“She sang.” True, but flat. “She sang beautifully on the stage last night.” Now you know how she sang, where, and when. Those three extra pieces of information are all adverbs, and that is the job of an adverb: it adds detail to the action, telling us how, when, where, or how much something happens.
“She sang।” ঠিকই, কিন্তু একেবারে নীরস। “She sang beautifully on the stage last night।” এবার তুমি জানলে সে কীভাবে গাইল, কোথায় গাইল, আর কখন গাইল। এই তিনটি বাড়তি তথ্যই একেকটি adverb, আর adverb এর কাজটাই হলো এটি: এটি কাজের সাথে বাড়তি তথ্য যোগ করে, বলে দেয় কাজটি কীভাবে, কখন, কোথায় বা কতটা ঘটল।
Adverbs look easy, but exams build some clever traps around them, especially the position of adverbs and the confusion between adjectives and adverbs. So in this lesson we will cover everything, from the basic types you need for J.S.C and S.S.C, up to the position, comparison, and usage rules that come in H.S.C, admission, and job exams. This lesson pairs closely with our adjective lesson.
What is an Adverb?
An adverb is a word that adds meaning to a verb, an adjective, or another adverb (একটি verb, adjective বা আরেকটি adverb এর সাথে বাড়তি অর্থ যোগ করে)। It usually answers “how?”, “when?”, “where?”, “how often?”, or “how much?”.

- She is quite sure about it.
- He is very tired today.

