Punctuation Marks in English: Rules, Uses & Examples

Learn all the punctuation marks in English with rules and examples: capital letters, full stop, comma, question mark, semicolon, colon, apostrophe, and quotation marks, with a 20-sentence exercise for SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams.

Punctuation is the traffic signal of writing. It tells the reader when to pause, when to stop, and when to feel surprise, and without it, sentences crash into one another. Better still, a single mark can completely change your meaning. Look at this: “Let us eat, Grandma” is a kind invitation to dinner. But “Let us eat Grandma” is a threat to poor Grandma! One little comma made all the difference. In SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams, you are often asked to add capital letters and punctuation marks to a text, so this lesson teaches you every rule you need, clearly and simply.

What is Punctuation?

Punctuation is the set of marks we use in writing to make our meaning clear, to show pauses, stops, and feelings, just as our voice does when we speak. Good punctuation makes your writing easy to read; poor punctuation confuses the reader and costs you marks.

Punctuation হলো লেখায় ব্যবহৃত চিহ্নের সমষ্টি যা আমাদের অর্থ পরিষ্কার করে, বিরতি, থামা ও অনুভূতি দেখায়, ঠিক যেমন কথা বলার সময় আমাদের কণ্ঠ করে। ভালো punctuation তোমার লেখা পড়তে সহজ করে; খারাপ punctuation পাঠককে বিভ্রান্ত করে আর তোমার নম্বর কাটে।

Capital Letters (Capitalisation)

Before the marks, learn where to use capital letters, because exams test this together with punctuation. Use a capital letter in these cases.

চিহ্নের আগে শেখো কোথায় capital letter বসাতে হয়, কারণ পরীক্ষায় এটি punctuation এর সাথে একসাথে আসে। এই ক্ষেত্রগুলোতে capital letter ব্যবহার করো।

  • The first word of a sentence: The sun is bright. (বাক্যের প্রথম শব্দ)
  • The pronoun ‘I’, always: My friend and I went out. (সবসময় ‘I’)
  • Names of people, places, and things (proper nouns): Rahim, Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Padma. (নাম)
  • Days, months, and festivals: Sunday, January, Eid. (বার, মাস, উৎসব)
  • Titles before a name: Dr Karim, Mr Rahman, Professor Ali. (নামের আগে পদবি)
  • Languages, nationalities, and religions: English, Bengali, Islam. (ভাষা, জাতি, ধর্ম)
  • The first word of direct speech: He said, “Come here.” (উদ্ধৃত কথার প্রথম শব্দ)

The Full Stop / Period (.)

The full stop marks the end of a sentence that is a statement or a command (an assertive or imperative sentence). It is also used after some short forms.

Full stop একটি বাক্যের শেষ চিহ্নিত করে যা একটি বিবৃতি বা আদেশ (একটি assertive বা imperative বাক্য)। এটি কিছু সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপের পরেও বসে।

Examples:

  • The children are playing in the field.
  • Please close the door.
  • Dr. Karim will see you now.

The Comma (,)

The comma is the busiest mark of all. It shows a short pause and has many uses, so learn each one.

Comma সবচেয়ে ব্যস্ত চিহ্ন। এটি একটি ছোট বিরতি দেখায় এবং এর অনেক ব্যবহার আছে, তাই প্রতিটি শেখো।

  • To separate items in a list: I bought rice, dal, and oil. (তালিকার জিনিস আলাদা করতে)
  • After an introductory word or phrase: However, he refused. In the morning, we left. (শুরুর শব্দ বা phrase এর পরে)
  • To address someone directly: Rahim, come here. (সরাসরি সম্বোধনে)
  • To set off extra information (an appositive): Dhaka, the capital, is crowded. (অতিরিক্ত তথ্য আলাদা করতে)
  • Before ‘but’, ‘and’, ‘so’ joining two full sentences: He was tired, but he kept working. (দুটি পূর্ণ বাক্য জোড়ার আগে)
  • After an if-clause or adverb clause at the start: If it rains, we will stay home. (শুরুর clause এর পরে)
  • Before direct speech: He said, “I am fine.” (উদ্ধৃত কথার আগে)

The Question Mark (?)

