Imagine you step out of a bus in a new city, your phone is dead, and you have to reach a place you have never seen. What do you do? You walk up to a stranger and ask the way. Asking and giving directions in English is one of the most useful real life skills you can carry, and it shows up again and again in your SSC and HSC dialogue writing, in university admission spoken tests, and in the fill in the gaps and dialogue completion questions of job exams.
In this lesson: Asking and Giving Directions in English, I will teach you the exact words, phrases, and simple rules you need, step by step, the way I would explain it standing right beside you in class.
SSC ও HSC-এর dialogue writing, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ভর্তি পরীক্ষার মৌখিক অংশ এবং চাকরির পরীক্ষার fill in the gaps ও dialogue completion-এর প্রশ্নেও এই বিষয়টি বারবার আসে। এই পাঠে আমি তোমাকে ধাপে ধাপে প্রয়োজনীয় word, phrase এবং সহজ নিয়মগুলো শেখাব, ঠিক যেভাবে শ্রেণিকক্ষে তোমার পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে বুঝিয়ে দিতাম।
Before we begin, two of our spoken English lessons pair perfectly with this one: How to Introduce Yourself and Others in English and Asking Questions about Something in Formal English. Read them alongside this lesson to build a full set of everyday speaking skills.
শুরু করার আগে বলে রাখি, আমাদের Spoken English-এর আরও দুটি পাঠ এই বিষয়টির সঙ্গে খুব ভালোভাবে সম্পর্কিত: How to Introduce Yourself এবং Asking Questions about Something। দৈনন্দিন কথাবলার পূর্ণ দক্ষতা গড়ে তুলতে এই পাঠটির পাশাপাশি ওই দুটি পাঠও পড়ে নিতে পারো।
What Does “Asking and Giving Directions” Mean?
Asking for directions means requesting help to find the way to a place you do not know. Giving directions means guiding another person to that place using clear, simple instructions. In English, we ask with polite questions (interrogative sentences) and we give with short commands (imperative sentences) supported by prepositions of place.
Think of it as a small two part game. One person does not know the way and asks. The other person knows the way and tells. Your only job is to make each part clear and polite. You do not need long, fancy sentences. Two or three short lines can guide a person across a whole city.
Structure to remember:
- Asking = polite opener + question.
- Giving = imperative + preposition of place + landmark.

Vocabulary Chart 3: Landmarks and Places on the Road
A landmark is a thing that is easy to notice, and it is a gift when you give directions. Point to a landmark and the other person feels safe.
Landmark হলো এমন কোনো পরিচিত বা সহজে চোখে পড়ে এমন জায়গা বা বস্তু, যা পথ চিনতে সাহায্য করে। পথনির্দেশ দেওয়ার সময় landmark উল্লেখ করলে অন্য ব্যক্তি সহজে দিক বুঝতে পারে এবং আরও নিশ্চিন্তভাবে এগোতে পারে।
| Word / Phrase | অর্থ (Bengali) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| crossroads / intersection | চৌরাস্তা | Stop at the crossroads and look right. |
| roundabout | গোলচত্বর | At the roundabout, take the second exit. |
| traffic lights / signal | ট্রাফিক সিগন্যাল | Turn left at the traffic lights. |
| junction / T-junction | সংযোগস্থল, টি-মোড় | The road ends at a T-junction. |

Vocabulary Chart 4: The Compass Directions
Job exams and admission tests sometimes ask the main and in between directions. Learn all eight.
চাকরি ও ভর্তি পরীক্ষায় কখনো কখনো প্রধান দিক এবং মধ্যবর্তী দিক থেকে প্রশ্ন আসে। তাই আটটি দিকই ভালোভাবে শিখে রাখো।
| Word / Phrase | অর্থ (Bengali) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| North | উত্তর | The hills lie to the north. |
| South | দক্ষিণ | Drive south for ten kilometres. |
| East | পূর্ব | The sun rises in the east. |
| West | পশ্চিম | The market is on the west side. |
| Northeast | উত্তর-পূর্ব | Their village is in the northeast. |

The Rules of Asking and Giving Directions
Now sit up straight, because here comes the heart of the lesson. These nine rules cover everything you need for SSC, HSC, admission, and job exam level. Read each rule, then read the teacher’s note in both English and Bengali, then say the examples aloud.
Rule 1: Always Start Politely
Never grab a stranger and fire your question. First, get their attention with a soft, polite opener. This one habit makes you sound like a fluent, well mannered speaker.