6. Adverb of Affirmation and Negation

- Why did he leave early?
- How did you solve it?
How Adverbs Are Formed
Most adverbs of manner are made by adding -ly to an adjective (adjective + ly)। For example, quick becomes quickly, and careful becomes carefully. Watch the spelling: happy becomes happily, true becomes truly, and gentle becomes gently.
বেশিরভাগ adverb of manner তৈরি হয় একটি adjective এর সাথে -ly যোগ করে। যেমন quick থেকে quickly, careful থেকে carefully। বানানের দিকে খেয়াল রাখো: happy থেকে happily, true থেকে truly, gentle থেকে gently।
A common trap: not every word ending in -ly is an adverb. Words like friendly, lovely, lonely, and silly are adjectives, not adverbs (এগুলো adjective, adverb নয়)।
একটি সাধারণ ফাঁদ: -ly দিয়ে শেষ হওয়া সব শব্দই adverb নয়। friendly, lovely, lonely, silly এর মতো শব্দগুলো আসলে adjective, adverb নয়। তাই শুধু -ly দেখে adverb ভেবো না।
The Position of Adverbs
Where you place an adverb matters, and exams test this often. Here are the main rules.
একটি adverb কোথায় বসবে তা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, আর পরীক্ষায় এটি প্রায়ই আসে। প্রধান নিয়মগুলো নিচে দেওয়া হলো।
Rule 1: An adverb of manner usually comes after the verb, or after the object if there is one (verb বা object এর পরে)।
- She sang sweetly.
- He read the letter carefully.
Rule 2: An adverb of frequency comes before the main verb, but after the verb ‘be’ (main verb এর আগে, কিন্তু ‘be’ এর পরে)।
- He always comes late.
- She is always honest.
Rule 3: When manner, place, and time come together, the order is manner, then place, then time (ক্রম: manner, place, time)।
- She sang beautifully (manner) at the hall (place) last night (time).
Rule 4: The adverb ‘enough’ always comes after the word it modifies (যে শব্দকে বর্ণনা করে তার পরে বসে)।
- He is old enough to vote. (not “enough old”)
- She did not run fast enough.
Degrees of Comparison of Adverbs
Like adjectives, many adverbs have three degrees of comparison (তিনটি degree)। Short adverbs add -er and -est, while adverbs ending in -ly take more and most.
Adjective এর মতোই অনেক adverb এর তিনটি degree থাকে। ছোট adverb এ -er ও -est যোগ হয়, আর -ly দিয়ে শেষ হওয়া adverb এ more ও most বসে।
- Positive: Rana runs fast.
- Comparative: Rana runs faster than Sohel.
- Superlative: Rana runs the fastest of all.
For the -ly type: carefully, more carefully, most carefully. Some are irregular, like well, better, best. To master this fully, study our lesson on Changing the Degree.
Important Usage Rules for the Exam
These are the points admission and job exams test again and again. Learn them carefully, because this is where the marks are decided.
এই পয়েন্টগুলোই admission ও job পরীক্ষায় বারবার আসে। মন দিয়ে শেখো, কারণ এখান থেকেই নম্বর ঠিক হয়।
Rule 1: Do not confuse an adjective with an adverb. ‘Good’ is an adjective; ‘well’ is an adverb (good = adjective, well = adverb)।
- She is a good dancer. She dances well.
Rule 2: Some words change meaning completely with -ly. Learn these pairs (অর্থ বদলে যায়)।
- hard = with effort (He works hard.) / hardly = almost not (He hardly works.)
- late = not on time (He came late.) / lately = recently (I have not seen him lately.)
- near = close (Come near.) / nearly = almost (I nearly fell.)
Rule 3: ‘Too’ and ‘very’ are not the same. ‘Too’ carries a negative sense of excess (too = খারাপ অর্থে অতিরিক্ত)।
- Correct: The bag is too heavy to carry. (a problem)
- Correct: The bag is very heavy, but I can carry it.
Rule 4: Never use a double negative in one clause (এক clause এ দুটি negative ভুল)।
- Correct: I do not know anything. (not “I do not know nothing”)
Rule 5: When a sentence begins with a negative adverb (never, hardly, seldom, scarcely, rarely), the word order is inverted (বাক্যের শুরুতে negative adverb থাকলে inversion হয়)।
- Hardly had I reached the station when the train left.
- Never have I seen such a sight.
Rule 6: ‘Fast’ is both an adjective and an adverb; there is no word “fastly” (‘fastly’ বলে কোনো শব্দ নেই)।
- Correct: He runs fast. (not “fastly”)
How to Identify an Adverb (Quick Trick)
Here is a fast test. If a word tells you how, when, where, how often, or how much about a verb, it is an adverb. Another clue: most (but not all) adverbs of manner end in -ly, and you can usually move an adverb to a different place in the sentence without breaking it.
দ্রুত পরীক্ষা: কোনো শব্দ যদি একটি verb সম্পর্কে কীভাবে, কখন, কোথায়, কতবার বা কতটা বলে, তাহলে সেটি adverb। আরেকটি সংকেত: বেশিরভাগ (তবে সব নয়) adverb of manner -ly দিয়ে শেষ হয়, আর একটি adverb কে সাধারণত বাক্যের অন্য জায়গায় সরানো যায় বাক্য না ভেঙেই।
Practice Exercise with Answers
Part A: Name the type of the bold adverb. Part B: Correct the error in each sentence.
নিজে চেষ্টা করার পরে নিচের উত্তরগুলো মিলিয়ে নাও।
Part A:
- He speaks fluently.
- She will come soon.
- They searched everywhere.
- I often visit my grandmother.
Part B: 5. He runs very fastly. 6. The soup is very hot to eat, so throw it away. 7. She sings good. 8. I do not want nothing from you.
Answers
Part A:
- fluently = Adverb of Manner
- soon = Adverb of Time
- everywhere = Adverb of Place
- often = Adverb of Frequency
Part B: 5. He runs very fast. (there is no word “fastly”) 6. The soup is too hot to eat, so throw it away. (‘too’ for a negative excess) 7. She sings well. (‘well’ is the adverb, not ‘good’) 8. I do not want anything from you. (no double negative)
A Tip for the Exam
The easy adverb questions ask you to name a type. The hard ones test usage, and that is where your marks are won: good versus well, hard versus hardly, too versus very, and the inversion after negative adverbs. When you meet an adverb question, first check whether it is really testing an adjective-adverb mix-up, because that is the most common trap of all. Spot the trap, apply the rule, and the mark is yours.
