Pronoun: Types, Rules, and Examples (incl. Unclear Pronoun)

Learn the pronoun definition, all types of pronouns with rules and examples, and how to fix an unclear pronoun for the HSC grammar item. With Bengali explanations for SSC and HSC.

Today, we are going to discuss the pronoun: what it is, its types, the rules for using it correctly, and the unclear pronoun problem that appears in the H.S.C exam. A pronoun is one of the most useful of the parts of speech, because it saves us from repeating the same noun again and again. Without pronouns, we would have to write “Rahim took Rahim’s book and Rahim went to Rahim’s school”, which sounds terrible. With pronouns, it becomes “Rahim took his book and went to his school”.

This lesson gives you the definition, every type of pronoun with rules and examples, and a full section on the unclear pronoun, which is exactly what the pronoun question tests in H.S.C and other exams like S.S.C and university admission.

আজকে আমরা আলোচনা করব Pronoun নিয়ে, অর্থাৎ pronoun কী, এর কয়টি প্রকার আছে, সঠিকভাবে ব্যবহারের নিয়ম কী, আর H.S.C পরীক্ষায় আসা unclear pronoun এর সমস্যাটি কীভাবে সমাধান করতে হয়। Pronoun আমাদের একই noun বারবার বলার হাত থেকে বাঁচায়। মনে করো, pronoun না থাকলে আমাদের লিখতে হতো “Rahim took Rahim’s book and Rahim went to Rahim’s school”, যা শুনতে খুবই দৃষ্টিকটু। কিন্তু pronoun ব্যবহার করলে এটি সহজেই হয়ে যায় “Rahim took his book and went to his school”। আমি আশা করছি, এই পাঠটি পড়ার পরে pronoun নিয়ে তোমার সব প্রশ্নের উত্তর পেয়ে যাবে। তাহলে চলো, শুরু করা যাক।

What is a Pronoun?

A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun, so that we do not have to repeat the noun again and again. The noun that a pronoun stands for or refers to is called its antecedent. Remember this word ‘antecedent’, because it is the key to the unclear pronoun section later.

Pronoun হলো এমন একটি শব্দ যা noun এর পরিবর্তে বসে, যাতে একই noun বারবার বলতে না হয়। যে noun টির পরিবর্তে pronoun বসে বা যাকে pronoun নির্দেশ করে, তাকে বলা হয় antecedent। এই ‘antecedent’ শব্দটি এখনই মনে রাখো, কারণ পরে unclear pronoun অংশে এটিই হবে মূল চাবিকাঠি।

For Example:

  • Rahim is a good boy.
  • He studies hard. (Here, He is the pronoun, and Rahim is its antecedent.)

Types of Pronoun at a Glance

There are several kinds of pronoun. This table shows the main ones together. Study each in detail below.

Pronoun এর কয়েকটি প্রকার আছে। নিচের টেবিলে প্রধান প্রকারগুলো একসাথে দেওয়া হলো, আর প্রতিটি নিচে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করা হয়েছে।

Personal Pronoun

A personal pronoun stands for a particular person or thing. Personal pronouns change their form according to person (first, second, third), number (singular, plural), and case (subject or object).

Personal pronoun কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর পরিবর্তে বসে। এটি person (first, second, third), number (singular, plural) এবং case (subject না object) অনুযায়ী তার রূপ পরিবর্তন করে। যেমন ‘I’ হলো first person subject, আর কাজটি তার উপর পড়লে সেটি হয়ে যায় ‘me’ (object form)।

For Example: I, we, you, he, she, it, they (subject forms); me, us, him, her, them (object forms).

Example sentence: She gave him a pen. (She = subject, him = object)

Possessive Pronoun

A possessive pronoun shows that something belongs to someone. Here you must be careful about one common confusion. A possessive pronoun (mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs) stands alone and replaces the noun. A possessive adjective (my, your, his, her, our, their) sits before a noun.