In English we do not just walk up and say “Where is the bank?” That sounds rude, almost like an order. We soften it first. Say “Excuse me” and pause for half a second, then ask your question. “Excuse me” is the magic key that opens a stranger’s help. You can add “please” and “sir” or “madam” to sound even warmer. In the exam too, examiners give marks when your dialogue begins politely, so never skip this step.
ইংরেজিতে আমরা হুট করে গিয়ে “Where is the bank?”
- Excuse me, could you help me for a moment?
- Excuse me, sir. May I ask you something?
- Sorry to bother you, but I need a little help.
- Excuse me, please. I am new here.
Rule 2: Ask with the Right Question Pattern
There are a few fixed patterns for asking the way. Pick any one that fits and slot in your destination. These are interrogative sentences, so they end with a question mark.
You do not need twenty ways to ask. You need four or five patterns that you can trust every time. My favourite for a polite, safe question is “Could you tell me the way to …?” It works in every situation, formal or friendly. For a quick, casual ask, “How do I get to …?” is perfect. And the shortest of all is simply “Where is the …?” Learn these frames, and just change the name of the place at the end. That is the whole trick.
পথ জিজ্ঞেস করার জন্য বিশটা উপায় মুখস্থ করার দরকার নেই। দরকার শুধু চার-পাঁচটা নির্ভরযোগ্য pattern, যেগুলো তুমি প্রতিবার নিশ্চিন্তে ব্যবহার করতে পারবে। ভদ্র আর নিরাপদ প্রশ্নের জন্য আমার সবচেয়ে প্রিয় হলো “Could you tell me the way to …?” এটা যে কোনো পরিস্থিতিতে চলে, আনুষ্ঠানিক হোক বা বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ। আর তাড়াহুড়ার সময়, একটু ঘরোয়া ভঙ্গিতে জিজ্ঞেস করতে “How do I get to …?” দারুণ কাজ করে। সবচেয়ে ছোট প্রশ্নটা হলো শুধু “Where is the …?” এই কাঠামোগুলো শিখে নাও, আর শেষে শুধু জায়গার নামটা বদলে দাও, ব্যস, পুরো কাজ শেষ।
- Could you tell me the way to the railway station?
- How do I get to the nearest ATM?
- Where is the city hospital, please?
- Is there a good restaurant near here?
- What is the best way to reach the university gate?
- Which way is the bus stand from here?
- Can you show me the way to the Shaheed Minar?
Rule 3: Give Directions Using the Imperative
When you give directions, you give short commands: Go, Turn, Take, Cross, Follow. These are imperative sentences, where the subject “you” stays hidden. This is the engine of the whole answer.
Here is the beautiful thing about giving directions. You already know how to do it, because it is just imperative sentences, one after another. Start each instruction with an action word: “Go straight,” “Turn left,” “Take the second right,” “Cross the road.” No subject, no “you,” just the verb. Keep them short and put them in the correct order, the way a person will actually walk.
পথনির্দেশ দেওয়ার সময় তুমি ছোট ছোট নির্দেশমূলক বাক্য ব্যবহার করবে: Go, Turn, Take, Cross, Follow। এগুলো imperative sentence, যেখানে subject “you” প্রকাশ্যে থাকে না, বরং উহ্য থাকে। পুরো পথনির্দেশের মূল কাঠামোই এটি। পথনির্দেশ দেওয়ার বিষয়টি আসলে খুব সহজ, কারণ এখানে একটির পর একটি imperative sentence ব্যবহার করা হয়। প্রতিটি নির্দেশ একটি verb দিয়ে শুরু করো, যেমন: “Go straight,” “Turn left,” “Take the second right,” “Cross the road.”
এখানে subject বা “you” লিখতে হবে না; সরাসরি verb দিয়ে শুরু করবে। নির্দেশগুলো ছোট রাখো এবং একজন মানুষ বাস্তবে যে ক্রমে পথটি অতিক্রম করবে, ঠিক সেই ক্রমেই সাজাও। বিষয়টি বিস্তারিতভাবে ঝালিয়ে নিতে আমাদের Assertive to Imperative Sentence Transformation এবং Kinds of Sentences in English Grammar বিষয়ক পাঠগুলো পড়তে পারো, কারণ এখানে তুমি যে ধরনের sentence ব্যবহার করছ, সেটিই imperative sentence।
- Go straight for about five minutes.
- Turn left at the traffic lights.
- Take the second turning on your right.
- Cross the bridge and keep walking.
- Follow this road until it ends.
- Do not turn anywhere, just go straight.
