Say the words “a doctor.” Now say “a dedicated village doctor who serves the poor.” It is the same doctor, but the second version breathes, it has colour, detail, and life. Those extra words that add colour to a plain noun or verb are called modifiers, and learning to use them is one of the most scoring skills for HSC English 2nd paper, where a full five-mark question asks you to “use modifiers as directed.”
Here is the reassuring part: the whole topic runs on a fixed set of instructions. Once you know what each instruction means, you can fill every blank with confidence. In this lesson: Use of Modifiers in English, I will teach you every modifier the board asks for, with clear rules and examples.
“a doctor” কথাটি বলো। এবার বলো, “a dedicated village doctor who serves the poor.”
What is a Modifier?
A modifier is a word or group of words that describes, qualifies, or limits another word, adding extra information about it. That “another word” is called the head word. A modifier can describe a noun, a verb, an adjective, or an adverb. If you remove a modifier, the sentence still stands, but it loses its detail and colour.
Example: in “a brilliant student”, the noun ‘student’ is the head word, and ‘brilliant’ is the modifier that describes it.
উদাহরণ: “a brilliant student” এ, noun ‘student’ হলো head word, আর ‘brilliant’ হলো সেই modifier যা এটিকে বর্ণনা করে।
Pre-Modifier vs Post-Modifier
There are two kinds of modifier, and the difference is simply about position. Learn this, and half the topic is already yours.
Modifier দুই ধরনের, আর এদের মধ্যে পার্থক্যটি মূলত অবস্থানের ওপর নির্ভর করে। এই বিষয়টি ভালোভাবে বুঝে ফেললে Modifier-এর অর্ধেকই তোমার শেখা হয়ে যাবে।
| Type | Position | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-modifier (পূর্ব-বিশেষক) | sits before the head word (head এর আগে) | a beautiful garden |
| Post-modifier (পর-বিশেষক) | sits after the head word (head এর পরে) | a book written by Nazrul |
Modifiers in the HSC Exam
In HSC English 2nd paper, there is a passage with ten blanks, worth five marks, headed “Read the following text and use modifiers as directed.” Each blank comes with an instruction in brackets, such as “(pre-modify the noun with an adjective)” or “(post-modify the verb with an adverb).” Your job is to read the instruction, find the head word, and supply the right kind of modifier. So the real skill is understanding what each instruction is asking for, and that is exactly what the rules below teach you.
HSC English 2nd Paper-এ একটি passage দেওয়া থাকে, যেখানে দশটি শূন্যস্থান থাকে এবং প্রশ্নটির মান ৫। প্রশ্নের নির্দেশনা থাকে: “Read the following text and use modifiers as directed.” প্রতিটি শূন্যস্থানের সঙ্গে brackets-এর মধ্যে একটি নির্দেশনা দেওয়া থাকে, যেমন “pre-modify the noun with an adjective” অথবা “post-modify the verb with an adverb.”
তোমার কাজ হলো নির্দেশনাটি ভালোভাবে পড়া, head word খুঁজে বের করা এবং নির্দেশনা অনুযায়ী সঠিক ধরনের modifier বসানো। তাই আসল দক্ষতা হলো প্রতিটি নির্দেশনা তোমার কাছে ঠিক কী চাইছে, তা বুঝতে পারা। নিচের নিয়মগুলোতে ঠিক এই বিষয়টিই শেখানো হয়েছে।
Part 1: Pre-Modifiers
These modifiers come before the head word. Here are all the kinds the board asks for.
এই modifier গুলো head word এর আগে বসে। বোর্ড পরীক্ষায় যেসব ধরন চায়, সবগুলো এখানে দেওয়া হলো।
Rule 1: Pre-modify a Noun with an Adjective
The most common modifier of all is an adjective placed before a noun. When the instruction says “pre-modify the noun with an adjective”, just put a describing word before it, like good, brilliant, or beautiful. Our lesson on the Adjective: Types, Order, and Usage Rules lists many you can use.
সবচেয়ে সাধারণ modifier হলো noun-এর আগে বসা adjective। যখন নির্দেশনায় বলা হয় “pre-modify the noun with an adjective”, তখন শুধু noun-এর আগে একটি বর্ণনামূলক adjective বসাও, যেমন good, brilliant বা beautiful।
তুমি ব্যবহার করতে পারো এমন আরও অনেক adjective জানতে আমাদের Adjective বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- He is a brilliant student.
- She lives in a beautiful house.
Rule 2: Pre-modify a Noun with a Noun-Adjective
Sometimes a noun sits before another noun and works like an adjective; we call it a noun-adjective. In “a jackfruit tree”, the noun ‘jackfruit’ describes the tree. When the board says “use a noun-adjective”, supply a noun that names or classifies the head noun.
