Kinds of Sentences in English Grammar: 5 Types with Examples

Learn the 5 kinds of sentences in English: assertive, interrogative, imperative, optative, and exclamatory, with structures, variations, a memory trick, and a 15-sentence exercise with answers for SSC, HSC, and admission exams.

Every sentence you speak is doing one of five jobs. You state something, you ask something, you tell someone to do something, you wish for something, or you cry out with feeling. That is the whole idea behind the kinds of sentences: we sort sentences not by how they are built, but by what they are trying to do. There are five kinds in all, and this lesson explains each one clearly, with a simple memory trick to help you never forget their varieties. It is essential for SSC, HSC, and admission exams, and the base you need before learning transformation of sentences.

What is a Sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought (একটি পূর্ণ ভাব প্রকাশ করে এমন কয়েকটি শব্দ)।

একটি sentence হলো কয়েকটি শব্দের একটি দল যা একটি সম্পূর্ণ ভাব প্রকাশ করে। মনে রেখো, এই শ্রেণিবিভাগ বাক্যের গঠনের উপর নয়, বরং অর্থ ও প্রকাশের উপর ভিত্তি করে করা হয়।

This lesson connects with our lessons on analysis of sentences and parts of speech.

The Five Kinds at a Glance

Based on meaning, sentences are of five kinds. Read this table first.

অর্থের উপর ভিত্তি করে বাক্য পাঁচ প্রকার। প্রথমে এই টেবিলটি পড়ো।

KindWhat it does (কাজ)ExampleEnds with
Assertive (বর্ণনামূলক)States a factThe sky is blue..
Interrogative (প্রশ্নবোধক)Asks a questionDo you like tea??
Imperative (অনুজ্ঞাসূচক)Orders, advises, requestsClose the door.. or !
Optative (প্রার্থনাসূচক)Expresses a wish or prayerMay you succeed!!
Exclamatory (আবেগসূচক)Expresses strong feelingWhat a view it is!!

Note: the assertive sentence is also called the declarative sentence. The two words mean the same thing.

মনে রেখো: assertive sentence কে declarative sentence ও বলা হয়। দুটি শব্দের অর্থ এক।

A Magical Memory Trick: A2 + 2I6 + O2 + E3

Each kind has its own varieties, and students often forget one or two in the exam. So here is a short formula to hold them all:

A2 + 2I6 + O2 + E3

প্রতিটি kind এর নিজস্ব প্রকারভেদ আছে, আর শিক্ষার্থীরা পরীক্ষায় প্রায়ই দু-একটি ভুলে যায়। তাই সবগুলো একসাথে মনে রাখার একটি ছোট সূত্র: A2 + 2I6 + O2 + E3

ElementWhat it stands for
A2Assertive (Affirmative / Negative)
2I6Interrogative 3 + Imperative 3
Interrogative 3Wh-question / Verbal question / Tag question
Imperative 3Order / Advice / Request
O2Optative (Wish / Prayer)
E3Exclamatory (Joy / Sorrow / Wonder)

Here is how to read the theory, in English and Bengali side by side.

এই থিওরিটি কীভাবে পড়তে হয়, ইংরেজি ও বাংলায় পাশাপাশি দেওয়া হলো।

In Englishবাংলায়
The formula packs the varieties of all five kinds into one line.সূত্রটি পাঁচটি kind এর সব প্রকারভেদ এক লাইনে ধরে রাখে।
A2 means Assertive has 2 kinds: affirmative and negative.A2 মানে Assertive এর ২টি প্রকার: affirmative ও negative।
2I6 means the two “I” kinds, Interrogative and Imperative, have 3 varieties each, 6 in total.2I6 মানে দুটি “I” kind, Interrogative ও Imperative, এর প্রতিটির ৩টি করে, মোট ৬টি প্রকার।
O2 means Optative has 2 kinds: wish and prayer.O2 মানে Optative এর ২টি প্রকার: wish ও prayer।
E3 means Exclamatory has 3 kinds: joy, sorrow, and wonder.E3 মানে Exclamatory এর ৩টি প্রকার: joy, sorrow ও wonder।

Remember this one line, and you will never miss a variety again. Now let us take each kind in detail.

এই এক লাইন মনে রাখলে তুমি আর কোনো প্রকার ভুলবে না। এবার চলো প্রতিটি kind বিস্তারিত দেখি।

1. Assertive (Declarative) Sentence

An assertive sentence states a fact, an event, or an opinion (একটি তথ্য, ঘটনা বা মত বর্ণনা করে)।

Assertive sentence একটি তথ্য, ঘটনা বা মত বর্ণনা করে। এটি দুই প্রকার: affirmative (হাঁ-বোধক) ও negative (না-বোধক)।

Structure: Subject + Verb + Object/Complement + Adjunct.

Examples:

  • Affirmative: The Padma is a mighty river.
  • Affirmative: Diligence leads to success.
  • Negative: He does not tell lies.
  • Negative: The shops are not open today.

The signs of a negative sentence. Many students think only ‘not’ makes a sentence negative. But English has several negative words. Learn them, or you may misread a sentence.

Negative বাক্যের চিহ্ন। অনেকে ভাবে শুধু ‘not’ একটি বাক্যকে negative করে। কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে আরও কয়েকটি negative শব্দ আছে। এগুলো শেখো, নইলে বাক্যের অর্থ ভুল বুঝবে।

Negative wordExample
noThere is no water in the pot.
noneWe wanted tickets, but there were none.
no one / nobodyNobody came to the meeting.
nothingShe said nothing about it.
neverHe never breaks a promise.
seldom / rarelyWe rarely eat out.
hardly / scarcelyI could hardly hear him.
neither / norNeither he nor I was present.