Possessive pronoun দিয়ে বোঝানো হয় কোনো কিছু কার। এখানে একটি সাধারণ ভুল নিয়ে সতর্ক থাকতে হবে। Possessive pronoun (mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs) একা বসে এবং noun এর জায়গা নেয়। কিন্তু possessive adjective (my, your, his, her, our, their) সবসময় একটি noun এর আগে বসে। পার্থক্যটা উদাহরণ দিয়ে দেখো: “This book is mine” এখানে mine একা বসেছে, তাই pronoun; আর “This is my book” এখানে my শব্দটি book এর আগে বসেছে, তাই adjective।

For Example: mine, ours, yours, his, hers, theirs.

Reflexive Pronoun

A reflexive pronoun is used when the subject and the object of a sentence are the same person or thing. It ends in ‘self’ (singular) or ‘selves’ (plural).

For Example: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.

Demonstrative Pronoun

A demonstrative pronoun points to a specific person or thing. It shows whether the thing is near or far, and whether it is singular or plural.

Demonstrative pronoun কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে নির্দেশ করে। এটি বুঝিয়ে দেয় জিনিসটি কাছে না দূরে, এবং একবচন না বহুবচন। কাছের জন্য this (একবচন) ও these (বহুবচন), আর দূরের জন্য that (একবচন) ও those (বহুবচন) ব্যবহার হয়।

For Example: this, that, these, those.

Example sentence: This is my bag, and those are yours.

Interrogative Pronoun

An interrogative pronoun is used to ask a question. It always sits at or near the beginning of the question.

Interrogative pronoun প্রশ্ন করার জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং সাধারণত প্রশ্নের শুরুতে বসে। মনে রাখবে, ‘who’ ব্যক্তির জন্য (subject), ‘whom’ ব্যক্তির জন্য (object), ‘whose’ মালিকানার জন্য, আর ‘which’ ও ‘what’ বস্তু বা পছন্দের জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয়।

For Example: who, whom, whose, which, what.

Example sentence:

  • Who is calling you?
  • Whose book is this?

Relative Pronoun

A relative pronoun joins a clause to a noun that comes before it, and refers back to that noun. This is very useful when you make complex sentences.

Relative pronoun একটি clause কে তার আগের noun এর সাথে যুক্ত করে এবং ওই noun কেই নির্দেশ করে। Complex sentence তৈরি করার সময় এটি খুব কাজে লাগে। যেমন “The boy who came here is my friend” বাক্যে who শব্দটি ‘the boy’ কে নির্দেশ করছে এবং দুটি অংশকে জুড়ে দিচ্ছে। মনে রাখবে, ব্যক্তির জন্য who/whom, বস্তুর জন্য which, আর দুটোর জন্যই that ব্যবহার করা যায়।

For Example: who, whom, whose, which, that.

Indefinite Pronoun

An indefinite pronoun refers to a person or thing in a general way, not to any particular one.

Indefinite pronoun কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে সাধারণভাবে বোঝায়, নির্দিষ্ট কাউকে নয়। যেমন someone মানে “কেউ একজন”, কিন্তু কে তা নির্দিষ্ট নয়। এখানে একটি নিয়ম মনে রাখবে: everyone, someone, nobody, each এর মতো শব্দগুলো singular, তাই এদের সাথে singular verb বসে।

For Example: someone, anyone, everyone, nobody, none, all, some, few, many.

Example sentence: Everyone has finished the work. (singular verb)

Distributive Pronoun

A distributive pronoun refers to persons or things one at a time. Because it takes them singly, it always takes a singular verb.

Distributive pronoun ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে একটি একটি করে আলাদাভাবে বোঝায়। যেহেতু এটি একটি করে ধরে, তাই এর সাথে সবসময় singular verb বসে। যেমন “Each of the boys was present” এখানে each একটি করে ছেলেকে বোঝাচ্ছে, তাই verb singular।

For Example: each, either, neither.

Reciprocal Pronoun

A reciprocal pronoun shows a mutual action or relationship between two or more people. Use ‘each other’ for two, and ‘one another’ for more than two.