Rule 4: Describe the Location with Prepositions of Place
After you finish the movement part, you tell the person where the place finally sits: next to, opposite, between, in front of, behind. These prepositions of place fix the destination in the mind.
Movement words carry the person forward, but prepositions of place plant the flag at the end. After all the turning and walking, finish with a clear picture: “It is next to the bank,” “It is opposite the school,” “It is between two shops.” This is the line that makes the listener smile and say, “Oh, now I know exactly where it is.” To sharpen your control of these little words, study our Most Important Prepositional Phrases for Job Exams lesson.
চলাফেরার নির্দেশনা শেষ করার পর বলবে, গন্তব্যটি ঠিক কোথায় অবস্থিত: next to, opposite, between, in front of, behind। এই preposition of place-গুলো গন্তব্যের অবস্থানকে স্পষ্ট করে দেয়।
চলাফেরার নির্দেশনাগুলো মানুষকে ধাপে ধাপে সামনে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যায়, আর preposition of place শেষে গন্তব্যের অবস্থানটি নির্দিষ্ট করে দেয়। সব বাঁক নেওয়া ও হাঁটার নির্দেশনার শেষে একটি পরিষ্কার অবস্থান জানাও: “It is next to the bank,” “It is opposite the school,” “It is between two shops.”
এই শেষ বাক্যটিই পথ শুনতে থাকা ব্যক্তিকে বুঝতে সাহায্য করে, “ওহ, এখন আমি ঠিক বুঝতে পারছি জায়গাটি কোথায়।”
এই ছোট শব্দগুলোর ব্যবহার আরও ভালোভাবে আয়ত্ত করতে আমাদের Most Important Prepositional Phrases for Job Exams বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো। পাশাপাশি Structure and Analysis of Sentences পাঠে adjuncts of place কীভাবে কাজ করে, সেটিও দেখে নিতে পারো।।
- The pharmacy is next to the grocery shop.
- The mosque is opposite the girls’ school.
- The bakery is between the barber shop and the tailor.
- You will find the office in front of the bus stop.
- The playground is right behind the college building.
- The ATM is on your left, just after the corner.
Rule 5: Use Landmarks and Sequence Words
Good directions are told in order, step by step, with landmarks to guide the eye. Use sequence words like first, then, after that, when you reach, and finally.
Never dump all the instructions in one breath. Break the journey into small steps and connect them with sequence words. “First, go straight. Then turn left at the mosque. After that, walk for two minutes. When you reach the big tree, the shop is right there.” See how each step hands the person to the next one? And always hang your steps on landmarks, a mosque, a tree, a school, a shop, because people remember what they can see, not street names they have never heard.
ভালো পথনির্দেশ সব সময় ধাপে ধাপে সঠিক ক্রমে দেওয়া হয়, আর চোখে পড়ার মতো পরিচিত স্থান ব্যবহার করে পথ বুঝিয়ে দেওয়া হয়। ধাপের ক্রম বোঝাতে first, then, after that, when you reach এবং finally-এর মতো sequence word ব্যবহার করো।
সব নির্দেশ একসঙ্গে এক নিঃশ্বাসে বলে দিও না। পুরো পথটিকে ছোট ছোট ধাপে ভাগ করো এবং sequence word দিয়ে এক ধাপের সঙ্গে পরের ধাপটি যুক্ত করো। যেমন: “First, go straight. Then turn left at the mosque. After that, walk for two minutes. When you reach the big tree, the shop is right there.”
- First, go straight until you see a big banyan tree.
- Then take the first left after the tree.
- After that, walk past the police station.
- When you reach the crossroads, turn right.
- Finally, you will see the clinic on your left.
Rule 6: Give Distance and Time
People feel calmer when they know how far and how long. Add a rough distance or time so the walker knows what to expect.
A small extra kindness in directions is telling the person how far or how long. “It is about a five minute walk.” “It is roughly two hundred metres from here.” “Walk for two blocks.” Notice the words “about,” “roughly,” and “around,” because you are giving an estimate, not an exact measurement. This tiny detail stops the listener from worrying that they have missed the turn. It is a mark of a confident, caring speaker.
যেমন: “It is about a five minute walk.” “It is roughly two hundred metres from here.” “Walk for two blocks.”
- It is only a two minute walk from here.
- The station is about half a kilometre away.
- Walk for around three blocks and you will see it.
- It is quite far, so you had better take a rickshaw.
- The place is very close, just a minute on foot.
Rule 7: What to Say When You Cannot Help
Sometimes you simply do not know the way. That is fine. There is a polite, honest way to say so, and even to offer another idea.
