Past Perfect Continuous Tense: Rules, Structure & Examples

Learn the past perfect continuous tense: structure, negative and interrogative forms, since vs for, past perfect vs continuous, and examples for SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams. With Bengali explanations.

Imagine your friend walks into your room at night and finds your eyes red and tired. Why? Because you had been studying for six hours before he came. That sentence does something clever: it looks back to a past moment (when he came) and describes an action that had already been going on for a while before it. That is the past perfect continuous tense, and it is the tense of “how long something had been happening” in the past. This lesson takes you from its structure up to the finer rules for admission and job exams.

What is the Past Perfect Continuous Tense?

The past perfect continuous tense expresses an action that had been going on for a period of time before another action or moment in the past (অতীতের আরেকটি কাজের আগে কিছু সময় ধরে চলছিল এমন কাজ)। As with the present perfect continuous, the length of time is usually mentioned.

Past perfect continuous tense এমন একটি কাজ প্রকাশ করে যা অতীতের আরেকটি কাজ বা মুহূর্তের আগে কিছু সময় ধরে চলছিল। present perfect continuous এর মতোই, এখানে সাধারণত কতক্ষণ ধরে তা উল্লেখ থাকে।

It is one of the twelve tenses, closely linked to the past perfect and present perfect continuous tenses. For the whole picture, see our classification of tenses.

এটি বারোটি tense এর একটি, যা past perfect ও present perfect continuous এর সাথে ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে সম্পর্কিত।

Signal words (চিহ্ন): for, since, how long, before, when, all day, all morning.

The Structure

We use “had been” with the -ing form of the verb, for all subjects.

আমরা সব subject এর সাথেই “had been” এবং verb এর -ing রূপ ব্যবহার করি।

Structure: subject + had been + (verb + ing) + for/since + time.

FormStructureExample
Affirmative (হাঁ-বোধক)subject + had been + verb-ingShe had been cooking for an hour.
Negative (না-বোধক)subject + had + not + been + verb-ingShe had not been cooking for an hour.
Interrogative (প্রশ্নবোধক)Had + subject + been + verb-ing?Had she been cooking for an hour?

Note the negative carefully: the word not goes after ‘had’, so it is “had not been”, never “had been not”.

Negative টি খেয়াল করো: not শব্দটি ‘had’ এর পরে বসে, তাই এটি “had not been”, কখনো “had been not” নয়।

Examples:

  • The gardener had been watering the plants since dawn.
  • We had been travelling for six hours before we reached Sylhet.
  • He had been suffering from fever for a week.
  • They had been building the house since January.

Negative and Interrogative Forms

For the negative, add not after ‘had’. For a question, move ‘had’ to the front.

Negative করতে ‘had’ এর পরে not বসাও। প্রশ্ন করতে ‘had’ বাক্যের শুরুতে আনো।

Examples:

  • Negative: I had not been feeling well before the trip.
  • Negative: They had not been living there for long.
  • Interrogative: Had you been waiting long before the bus came?
  • Interrogative: Had it been raining all night?

Since and For

Like the present perfect continuous, this tense usually carries a time expression, so you must choose ‘since’ or ‘for’ correctly.

present perfect continuous এর মতোই, এই tense সাধারণত একটি সময় প্রকাশক বহন করে, তাই ‘since’ বা ‘for’ সঠিকভাবে বাছতে হবে।

Use ‘for’ with a period of time (কত সময় ধরে)।

Examples:

  • He had been reading for two hours.
  • They had been friends for many years.

Use ‘since’ with a point of time (কখন থেকে)।

Examples:

  • He had been reading since morning.
  • They had been friends since their school days.

Quick test: if the time answers “how long?”, use ‘for’; if it answers “starting when?”, use ‘since’. A clock time, day, or year takes ‘since’; a length like two hours takes ‘for’.

