What is an Interjection?

An interjection is a word or short phrase that expresses a sudden or strong feeling, such as joy, sorrow, surprise, or pain (হঠাৎ বা তীব্র অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করে)। It usually stands on its own and is followed by an exclamation mark.

Examples:

  • Hurrah! Our team has won.
  • Alas! The old man is no more.
  • Wow! What a wonderful surprise.
  • Ouch! That needle hurt me.

Types of Interjection (by Feeling)

Interjections are grouped by the feeling they express. Read this table, then note the examples below it.

Interjection কে ভাগ করা হয় তারা যে অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করে তার উপর ভিত্তি করে। টেবিলটি পড়ো, তারপর নিচের উদাহরণগুলো দেখো।

FeelingCommon interjectionsExample
Joy (আনন্দ)Hurrah!, Hurray!, Wow!Hurrah! We passed.
Sorrow (দুঃখ)Alas!, Ah!Alas! She has lost everything.
Surprise (বিস্ময়)What!, Oh!, Hey!What! Is he really gone?
Praise (প্রশংসা)Bravo!, Well done!Bravo! You played superbly.
Pain (ব্যথা)Ouch!, Ah!Ouch! I cut my finger.
Attention (মনোযোগ)Hello!, Hey!, Listen!Hey! Watch out.
Disgust (ঘৃণা)Ugh!, Fie!Ugh! What a smell.
Relief (স্বস্তি)Phew!, Thank God!Phew! We are finally safe.

The Punctuation of Interjections

How you punctuate an interjection depends on how strong the feeling is (অনুভূতি কতটা তীব্র তার উপর নির্ভর করে)।

একটি interjection এ কী punctuation বসবে তা নির্ভর করে অনুভূতিটি কতটা তীব্র তার উপর।

Examples:

  • Strong feeling, use an exclamation mark: Hurrah! We won the trophy.
  • Mild feeling, a comma is enough: Well, I am not so sure about that.
  • Some interjections carry the whole feeling alone: Ouch!

Important Rules of Interjections

These rules are simple, but exams test them, so learn them carefully.

এই নিয়মগুলো সহজ, তবে পরীক্ষায় আসে, তাই মন দিয়ে শেখো।

Rule 1: An interjection is usually followed by an exclamation mark when the feeling is strong.

অনুভূতি তীব্র হলে interjection এর পরে সাধারণত একটি বিস্ময়সূচক চিহ্ন (!) বসে।

Examples:

  • Alas! He failed again.
  • Bravo! Well done, my boy.

Rule 2: An interjection has no grammatical relation to the rest of the sentence. You can remove it, and the sentence still stands.

Interjection বাক্যের বাকি অংশের সাথে ব্যাকরণগতভাবে যুক্ত নয়। তুমি এটি সরিয়ে ফেললেও বাক্যটি ঠিক থাকে।

Examples:

  • Oh! I forgot my keys. (“I forgot my keys” is still a full sentence.)

Rule 3: An interjection usually begins the sentence, and its first letter is capitalised.

Interjection সাধারণত বাক্যের শুরুতে বসে এবং এর প্রথম অক্ষর বড় হাতের হয়।

Examples:

  • Hush! The baby is sleeping.

Rule 4: Choose the interjection that matches the exact feeling. This is the most common exam question.

সঠিক অনুভূতির সাথে মেলে এমন interjection বেছে নাও। এটিই পরীক্ষায় সবচেয়ে বেশি আসা প্রশ্ন।

Examples:

  • For joy: Hurrah! For sorrow: Alas! For praise: Bravo!

Rule 5: Use ‘O’ before a noun when calling or addressing someone; use ‘Oh’ to express an emotion.

কাউকে ডাকার সময় noun এর আগে ‘O’ বসে; আর কোনো অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করতে ‘Oh’ বসে।

Examples:

  • O Allah, help us. (addressing)
  • Oh, what a relief that is! (emotion)

Interjections and Exclamatory Sentences

Do not confuse an interjection with a full exclamatory sentence (interjection আর exclamatory sentence এক নয়)। An interjection is a single exclaiming word, while an exclamatory sentence often begins with ‘What’ or ‘How’. To understand, exclamatory sentence, you can read this lesson: Kinds of Sentences in English

একটি interjection কে একটি সম্পূর্ণ exclamatory sentence এর সাথে গুলিয়ে ফেলো না। Interjection হলো একটিমাত্র আবেগসূচক শব্দ, আর exclamatory sentence প্রায়ই ‘What’ বা ‘How’ দিয়ে শুরু হয়।

Examples:

  • Interjection: Wow! The garden is beautiful.
  • Exclamatory sentence: What a beautiful garden it is!

To learn how these exclamations are formed, study our lesson on Assertive to Exclamatory Sentence Transformation.

How to Identify an Interjection (Quick Trick)

Here is a fast test. If a word suddenly expresses a feeling and can be removed without breaking the rest of the sentence, it is an interjection. Ask yourself two things: “Does it show emotion?” and “Is it standing apart from the grammar of the sentence?” If both answers are yes, it is an interjection.

Practice Exercise with Answers

Answers

Part A:

  1. Alas! = Sorrow
  2. Hurrah! = Joy
  3. Ouch! = Pain

Part B: 4. Wow (surprise or admiration) 5. Hush (calling for silence) 6. Bravo (praise) 7. Well (a mild interjection, so a comma follows)

A Tip for the Exam

Almost every interjection question is really a matching question: it gives you a feeling and asks for the right word, or gives you a word and asks for the feeling. So do not just memorise a list of interjections; memorise each one with its feeling attached, joy with Hurrah, sorrow with Alas, praise with Bravo, pain with Ouch. Learn them as pairs, and you will never lose a mark here.