What if someone asks you and you have no idea? Do not stay silent and do not point in a wrong direction, because that only makes them more lost. Say it honestly and kindly: “I am sorry, I am not from here.” “I am afraid I do not know this area.” Then, if you can, offer a small alternative: “You could ask at the shop over there,” or “Try using a map on your phone.” Being honest and helpful is far better than a confident wrong answer.
সোজাসাপ্টা ও ভদ্রভাবে বলো: “I am sorry, I am not from here.” অথবা “I am afraid I do not know this area.”
এরপর সম্ভব হলে বিকল্প একটি পরামর্শ দাও: “You could ask at the shop over there,” অথবা “Try using a map on your phone.”
আত্মবিশ্বাসের সঙ্গে ভুল পথ দেখানোর চেয়ে সৎভাবে না জানা স্বীকার করা এবং যতটা সম্ভব সাহায্য করা অনেক ভালো।
- I am sorry, I am not from this area.
- I am afraid I do not know the way there.
- I am new here myself, so I cannot help much.
- You could ask the shopkeeper on the corner.
- Try checking a map app on your phone.
Rule 8: Repeat, Confirm, and Thank
After you receive directions, repeat them back to be sure, then thank the person warmly. This last step keeps you from getting lost and leaves a good impression.
When someone finishes giving you directions, do not just walk away. Repeat the key steps back to confirm you understood: “So, I go straight, turn left at the mosque, and it is on my right?” This gives the other person a chance to fix any mistake. Then close with warm thanks: “Thank you so much,” or “Thanks a lot for your help.” And if you are the one giving directions, reply gently with “You are welcome” or “No problem.” Good manners are the frame around every good conversation.
যেমন: “So, I go straight, turn left at the mosque, and it is on my right?” এতে কোনো ভুল হয়ে থাকলে অন্য ব্যক্তি তা সংশোধন করার সুযোগ পাবে।
এরপর আন্তরিকভাবে ধন্যবাদ জানাও: “Thank you so much,” অথবা “Thanks a lot for your help.” আর তুমি যদি পথনির্দেশ দাও, তাহলে ভদ্রভাবে উত্তর দিতে পারো: “You are welcome” অথবা “No problem.”
ভদ্রতা যেকোনো ভালো কথোপকথনের একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ।
- So, I turn right at the bank, then it is on my left, correct?
- Let me repeat: go straight, cross the road, and it is opposite the park.
- Thank you so much for your help.
- Thanks a lot, that was very clear.
- You are welcome. Have a nice day.
Rule 9: Avoid These Common Mistakes
A few small errors trip up almost every learner. Fix these once and your directions will sound natural and correct.
Let me save you from the mistakes I hear most often. We say “Turn left,” not “Go to left.” We say “on the left,” not “in the left.” We say “reach the station,” not “reach to the station,” because “reach” does not take “to.” And we say “opposite the school,” not “opposite of the school.” These are tiny slips, but examiners notice them at once. Say the correct versions aloud a few times now, and they will stick.
কিছু ছোট ভুল প্রায় সব শিক্ষার্থীই করে। এগুলো একবার ঠিকভাবে শিখে নিলে তোমার পথনির্দেশ অনেক বেশি স্বাভাবিক ও সঠিক শোনাবে।
চলো, সবচেয়ে বেশি যে ভুলগুলো হয় সেগুলো আগে থেকেই ঠিক করে নিই। আমরা বলি “Turn left,” “Go to left” নয়। বলি “on the left,” “in the left” নয়। বলি “reach the station,” “reach to the station” নয়, কারণ ‘reach’-এর পরে ‘to’ বসে না। আর বলি “opposite the school,” “opposite of the school” নয়।
এগুলো খুব ছোট ভুল, কিন্তু পরীক্ষকেরা সঙ্গে সঙ্গে ধরে ফেলেন। তাই সঠিক রূপগুলো এখনই কয়েকবার জোরে জোরে বলো, তাহলে এগুলো সহজে মনে গেঁথে যাবে।
- Correct: Turn left at the corner. (Wrong: Go to left at the corner.)
- Correct: The shop is on the right. (Wrong: The shop is in the right.)
- Correct: When you reach the market, stop. (Wrong: When you reach to the market, stop.)
- Correct: It is opposite the mosque. (Wrong: It is opposite of the mosque.)
- Correct: Go straight ahead. (Wrong: Go straight to ahead.)
Sample Dialogues
Read these model conversations aloud. They put all nine rules together, and they are exactly the shape SSC and HSC dialogue writing answers should take.