The question mark ends a direct question (an interrogative sentence). Note: it is not used with an indirect question. Learn more in our lesson on the kinds of sentences.

Question mark একটি সরাসরি প্রশ্ন (একটি interrogative বাক্য) শেষ করে। মনে রেখো: এটি একটি পরোক্ষ প্রশ্নে ব্যবহৃত হয় না।

Examples:

  • Where do you live? (direct question)
  • She asked where I lived. (indirect question, so a full stop, not a question mark)

The Exclamation Mark (!)

The exclamation mark shows a strong feeling, joy, surprise, sorrow, or anger, and ends an exclamatory sentence or an interjection.

Exclamation mark একটি প্রবল অনুভূতি দেখায়, আনন্দ, বিস্ময়, দুঃখ বা রাগ, আর একটি exclamatory বাক্য বা interjection শেষ করে।

Examples:

  • What a beautiful garden this is!
  • Alas! He has failed.
  • Hurrah! We have won.

The Semicolon (;)

The semicolon joins two closely related sentences (independent clauses) without using a joining word like ‘and’ or ‘but’. Its pause is longer than a comma but shorter than a full stop. See our lesson on clauses in English.

Semicolon দুটি ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে সম্পর্কিত বাক্য (independent clause) কে ‘and’ বা ‘but’ এর মতো কোনো জোড়া-শব্দ ছাড়াই যুক্ত করে। এর বিরতি কমার চেয়ে বড়, কিন্তু full stop এর চেয়ে ছোট।

Examples:

  • Man proposes; God disposes.
  • Do not touch that; it is dangerous.

The Colon (:)

The colon introduces something that follows, usually a list or an explanation. It tells the reader, “here is what I mean”.

Colon পরে আসা কিছু, সাধারণত একটি তালিকা বা একটি ব্যাখ্যা, উপস্থাপন করে। এটি পাঠককে বলে, “এই হলো আমি যা বোঝাতে চাই”।

Examples:

  • She bought three things: a pen, a book, and a bag.
  • Remember this: honesty always pays.

The Apostrophe (‘)

The apostrophe has two main jobs: it shows possession, and it marks the missing letters in a contraction.

Apostrophe এর দুটি প্রধান কাজ: এটি মালিকানা দেখায়, আর একটি contraction এ বাদ পড়া অক্ষর চিহ্নিত করে।

  • Possession: Rahim’s book, the boys’ room. (মালিকানা)
  • Contraction: do not becomes don’t, it is becomes it’s, I am becomes I’m. (সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ)

Watch out: ‘it’s’ means ‘it is’, but ‘its’ shows possession. Do not mix them up.

সাবধান: ‘it’s’ মানে ‘it is’, কিন্তু ‘its’ মালিকানা দেখায়। এদের গুলিয়ো না।

Quotation Marks (” “)

Quotation marks enclose the exact words someone says (direct speech) or a quotation. The full stop or comma usually goes inside the marks.

Quotation mark কারো বলা হুবহু শব্দ (direct speech) বা একটি উদ্ধৃতি ঘিরে রাখে। full stop বা comma সাধারণত চিহ্নের ভেতরে বসে।

Examples:

  • “I am very happy today,” she said.
  • He said, “We will win the match.”

The Hyphen (-) and the Dash

The hyphen is a short mark that joins words together to form a single idea. It is common in compound words and in written numbers.

Hyphen একটি ছোট চিহ্ন যা শব্দকে একসাথে জুড়ে একটি একক ভাব তৈরি করে। এটি compound শব্দ ও লেখা সংখ্যায় সাধারণ।

Examples:

  • a well-known writer, my mother-in-law, twenty-five students.

A dash is a longer mark used to show a sudden pause or an added thought. In formal exam writing, it is better to use a comma, a colon, or parentheses instead, so use the dash sparingly.

