What is the Past Indefinite Tense?

The past indefinite tense expresses an action or event that was completed at some time in the past (অতীতে সম্পন্ন হওয়া কাজ বা ঘটনা)।

Past indefinite tense এমন একটি কাজ বা ঘটনা প্রকাশ করে যা অতীতের কোনো সময়ে সম্পন্ন হয়েছিল।

It is one of the twelve tenses. For the full picture, see our classification of tenses. This tense is also the base you need for tag questions.

Signal words (চিহ্ন): yesterday, ago, last night, last week, in 2010, once, long ago, the other day.

How to Form the Past Tense: Regular and Irregular Verbs

Before the structure, you must know how a verb becomes past. There are two kinds of verb.

গঠন শেখার আগে জানতে হবে একটি verb কীভাবে past হয়। verb দুই ধরনের।

Regular verbs form the past by adding ‘-ed’ to the base verb (regular verb এ -ed যোগ হয়)।

Examples:

  • walk → walked, play → played, help → helped

But watch the spelling (বানান খেয়াল করো):

  • If the verb ends in ‘e’, add only ‘-d’: love → loved, close → closed.
  • If it ends in a consonant + ‘y’, change ‘y’ to ‘-ied’: cry → cried, study → studied.
  • If a short verb ends in one vowel + one consonant, double the consonant: stop → stopped, plan → planned.
  • In a two-syllable verb, double the consonant only if the stress is on the last syllable: prefer → preferred, but visit → visited.

Irregular verbs do not take ‘-ed’. They change their form, and you must learn them by heart (irregular verb নিজস্ব নিয়মে বদলায়, মুখস্থ করতে হয়)।

Examples:

  • go → went, eat → ate, buy → bought, write → wrote, take → took
  • A few stay the same: put → put, cut → cut, hit → hit

The Structure

An important point: the past verb form is the same for every subject. There is no change for he, she, or they.

একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কথা: past verb এর রূপ সব subject এর জন্য একই। he, she বা they এর জন্য কোনো পরিবর্তন হয় না।

Structure: subject + past form of verb + object.

FormStructureExample
Affirmative (হাঁ-বোধক)subject + past verbShe wrote a letter.
Negative (না-বোধক)subject + did not + base verbShe did not write a letter.
Interrogative (প্রশ্নবোধক)Did + subject + base verb?Did she write a letter?

Examples:

  • Mr Rahman gave me a pen yesterday.
  • The children played in the field.
  • We saw a good film last night.

The ‘Did’ Rule (Very Important)

In the negative and interrogative, we use the auxiliary ‘did’. Here is the key point students forget: once ‘did’ is used, the main verb goes back to its base form, not its past form. A sentence cannot carry two past verbs.

Negative ও interrogative এ আমরা auxiliary ‘did’ ব্যবহার করি। শিক্ষার্থীরা যে মূল বিষয়টি ভুলে যায়: একবার ‘did’ ব্যবহার করলে main verb তার past রূপ থেকে base রূপে ফিরে যায়। একটি বাক্যে দুটি past verb থাকতে পারে না।

Examples:

  • Affirmative: He went to school.
  • Negative: He did not go to school. (not “did not went”)
  • Interrogative: Did he go to school? (not “Did he went”)

The Uses of the Past Indefinite Tense

Learn the main uses, because exams test more than just “a past action”.

প্রধান ব্যবহারগুলো শেখো, কারণ পরীক্ষায় শুধু “একটি অতীত কাজ” এর বেশি আসে।

Use 1: A completed action at a definite past time.

অতীতের একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে সম্পন্ন একটি কাজ।

Examples:

  • She arrived an hour ago.
  • We won the match last Friday.

Use 2: A series of completed actions, one after another.

একের পর এক সম্পন্ন হওয়া কয়েকটি কাজ।

Examples:

  • He entered the room, sat down, and opened his book.

Use 3: A past habit or repeated action, often with ‘used to’ or ‘would’.

অতীতের একটি অভ্যাস বা বারবার ঘটা কাজ, প্রায়ই ‘used to’ বা ‘would’ সহ।

Examples:

  • I used to swim in this river as a boy.
  • Every evening, he would sit by the window.

Note: use ‘used to’ for both past habits and past states, but ‘would’ only for repeated actions, not states.