Examples:
- I sat under a jackfruit tree.
- He is a village doctor.
Rule 3: Pre-modify a Noun with a Determiner or Article
A determiner or an article can sit before a noun to point it out or fix its number. This includes the articles a, an, the, and words like some, any, many, this, that. See our lessons on Determiners in English Grammar and Articles (A, An, The): Rules.
Determiner বা article noun-এর আগে বসে noun-টিকে নির্দিষ্ট করে বা তার সংখ্যা সম্পর্কে ধারণা দেয়। এর মধ্যে a, an, the-এর মতো article এবং some, any, many, this, that-এর মতো word রয়েছে। এ বিষয়ে আরও জানতে আমাদের Determiners এবং Articles বিষয়ক পাঠগুলো পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- The sun rises in the east.
- Many students joined the club.
Rule 4: Pre-modify a Noun with a Possessive or Demonstrative
A possessive (my, our, his, their) or a demonstrative (this, that, these, those) can pre-modify a noun to show whose it is or which one it is.
Possessive, যেমন my, our, his, their, অথবা demonstrative, যেমন this, that, these, those, noun-এর আগে বসে তাকে pre-modify করতে পারে। এগুলো noun-টি কার বা কোনটি, তা বোঝায়।
Examples:
- Our country is beautiful.
- This book is mine.
Rule 5: Pre-modify a Noun with a Quantifier or Numeral
A quantifier (some, many, much, a few) or a numeral (one, two, first, second) can come before a noun to tell how many or how much.
Quantifier, যেমন some, many, much, a few, অথবা numeral, যেমন one, two, first, second, noun-এর আগে বসে সংখ্যা বা পরিমাণ বোঝাতে পারে।
Examples:
- Three boys were absent.
- He ate a few mangoes.
Rule 6: Pre-modify an Adjective or Adverb with an Intensifier
An intensifier is a small adverb like very, too, quite, or extremely that sits before an adjective or an adverb to make it stronger. When the board says “pre-modify the adjective with an intensifier”, put one of these before the describing word.
Intensifier হলো very, too, quite বা extremely-এর মতো ছোট adverb, যা adjective বা adverb-এর আগে বসে তার অর্থকে আরও জোরালো করে। বোর্ড পরীক্ষার নির্দেশনায় যখন বলা হয় “pre-modify the adjective with an intensifier”, তখন adjective-এর আগে এ ধরনের একটি intensifier বসাবে।
Examples:
- The boy was very hungry.
- She sings quite beautifully.
Rule 7: Pre-modify a Verb with an Adverb
An adverb can sit before a verb to tell how or how often the action happens. When the board says “pre-modify the verb with an adverb”, put an adverb like carefully, quickly, or always before it. See our lesson on the adverb.
Adverb verb-এর আগে বসে কাজটি কীভাবে বা কতবার ঘটে, তা বোঝাতে পারে। বোর্ডের নির্দেশনায় যখন বলা হয় “pre-modify the verb with an adverb”, তখন verb-এর আগে carefully, quickly বা always-এর মতো একটি adverb বসাবে। এ বিষয়ে আরও জানতে আমাদের Adverb বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- He carefully read the letter.
- She always helps the poor.
Part 2: Post-Modifiers
These modifiers come after the head word. This group carries the trickier board instructions, so learn each one well.
এই modifier-গুলো head word-এর পরে বসে। এই group-এ বোর্ড পরীক্ষার তুলনামূলকভাবে একটু কঠিন নির্দেশনাগুলো থাকে, তাই প্রতিটি ভালোভাবে শিখে রাখো।
Rule 8: Post-modify with a Present Participle
A present participle is the -ing form of a verb (running, singing). It can post-modify a noun (the girl singing a song) or work at the start as a participle phrase (Running fast, he caught the bus). When the board says “use a present participle”, supply an -ing form. Our lesson on phrases explains these well.
Present participle হলো verb-এর -ing form, যেমন running, singing। এটি noun-এর পরে বসে তাকে post-modify করতে পারে, যেমন “the girl singing a song”। আবার sentence-এর শুরুতে participle phrase হিসেবেও বসতে পারে, যেমন “Running fast, he caught the bus.”
পরীক্ষার নির্দেশনায় যখন বলা হয় “use a present participle”, তখন verb-এর -ing form ব্যবহার করবে। এ বিষয়ে আরও বিস্তারিত জানতে আমাদের Phrases বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- I saw a boy flying a kite.
- Eating a balanced diet, we can stay healthy.
