Here is a small puzzle. You reach the station, out of breath, only to see the platform empty. The train left before you arrived. To tell that story correctly, English needs a way to show which action happened first, and that is exactly what the past perfect tense does. It is the “past before the past”, the tense you use for the earlier of two past actions. Master it, and you can order events in time like a storyteller. This lesson covers it fully, from structure to the finer rules for admission and job exams.
What is the Past Perfect Tense?
The past perfect tense expresses an action that was completed before another action or moment in the past (অতীতের আরেকটি কাজের আগে সম্পন্ন হওয়া কাজ)। In short, when two things happened in the past, the one that happened first takes the past perfect.
Past perfect tense এমন একটি কাজ প্রকাশ করে যা অতীতের আরেকটি কাজ বা মুহূর্তের আগে সম্পন্ন হয়েছিল। সংক্ষেপে, অতীতে যখন দুটি ঘটনা ঘটে, তখন যেটি আগে ঘটেছিল সেটি past perfect এ বসে।
It is one of the twelve tenses. For the full picture, see our classification of tenses, and this tense leads into the past perfect continuous.
Signal words (চিহ্ন): before, after, by the time, already, no sooner, hardly, scarcely, when.
The Structure
We use “had” with the past participle (the third form) of the verb, for all subjects.
আমরা সব subject এর সাথেই “had” এবং verb এর past participle (তৃতীয় রূপ) ব্যবহার করি।
Structure: subject + had + past participle.
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative (হাঁ-বোধক) | subject + had + past participle | The train had left before I reached the station. |
| Negative (না-বোধক) | subject + had + not + past participle | The train had not left before I reached the station. |
| Interrogative (প্রশ্নবোধক) | Had + subject + past participle? | Had the train left before I reached the station? |
Examples:
- She had finished cooking before the guests came.
- We had already eaten when he called.
- I had never seen snow before that trip.
- By the time the police arrived, the thief had escaped.
Negative and Interrogative Forms
For the negative, add not after ‘had’. For a question, move ‘had’ to the front.
Negative করতে ‘had’ এর পরে not বসাও। প্রশ্ন করতে ‘had’ বাক্যের শুরুতে আনো।
Examples:
- Negative: They had not met before the wedding.
- Negative: He had not read the letter before he replied.
- Interrogative: Had you locked the door before you left?
- Interrogative: Had the film started when you arrived?
Two Actions in the Past (The Main Rule)
This is the heart of the tense. When two past actions happened one after another, the earlier action takes the past perfect, and the later action takes the past simple. Join them with ‘before’ or ‘after’.
এটাই এই tense এর মূল কথা। অতীতে যখন দুটি কাজ একের পর এক ঘটে, তখন আগের কাজটি past perfect এ বসে, আর পরের কাজটি past simple এ বসে। এদের ‘before’ বা ‘after’ দিয়ে যুক্ত করো।
The simple way to remember it: whichever action came first goes into the past perfect, no matter where it sits in the sentence.
সহজে মনে রাখার উপায়: যে কাজটি আগে ঘটেছিল সেটিই past perfect এ যাবে, বাক্যে সেটি যেখানেই বসুক না কেন।
Examples:
- The patient had died before the doctor came. (dying was first)
- The doctor came after the patient had died. (same meaning, order reversed)
- We had started our journey before he reached Rajshahi.
No Sooner, Hardly, Scarcely (Important for Exams)
When one action happened immediately after another, we use these special structures, and they invert the verb, placing ‘had’ before the subject. This inversion is heavily tested.
যখন একটি কাজ আরেকটির ঠিক পরপরই ঘটে, তখন আমরা এই বিশেষ গঠনগুলো ব্যবহার করি, আর এগুলো verb কে inversion করে, অর্থাৎ ‘had’ subject এর আগে বসে। এই inversion পরীক্ষায় খুব আসে।
Learn the correct pairs: ‘No sooner’ takes than, while ‘Hardly’ and ‘Scarcely’ take when.
সঠিক জোড়া শেখো: ‘No sooner’ এর সাথে than, আর ‘Hardly’ ও ‘Scarcely’ এর সাথে when বসে।
Examples:
- No sooner had I touched the bird than it flew away.
- Hardly had the teacher entered the classroom when the students stood up.
- Scarcely had we sat down when the power went out.
Other Time Words: Till, Until, By the Time
The past perfect is also used with till, until, and by the time. The clause with these words usually takes the past simple, and the other clause takes the past perfect.
Past perfect till, until, by the time এর সাথেও ব্যবহৃত হয়। এই শব্দযুক্ত clause টি সাধারণত past simple এ বসে, আর অন্য clause টি past perfect এ বসে।
Examples:
- We refused to trust him until we had known him well.
- By the time the bell rang, the students had finished the exam.
Past Perfect vs Past Simple
Admission and job exams test when the past perfect is truly needed. Use it only when you must show that one past action came before another. If the order is already clear from ‘before’ or ‘after’, the past perfect is often optional, but it is never wrong to use it for the earlier action.
Admission ও job পরীক্ষায় যাচাই করা হয় কখন past perfect সত্যিই দরকার। এটি তখনই ব্যবহার করো যখন দেখাতে হবে একটি অতীত কাজ আরেকটির আগে ঘটেছিল। ‘before’ বা ‘after’ থেকে ক্রম স্পষ্ট হলে past perfect অনেক সময় ঐচ্ছিক, তবে আগের কাজের জন্য এটি ব্যবহার করা কখনো ভুল নয়।
Examples:
- After the sun had set, we started for home. (past perfect shows the earlier action clearly)
- She had left by the time I arrived. (past perfect is needed to show she left first)

A Tip for the Exam
Ask one question: are there two past actions here, and did one clearly happen before the other? If yes, the earlier one takes “had + past participle”. Watch for the three inversion openers, No sooner, Hardly, and Scarcely, because they flip the word order and pair with than and when. Get those pairs right (No sooner … than; Hardly/Scarcely … when), and you will pick up marks that most students miss.
একটি প্রশ্ন করো: এখানে কি দুটি অতীত কাজ আছে, আর একটি কি স্পষ্টভাবে অন্যটির আগে ঘটেছিল? উত্তর হ্যাঁ হলে আগেরটি “had + past participle” এ বসবে। তিনটি inversion শুরু, No sooner, Hardly, Scarcely এর দিকে খেয়াল রাখো, কারণ এরা word order উল্টে দেয় এবং than ও when এর সাথে জোড়া বাঁধে। এই জোড়াগুলো সঠিক করলে (No sooner … than; Hardly/Scarcely … when) তুমি এমন নম্বর পাবে যা বেশিরভাগ শিক্ষার্থী হারায়।

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the past perfect tense?
It expresses an action that was completed before another action or moment in the past, such as “The train had left before I reached the station”.
What is the structure of the past perfect tense?
Subject + had + past participle, for all subjects. The negative is “had not + past participle”, and the question is “Had + subject + past participle?”.
How do I use the past perfect with two past actions?
The action that happened first takes the past perfect, and the later action takes the past simple, joined by ‘before’ or ‘after’.
What is the rule for No sooner, Hardly, and Scarcely?
They invert the verb (“had” before the subject). ‘No sooner’ pairs with ‘than’, while ‘Hardly’ and ‘Scarcely’ pair with ‘when’.
What is the difference between the past perfect and the past simple?
Use the past perfect only to show that one past action came before another. If there is just one past action, or the order is already obvious, the past simple is enough.