মনে রেখো: অতীতের অভ্যাস ও অবস্থা দুটোর জন্য ‘used to’ ব্যবহার করো, কিন্তু ‘would’ শুধু বারবার ঘটা কাজের জন্য, অবস্থার জন্য নয়। যেমন “I used to have a bike” ঠিক, কিন্তু “I would have a bike” ভুল।

Use 4: In telling a story or a piece of history.

কোনো গল্প বা ইতিহাস বলার সময়।

Examples:

  • The king called the wise man and asked for advice.

The Unreal Past (Past Form, Present Meaning)

Here is a point exams love. Some expressions use a past-tense verb but do not talk about the past at all. They express a wish, an imaginary situation, or something that should happen now. This is called the unreal past.

এখানে পরীক্ষার একটি প্রিয় বিষয়। কিছু expression past-tense verb ব্যবহার করে কিন্তু অতীতের কথা মোটেও বলে না। এরা একটি ইচ্ছা, একটি কাল্পনিক পরিস্থিতি, বা এখন হওয়া উচিত এমন কিছু প্রকাশ করে। একে unreal past বলা হয়।

Examples:

  • I wish I knew the answer. (I do not know it now)
  • It is high time we left for the station. (we should leave now)
  • He talks as if he knew everything. (he does not)
  • If I were a bird, I would fly. (an imaginary situation)

A Note on Polite Requests

The past-form modals ‘would’ and ‘could’ are used to make a request more polite. They do not express past time here; they express politeness.

past রূপের modal ‘would’ ও ‘could’ একটি অনুরোধকে আরও ভদ্র করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এখানে এরা অতীত সময় নয়, বরং ভদ্রতা প্রকাশ করে।

Examples:

  • Would you please lend me your book?
  • Could you close the window?

Past Simple vs Present Perfect

Admission and job exams test this difference. Use the past simple for a finished action at a definite past time (yesterday, last week, in 2010). Use the present perfect when no definite time is given, or the result matters now.

Admission ও job পরীক্ষায় এই পার্থক্য আসে। নির্দিষ্ট অতীত সময়ের (yesterday, last week, in 2010) সম্পন্ন কাজের জন্য past simple ব্যবহার করো। আর নির্দিষ্ট সময় না থাকলে, বা ফল এখন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হলে, present perfect ব্যবহার করো।

Examples:

  • Correct: I saw him yesterday. (definite past time)
  • Correct: I have seen him. (no time given)
  • Wrong: I have seen him yesterday.

A Tip for the Exam

Two things win this tense. First, master the past forms: regular verbs add -ed (with the spelling rules), and irregular verbs must be memorised. Second, remember the two traps: after ‘did’, the main verb goes back to its base form (did not go, not “did not went”); and after ‘I wish’, ‘as if’, and ‘it is high time’, the past form gives a present, unreal meaning. Learn your irregular verbs well and watch those two traps, and the simple past becomes some of the easiest marks on the paper.

দুটি জিনিস এই tense এ জয় এনে দেয়। প্রথমত, past রূপগুলো আয়ত্ত করো: regular verb এ -ed যোগ হয় (বানানের নিয়মসহ), আর irregular verb মুখস্থ করতে হয়। দ্বিতীয়ত, দুটি ফাঁদ মনে রেখো: ‘did’ এর পরে main verb তার base রূপে ফিরে যায় (did not go, “did not went” নয়); আর ‘I wish’, ‘as if’, ‘it is high time’ এর পরে past রূপ একটি বর্তমান, অবাস্তব অর্থ দেয়। irregular verb ভালোভাবে শেখো আর এই দুটি ফাঁদ খেয়াল রাখো, তাহলে simple past পরীক্ষার সবচেয়ে সহজ নম্বরগুলোর একটি হয়ে ওঠে।

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the past indefinite tense?

It is the simple past tense, expressing an action completed at some time in the past, such as “She wrote a letter yesterday”.

How do you form the past tense of a verb?

Regular verbs add ‘-ed’ (walk to walked). Irregular verbs change form and must be learned by heart (go to went, buy to bought).

Why is it “did not go” and not “did not went”?

Because once ‘did’ is used, the main verb returns to its base form. A sentence cannot have two past verbs, so it is “did not go”.

What is the difference between past simple and present perfect?

Use the past simple with a definite past time (I saw him yesterday). Use the present perfect when no time is stated (I have seen him).

Why does “I wish I knew” use a past verb for the present?

This is the unreal past. After ‘I wish’, ‘as if’, and ‘it is high time’, a past-tense verb expresses a present, imaginary, or unreal meaning, not a past action.