Rule 9: Post-modify a Noun with a Past Participle
A past participle is the third form of a verb (written, broken, driven). It post-modifies a noun to show that something was done to it. When the board says “use a past participle”, supply that third form. Our lesson on right forms of verbs lists them.
Past participle হলো verb-এর third form, যেমন written, broken, driven। এটি noun-এর পরে বসে তাকে post-modify করে এবং বোঝায় যে noun-টির ওপর কোনো কাজ করা হয়েছে। বোর্ডের নির্দেশনায় যখন বলা হয় “use a past participle”, তখন verb-এর third form ব্যবহার করবে। এ ধরনের verb form সম্পর্কে আরও জানতে আমাদের Right Forms of Verbs বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- This is a book written by Nazrul.
- Driven by hunger, the fox stole some food.
Rule 10: Post-modify with an Infinitive
An infinitive is ‘to’ plus a verb (to help, to win). It can post-modify a verb (He came to help us), a noun (a chance to win), or an adjective (easy to solve). When the board names an infinitive, supply a ‘to + verb’ form.
Infinitive হলো ‘to + verb’ গঠন, যেমন to help, to win। এটি verb-এর পরে বসে তাকে post-modify করতে পারে, যেমন “He came to help us”; noun-এর পরে বসতে পারে, যেমন “a chance to win”; অথবা adjective-এর পরে বসতে পারে, যেমন “easy to solve”। বোর্ডের নির্দেশনায় যখন infinitive ব্যবহার করতে বলা হবে, তখন ‘to + verb’ গঠন ব্যবহার করবে।
Examples:
- He went to the shop to buy books.
- The sum is easy to solve.
Rule 11: Post-modify with a Prepositional Phrase
A prepositional phrase begins with a preposition (in, on, at, with, by) and can post-modify a noun (the man in the room) or a verb (He went to school). When the board says “use a prepositional phrase”, supply a preposition plus a noun. Our appropriate prepositions lesson helps here.
Prepositional phrase একটি preposition দিয়ে শুরু হয়, যেমন in, on, at, with, by। এটি noun-এর পরে বসে তাকে post-modify করতে পারে, যেমন “the man in the room”; আবার verb-এর পরেও বসতে পারে, যেমন “He went to school.” বোর্ডের নির্দেশনায় যখন “use a prepositional phrase” বলা হবে, তখন একটি preposition-এর সঙ্গে noun বসিয়ে prepositional phrase তৈরি করবে। এ বিষয়ে আমাদের Appropriate Prepositions বিষয়ক পাঠটি তোমাকে সাহায্য করবে।
Examples:
- The boy on the roof is my brother.
- She sings in a sweet voice.
Rule 12: Post-modify a Noun with an Appositive
An appositive is a noun or noun phrase placed right after another noun to rename it or add extra information, set off by commas. When the board says “use an appositive”, supply a naming phrase.
Examples:
- Mr. Rahim, our English teacher, is very kind.
- Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is a busy city.
Rule 13: Post-modify a Noun with a Relative Clause
A relative clause begins with who, which, or that and post-modifies a noun by giving a full clause of information. When the board says “use a relative clause”, supply a who/which/that clause. See our lesson on clauses.
Relative clause হলো এমন একটি clause, যা who, which বা that দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং noun-এর পরে বসে তার সম্পর্কে পূর্ণাঙ্গ তথ্য দিয়ে তাকে post-modify করে। বোর্ডের নির্দেশনায় যখন “use a relative clause” বলা হবে, তখন who, which বা that দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া একটি clause ব্যবহার করবে। এ বিষয়ে আরও জানতে আমাদের Clauses বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- The man who helped me is a doctor.
- I read a book which was very interesting.
Rule 14: Post-modify a Verb with an Adverb or Adverb Phrase
An adverb (fast, carefully) or an adverb phrase (very fast, in the morning) can post-modify a verb to tell how, when, or where the action happens. When the board says “post-modify the verb with an adverb”, put one after the verb.
Adverb, যেমন fast, carefully, অথবা adverb phrase, যেমন very fast, in the morning, verb-এর পরে বসে তাকে post-modify করতে পারে। এগুলো কাজটি কীভাবে, কখন বা কোথায় ঘটে, তা বোঝায়। বোর্ডের নির্দেশনায় যখন বলা হয় “post-modify the verb with an adverb”, তখন verb-এর পরে একটি adverb বসাবে।
Examples:
- He drives carefully.
- They left early in the morning.
Part 3: Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers (Admission & Job Level)
At the admission and job level, modifiers appear in a different way, as an error to spot and fix. A modifier must sit close to the word it describes, or the sentence turns funny or unclear.