2. Interrogative Sentence

An interrogative sentence asks a question and always ends with a question mark (একটি প্রশ্ন করে, শেষে ? বসে)।

Interrogative sentence একটি প্রশ্ন করে এবং সবসময় একটি প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন (?) দিয়ে শেষ হয়। এটি তিন প্রকার: Wh-question, verbal question, tag question।

TypeBegins withExample
Wh-question (প্রশ্নবাচক শব্দ)who, what, why, when, where, howWhy are you late?
Verbal question (verb দিয়ে)am, is, do, does, can, willDoes she sing well?
Tag question (লেজ-প্রশ্ন)a short tag at the endYou know him, don’t you?

Examples:

  • Where does he live now?
  • Have you finished your work?
  • She is a teacher, isn’t she?

Two minor types. Sometimes we meet indirect questions and echo questions.

দুটি ছোট প্রকার। কখনো আমরা indirect question ও echo question পাই।

Examples:

  • Indirect: Could you tell me where the station is?
  • Echo (out of surprise): You did what?

3. Imperative Sentence

An imperative sentence expresses an order, an advice, or a request (আদেশ, উপদেশ বা অনুরোধ প্রকাশ করে)।

Imperative sentence একটি আদেশ, উপদেশ বা অনুরোধ প্রকাশ করে। এটি তিন প্রকার: order, advice, request।

Structure: Verb + Object + Adjunct. The subject ‘you’ is usually hidden.

TypeSign wordsExample
Order (আদেশ)begins with the verbShut the door.
Advice (উপদেশ)should, must, ought toYou should respect elders.
Request (অনুরোধ)please, kindlyPlease help me.

Examples:

  • Finish your work on time. (order)
  • You must obey the law. (advice)
  • Kindly wait for a moment. (request)

The ‘Let’ structure. When the subject is not ‘you’ but I, we, or a third person, use ‘let’ with the objective form of the subject.

‘Let’ গঠন। যখন subject ‘you’ নয় বরং I, we বা তৃতীয় পুরুষ হয়, তখন subject এর objective রূপসহ ‘let’ ব্যবহার করো।

Examples:

  • Let us help the poor.
  • Let him finish the task.

4. Optative Sentence

An optative sentence expresses a wish or a prayer, and usually begins with ‘may’ (একটি ইচ্ছা বা প্রার্থনা প্রকাশ করে, সাধারণত ‘may’ দিয়ে শুরু)।

Optative sentence একটি ইচ্ছা বা প্রার্থনা প্রকাশ করে এবং সাধারণত ‘may’ দিয়ে শুরু হয়। এটি দুই প্রকার: wish ও prayer। মনে রেখো, ‘may’ এই বাক্যের প্রধান চিহ্ন।

Structure: May + Subject + Verb + Object + Adjunct.

Examples:

  • Wish: May you shine in life!
  • Wish: May you have a long and happy life!
  • Prayer: May God bless our country!
  • Prayer: May Allah forgive us!

Note: sometimes the wish is expressed without ‘may’, as in “Long live our nation!” or “Wish you all the best.”

মনে রেখো: কখনো ‘may’ ছাড়াও ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করা হয়, যেমন “Long live our nation!” বা “Wish you all the best.”

5. Exclamatory Sentence

An exclamatory sentence expresses a sudden, strong feeling, and ends with an exclamation mark (হঠাৎ তীব্র অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করে, শেষে ! বসে)।

Exclamatory sentence হঠাৎ তীব্র একটি অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করে এবং একটি বিস্ময়সূচক চিহ্ন (!) দিয়ে শেষ হয়। এটি তিন প্রকার: joy, sorrow, wonder।

Structure: an exclaiming word + rest of the sentence, or What/How + adjective + noun + subject + verb.

Examples:

  • Joy: Hurrah! We have won the game.
  • Sorrow: Alas! The poor bird is dead.
  • Wonder: What a wonderful sight it is!
  • Wonder: How kind she is!

Note: an exclamation is often just a short phrase, not a full sentence. You can read more here: Interjection: Meaning and Uses with Examples

মনে রেখো: একটি exclamation প্রায়ই একটি ছোট বাক্যাংশ, পূর্ণ বাক্য নয়।

Examples:

  • What a goal!
  • How lucky!
  • Oh, my God!

A Tip for the Exam

To name a sentence quickly, look at two things: how it begins and how it ends. A question mark means interrogative. An opening ‘May’ means optative. A ‘please’, ‘kindly’, or a bare verb at the start means imperative. ‘Hurrah’, ‘Alas’, ‘What a’, or ‘How’ with an exclamation mark means exclamatory. Everything else is assertive. Keep the formula A2 + 2I6 + O2 + E3 in mind, and you will catch every variety without missing one.

একটি বাক্যের kind দ্রুত বলতে দুটি জিনিস দেখো: এটি কীভাবে শুরু হয় আর কীভাবে শেষ হয়। প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন মানে interrogative। শুরুতে ‘May’ মানে optative। শুরুতে ‘please’, ‘kindly’ বা একটি খালি verb মানে imperative। ‘Hurrah’, ‘Alas’, ‘What a’ বা ‘How’ এর সাথে ! মানে exclamatory। বাকি সব assertive। A2 + 2I6 + O2 + E3 সূত্রটি মনে রাখো, তাহলে একটি প্রকারও বাদ পড়বে না।