দ্রুত পরীক্ষা: সময়টি “কতক্ষণ ধরে?” এর উত্তর দিলে ‘for’; “কখন থেকে?” এর উত্তর দিলে ‘since’। ঘড়ির সময়, দিন বা সাল হলে ‘since’, আর দুই ঘণ্টার মতো ব্যাপ্তি হলে ‘for’।

Two Actions in the Past

This tense often appears with a second past action. The longer, earlier action that was going on takes the past perfect continuous, and the later action that came after takes the past simple. Join them with when, before, or after.

এই tense প্রায়ই অতীতের দ্বিতীয় একটি কাজের সাথে আসে। যে দীর্ঘ, আগের কাজটি চলছিল সেটি past perfect continuous এ বসে, আর পরে আসা কাজটি past simple এ বসে। এদের when, before বা after দিয়ে যুক্ত করো।

Structure: Past Perfect Continuous + when/before/after + Past Simple.

Examples:

  • The students had been chatting for ten minutes when the teacher entered.
  • They had been living in Dhaka for five years before they moved to Khulna.

You can also put the conjunction first. When you do, place a comma between the two parts.

তুমি conjunction টি শুরুতেও বসাতে পারো। তখন দুই অংশের মাঝে একটি কমা বসবে।

Examples:

  • When you reached there, I had been preparing for the journey for two hours.
  • Before the rain stopped, we had been waiting under the tree for an hour.

Showing the Cause of a Past State

A very common use is to explain why something was a certain way in the past. The ongoing earlier action explains the later state.

একটি খুব সাধারণ ব্যবহার হলো অতীতে কোনো কিছু কেন এমন ছিল তা ব্যাখ্যা করা। আগের চলমান কাজটি পরের অবস্থাটি ব্যাখ্যা করে।

Examples:

  • Her eyes were red because she had been crying.
  • He was out of breath because he had been running.
  • The ground was wet because it had been raining.

Past Perfect vs Past Perfect Continuous

Admission and job exams often test this difference. The past perfect stresses that an action was complete before another past action. The past perfect continuous stresses that an action was ongoing, and for how long, before that past action.

Admission ও job পরীক্ষায় এই পার্থক্য প্রায়ই আসে। Past perfect জোর দেয় কাজটি অতীতের আরেকটি কাজের আগে সম্পন্ন হয়েছিল তার উপর। আর past perfect continuous জোর দেয় কাজটি চলছিল এবং কতক্ষণ ধরে চলছিল তার উপর।

Examples:

  • She had cooked dinner before the guests arrived. (past perfect: the cooking was finished)
  • She had been cooking for an hour when the guests arrived. (past perfect continuous: the cooking was still going on)

A Common Trap: Stative Verbs

Some verbs (Stative Verbs) describe a state, not an action, and are not normally used in the continuous form. These include know, believe, understand, love, want, and own. With these, use the past perfect instead.

কিছু verb একটি অবস্থা বোঝায়, কাজ নয়, আর এদের সাধারণত continuous রূপে ব্যবহার করা হয় না। এদের মধ্যে আছে know, believe, understand, love, want, own। এদের ক্ষেত্রে past perfect continuous এর বদলে past perfect ব্যবহার করো।

Examples:

  • Correct: I had known her for ten years before she left. (not “had been knowing”)
  • Correct: He had owned the shop for a decade. (not “had been owning”)

Practice Exercise with Answers

Fill in each gap with the past perfect continuous tense, or the correct tense where a second past action applies.

প্রতিটি gap এ past perfect continuous বসাও, অথবা দ্বিতীয় অতীত কাজের ক্ষেত্রে সঠিক tense বসাও। নিজে চেষ্টা করার পরে উত্তর মিলিয়ে নাও।

Answers

  1. had been studying
  2. had been living
  3. had been waiting; for
  4. had been practising
  5. Hadbeen working

A Tip for the Exam

Two clues point straight to this tense: a length of time (‘for’ or ‘since’) attached to a past action, and a second, later past action to compare it with. When you see both, use “had been + verb-ing” for the earlier, ongoing action, and the past simple for the later one. But run the two quick checks first: is the verb stative (then use past perfect), and does the sentence stress completion rather than duration (then also past perfect)? Those checks protect the marks careless students give away.