Reciprocal pronoun দুই বা ততোধিক ব্যক্তির মধ্যে পারস্পরিক কাজ বা সম্পর্ক বোঝায়। দুজনের ক্ষেত্রে ‘each other’ আর দুইয়ের অধিক হলে ‘one another’ ব্যবহার করবে।

For Example: each other, one another.

Example sentence: The two friends helped each other.

Unclear Pronoun (Important for the HSC Exam)

Now we come to the part that carries marks in the H.S.C exam. An unclear pronoun is a pronoun whose antecedent is missing or confusing, so the reader cannot be sure which noun it points to. Since a pronoun’s whole job is to stand for a noun, a pronoun that could point to two different nouns creates confusion.

See the problem:

Unclear: Rahim told Karim that he had won the prize. (Who won, Rahim or Karim? The pronoun ‘he’ is unclear.)

How to fix it:

  • Clear: Rahim told Karim, “I have won the prize.”
  • Or: Rahim told Karim that Rahim had won the prize.

Three rules to keep your pronouns clear:

  1. Every pronoun must have one clear antecedent. If a reader cannot tell which noun it replaces, rewrite the sentence.
  2. A pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number, person, and gender. A singular noun takes a singular pronoun, a female noun takes ‘she’ or ‘her’, and so on.
  3. Keep the pronoun close to its antecedent, so the connection is obvious.

Pronoun পরিষ্কার রাখার ৩টি নিয়ম:

১. প্রতিটি pronoun এর একটি স্পষ্ট antecedent থাকতে হবে। পাঠক যদি বুঝতে না পারে এটি কোন noun এর পরিবর্তে বসেছে, তাহলে বাক্যটি নতুন করে লিখতে হবে। ২. pronoun কে তার antecedent এর সাথে number, person এবং gender এ মিল রাখতে হবে। singular noun এর জন্য singular pronoun, আর স্ত্রীবাচক noun এর জন্য she/her বসবে। ৩. pronoun কে তার antecedent এর কাছাকাছি রাখো, যাতে সম্পর্কটি স্পষ্ট বোঝা যায়।

How the exam question looks. In the H.S.C pronoun item, you are usually given a passage with gaps, and you have to fill each gap with the correct pronoun by looking at its antecedent. Read the noun before the gap, check its number, person, and gender, then choose the pronoun that matches.

H.S.C এর pronoun অংশে সাধারণত একটি passage দেওয়া থাকে যেখানে কিছু gap থাকে, আর তোমাকে antecedent দেখে প্রতিটি gap এ সঠিক pronoun বসাতে হয়। gap এর আগের noun টি পড়ো, তার number, person এবং gender দেখো, তারপর মিল রেখে সঠিক pronoun বসাও।

Practice Exercise with Answers

Part A: Name the type of pronoun for each bold word. Part B: Fill in the gap with a suitable pronoun.

নিজে চেষ্টা করার পরে নিচের উত্তরগুলো মিলিয়ে নাও।

Part A:

  1. This is a beautiful flower.
  2. The boy hurt himself while playing.
  3. Who broke the glass?
  4. The pen is mine.
  5. Each of the students was rewarded.

Part B:

6. Sadia is a good girl. ______ helps everyone.

7. The students did the work ______ (themselves / itself).

8. Rahim and Karim love ______ (each other / one another).

Answers

Part A:

  1. This = Demonstrative Pronoun
  2. himself = Reflexive Pronoun
  3. Who = Interrogative Pronoun
  4. mine = Possessive Pronoun
  5. Each = Distributive Pronoun

Part B:

6. She (matches the antecedent ‘Sadia’: singular, female)

7. themselves (the antecedent ‘students’ is plural)

8. each other (only two people, Rahim and Karim)

A Tip for the Exam

The pronoun question is not about memorising a list. It is about matching. In every gap, find the antecedent first, then make the pronoun agree with it in number, person, and gender. If a sentence has two possible antecedents, that is your signal to rewrite it so the meaning is clear. Do that, and you will not lose a single mark here.
