl, queen, lioness |
| Common (উভয় লিঙ্গ) | Either male or female (পুরুষ বা স্ত্রী উভয়) | child, teacher, friend, baby |
| Neuter (ক্লীবলিঙ্গ) | A lifeless thing, no sex (জড় বস্তু) | book, table, stone, tree |
Examples:
- Masculine: The king rode on his horse.
- Feminine: The queen waved to the crowd.
- Common: Every student must work hard.
- Neuter: The table is made of wood.
How to Form the Feminine from the Masculine
This is the most tested part of the topic. There are three main ways to make a feminine word from a masculine one. Learn all three.
এটাই এই topic এর সবচেয়ে বেশি পরীক্ষিত অংশ। একটি পুংলিঙ্গ শব্দ থেকে স্ত্রীলিঙ্গ শব্দ তৈরির তিনটি প্রধান উপায় আছে। তিনটিই শেখো।
Rule 1: Add ‘-ess’ to the masculine word, sometimes dropping a vowel.
পুংলিঙ্গ শব্দের সাথে ‘-ess’ যোগ করা হয়, কখনো কখনো একটি স্বরবর্ণ বাদ দিয়ে।
| Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|
| author | authoress |
| poet | poetess |
| host | hostess |
| lion | lioness |
| prince | princess |
| actor | actress |
| tiger | tigress |
| waiter | waitress |
| master | mistress |
| hunter | huntress |
| emperor | empress |
| duke | duchess |
Rule 2: Use a completely different word for the feminine.
স্ত্রীলিঙ্গের জন্য সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন একটি শব্দ ব্যবহার করা হয়।
| Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|
| boy | girl |
| man | woman |
| king | queen |
| father | mother |
| uncle | aunt |
| nephew | niece |
| husband | wife |
| bull | cow |
| cock | hen |
| horse | mare |
| dog | bitch |
| gander | goose |
| wizard | witch |
| monk | nun |
Rule 3: Add a word to make a compound, for the masculine and the feminine.
পুংলিঙ্গ ও স্ত্রীলিঙ্গের জন্য একটি শব্দ যোগ করে যৌগিক (compound) শব্দ তৈরি করা হয়।
| Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|
| grandfather | grandmother |
| landlord | landlady |
| peacock | peahen |
| he-goat | she-goat |
| milkman | milkmaid |
| washerman | washerwoman |
| step-son | step-daughter |
| man-servant | maid-servant |
A note on foreign feminines. A few words keep an old foreign feminine form (কিছু শব্দ পুরনো বিদেশি স্ত্রীবাচক রূপ রাখে)।
Examples:
- hero → heroine
- sultan → sultana
- czar → czarina
- executor → executrix
Common Gender and the Pronoun Question
A common gender noun can be male or female, so we do not always know which pronoun to use. Traditionally, ‘he’ was used for a person of unknown sex, but that now sounds dated and one-sided. Modern English prefers ‘he or she’, or the singular ‘they’.
Common gender এর noun পুরুষ বা স্ত্রী দুটোই হতে পারে, তাই কোন pronoun ব্যবহার করব তা সবসময় জানা থাকে না। আগে অজানা লিঙ্গের জন্য ‘he’ ব্যবহার করা হতো, কিন্তু এখন তা পুরনো ও একপেশে শোনায়। আধুনিক ইংরেজি ‘he or she’, অথবা singular ‘they’ পছন্দ করে।
Examples:
- Every student should do his or her duty. (traditional and correct)
- Every student should do their duty. (modern and widely accepted)
Personification: Gender in Poetry
Here is a favourite of HSC and admission exams. In literature, lifeless things and ideas are sometimes treated as male or female. This is called personification.
এখানে HSC ও admission পরীক্ষার একটি প্রিয় বিষয়। সাহিত্যে জড় বস্তু ও ভাবকে কখনো পুরুষ বা স্ত্রী হিসেবে দেখানো হয়। একে personification বলা হয়।
Things suggesting strength, power, or violence are treated as masculine (শক্তি বা প্রচণ্ডতা বোঝালে masculine): the sun, summer, winter, time, death, war, anger, thunder.
Things suggesting beauty, gentleness, or grace are treated as feminine (সৌন্দর্য বা কোমলতা বোঝালে feminine): the moon, the earth, spring, nature, peace, hope, mercy, liberty, a ship, a country.
Examples:
- The sun spread his golden rays over the hills.
- The moon hid her face behind a cloud.
- The ship struck a rock and she sank slowly.
- Our country expects every citizen to do her duty.

A Tip for the Exam
Most gender questions simply ask for the feminine or masculine of a word, so the three formation rules (add -ess, a different word, or a compound) will carry you through. Keep a short list of the tricky pairs, like nephew to niece and gander to goose, because those are the ones examiners choose. And remember the two personification groups: strong, fierce things are masculine (the sun, death, war), while gentle, beautiful things are feminine (the moon, spring, a ship). Those few patterns cover almost every question you will meet.