একটি dash একটি লম্বা চিহ্ন যা হঠাৎ বিরতি বা যোগ করা ভাবনা দেখাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। আনুষ্ঠানিক পরীক্ষার লেখায় এর বদলে একটি comma, colon বা parentheses ব্যবহার করা ভালো, তাই dash কম ব্যবহার করো।

Parentheses and Brackets ( )

Parentheses (round brackets) enclose extra information that could be left out without breaking the sentence.

Parentheses (গোল বন্ধনী) অতিরিক্ত তথ্য ঘিরে রাখে যা বাক্য না ভেঙে বাদ দেওয়া যায়।

Example:

  • The meeting (held on Monday) was very useful.

A Worked Example: Punctuating a Text

In the exam, you are often given a text with no capitals or marks. Read this example and see how it is corrected step by step.

পরীক্ষায় প্রায়ই তোমাকে capital ও চিহ্নহীন একটি লেখা দেওয়া হয়। এই উদাহরণটি পড়ো এবং দেখো কীভাবে ধাপে ধাপে ঠিক করা হয়।

Without punctuation:

  • rahim is a good boy he lives in dhaka his father asked him where do you go every morning

With capital letters and punctuation:

  • Rahim is a good boy. He lives in Dhaka. His father asked him, “Where do you go every morning?”

Notice the changes: a capital ‘R’ to start, capitals for the names Rahim and Dhaka, full stops to end the statements, a comma before the direct speech, quotation marks around the exact words, and a question mark for the question.

পরিবর্তনগুলো লক্ষ্য করো: শুরুতে বড় ‘R’, Rahim ও Dhaka নামের জন্য বড় হাতের অক্ষর, বিবৃতি শেষ করতে full stop, direct speech এর আগে একটি comma, হুবহু কথার চারপাশে quotation mark, আর প্রশ্নের জন্য একটি question mark।

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not join two full sentences with only a comma; use a full stop or a semicolon. (দুটি পূর্ণ বাক্য শুধু কমা দিয়ে জুড়ো না।)
  • Do not forget the capital letter at the start of a sentence and for names. (বাক্যের শুরুতে ও নামে বড় হাতের অক্ষর ভুলো না।)
  • Do not confuse ‘it’s’ (it is) with ‘its’ (possession). (it’s ও its গুলিয়ো না।)
  • Do not use a question mark for an indirect question. (পরোক্ষ প্রশ্নে question mark নয়।)
  • Do not put an apostrophe in a simple plural: write ‘books’, not ‘book’s’. (সাধারণ plural এ apostrophe নয়।)

A Tip for the Exam

When you punctuate a text, read it slowly and listen to your own voice. Where your voice pauses, a comma often belongs; where it stops fully, a full stop belongs; where it rises to ask, a question mark belongs; and where it lifts with feeling, an exclamation mark belongs. Then check the capitals: the start of every sentence, every name, and the pronoun ‘I’. Work mark by mark, sentence by sentence, and this task becomes a steady, easy source of marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are punctuation marks?

Punctuation marks are the signs we use in writing, such as the full stop, comma, question mark, and apostrophe, to show pauses and stops and to make our meaning clear.

How many punctuation marks are there in English?

There are about fourteen common marks, but the most important for exams are the full stop, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, semicolon, colon, apostrophe, and quotation marks, along with capital letters.

When do I use a comma?

Use a comma to separate items in a list, after an introductory word, to address someone, to set off extra information, before a conjunction joining two sentences, and before direct speech.

What is the difference between ‘it’s’ and ‘its’?

‘It’s’ is short for ‘it is’ (It’s raining). ‘Its’ shows possession (The dog wagged its tail). They are often confused, so check the meaning.

When do I use a semicolon instead of a comma?

Use a semicolon to join two closely related complete sentences without a conjunction, such as “Man proposes; God disposes”. A comma alone cannot join two full sentences.