ভর্তি ও চাকরির পরীক্ষায় modifier একটু ভিন্নভাবে আসে। সাধারণত ভুল শনাক্ত করে সংশোধন করার প্রশ্ন হিসেবে। একটি modifier-কে যে শব্দটি বর্ণনা করে, তার কাছাকাছি বসতে হয়। তা না হলে sentence-এর অর্থ অদ্ভুত বা অস্পষ্ট হয়ে যেতে পারে।
- A misplaced modifier sits in the wrong place, so it seems to describe the wrong word. “She almost drove the kids to school every day” wrongly uses ‘almost’; the correct sentence is “She drove the kids to school almost every day.”
- একটা misplaced modifier ভুল জায়গায় বসে, ফলে মনে হয় এটা ভুল শব্দকে বর্ণনা করছে। “She almost drove the kids to school every day” বাক্যে ‘almost’ ভুলভাবে বসেছে; সঠিক বাক্য হলো “She drove the kids to school almost every day.”
- A dangling modifier has no proper word to describe, usually at the start of a sentence. “Running down the road, the bag fell” is wrong, because the bag was not running; write “Running down the road, he dropped his bag.”
- একটা dangling modifier এর বর্ণনা করার মতো সঠিক কোনো শব্দ থাকে না, সাধারণত বাক্যের শুরুতে। “Running down the road, the bag fell” ভুল, কারণ ব্যাগ তো দৌড়াচ্ছিল না; লেখো “Running down the road, he dropped his bag.”
How to Answer the Board “Use Modifiers” Question
Read the whole passage first, so you understand the story. Then take each blank one at a time: read its instruction in the brackets, find the head word it refers to, and supply the exact kind of modifier asked for. If it says “pre-modify the noun with an adjective”, give an adjective before that noun; if it says “post-modify the verb with an adverb”, give an adverb after that verb. Finally, read the sentence back to check it makes sense.
যদি বলা হয় “pre-modify the noun with an adjective”, তাহলে সেই noun-এর আগে একটি adjective বসাও। আর যদি বলা হয় “post-modify the verb with an adverb”, তাহলে সেই verb-এর পরে একটি adverb বসাও। সবশেষে sentence-টি আবার পড়ে দেখো, সেটি অর্থপূর্ণ ও সঠিক হয়েছে কি না।
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not ignore the instruction in the brackets. Many students write any word that fits the meaning, but the board wants the exact type it names. If it asks for a noun-adjective and you give an ordinary adjective, you lose the mark even if the meaning is fine.
- Do not confuse a pre-modifier with a post-modifier. Read the instruction: “pre” means before the head word, and “post” means after it. Putting the modifier on the wrong side is a simple but costly mistake.
- Do not forget the right form of a participle. A present participle ends in -ing (running), while a past participle is the third form (driven, written). Mixing them up changes the meaning, so check which one the blank needs.
- Do not place a modifier far from its head word, especially in your own writing. Keep it close, or you create a misplaced or dangling modifier that makes the sentence unclear or even funny.

A Tip for the Exam
The secret to modifiers is to read the instruction before you read the blank. Never rush to fill in a “nice-sounding” word; first see whether it wants a pre-modifier or a post-modifier, and exactly which kind, an adjective, a participle, an appositive, and so on. Then find the head word and give that exact form. Learn the meaning of each board instruction by heart, practise two or three passages a week, and this five-mark question will turn into five easy marks every time.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a modifier in English grammar?
A modifier is a word or group of words that describes, qualifies, or limits another word (the head word), adding extra information about a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb, such as ‘brilliant’ in ‘a brilliant student’.
What is the difference between a pre-modifier and a post-modifier?
A pre-modifier comes before the head word (a beautiful garden), while a post-modifier comes after it (a book written by Nazrul). The board tells you which one to use in each blank.
What kinds of modifiers does the HSC board ask for?
Pre-modifiers include adjectives, noun-adjectives, determiners, articles, possessives, demonstratives, quantifiers, and intensifiers. Post-modifiers include present and past participles, infinitives, prepositional phrases, appositives, relative clauses, and adverbs.
What is a dangling modifier?
A dangling modifier is one that has no proper word to describe, often at the start of a sentence. “Running down the road, the bag fell” is dangling; the correct form is “Running down the road, he dropped his bag.”
How do I answer the “use modifiers as directed” question?
Read the passage, then for each blank read the instruction, find the head word, and supply the exact kind of modifier asked for (a pre-modifier or post-modifier of the right type). Finally, read the sentence back to check it makes sense.
