Past Continuous Tense: Rules, Structure & Examples

Learn the past continuous tense: structure, was/were, all its uses, the when vs while rule, past continuous vs past simple, and examples for SSC, HSC, admission, and job exams. With Bengali explanations.

Picture last night at eight o’clock. What were you doing? Maybe you were eating dinner, or you were watching television, or you were studying for a test. You were in the middle of something. That “in the middle of a past moment” feeling is the whole idea of the past continuous tense. It is simple to form, but it does some clever jobs, like showing one action interrupting another, and those jobs are exactly what exams test. This lesson covers all of it, from SSC up to admission and job level.

গতকাল রাত আটটার কথা ভাবো। তুমি তখন কী করছিলে? হয়তো তুমি রাতের খাবার খাচ্ছিলে (were eating), নয়তো টেলিভিশন দেখছিলে (were watching), অথবা পরীক্ষার জন্য পড়ছিলে (were studying)।

What is the Past Continuous Tense?

The past continuous tense expresses an action that was going on at some time in the past (অতীতের কোনো সময়ে চলছিল এমন কাজ)। The action had started but had not yet finished at that moment.

Past continuous tense এমন একটি কাজ প্রকাশ করে যা অতীতের কোনো সময়ে চলছিল। কাজটি শুরু হয়েছিল কিন্তু সেই মুহূর্তে এখনো শেষ হয়নি।

It is one of the twelve tenses and shares its -ing pattern with the present continuous. For the full picture, see our master lesson on 12 Basic English Tenses

Signal words (চিহ্ন): while, when, as, at that time, at 8 pm yesterday, all day yesterday, the whole morning.

The Structure

We use the auxiliary “was / were” with the -ing form of the verb.

আমরা “was / were” এর সাথে verb এর -ing রূপ ব্যবহার করি।

Structure: subject + was/were + (verb + ing).

FormStructureExample
Affirmative (হাঁ-বোধক)subject + was/were + verb-ingShe was writing a letter.
Negative (না-বোধক)subject + was/were + not + verb-ingShe was not writing a letter.
Interrogative (প্রশ্নবোধক)Was/Were + subject + verb-ing?Was she writing a letter?

Which One: was or were?

Choose the auxiliary according to the subject.

Subject অনুযায়ী auxiliary বাছো।

  • Use was with I, he, she, it, and singular subjects (I ও তৃতীয় পুরুষ একবচন): I was reading. She was reading.
  • Use were with we, you, they, and plural subjects (বহুবচন ও ‘you’): They were reading.

Examples:

  • I was cooking when you called.
  • The baby was sleeping peacefully.
  • The students were writing their exam at ten.

The Uses of the Past Continuous Tense

This is the most important part, because the past continuous rarely stands alone. Learn each use.

এটাই সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ, কারণ past continuous খুব কমই একা বসে। প্রতিটি ব্যবহার শেখো।

Use 1: An action in progress at a specific past time.

অতীতের একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে চলমান একটি কাজ।

Examples:

  • At 9 pm last night, I was studying in my room.
  • This time yesterday, we were travelling to Khulna.

Use 2: A long action interrupted by a short one. The long action takes the past continuous, and the short action after ‘when’ takes the past simple.

একটি দীর্ঘ কাজ যা একটি ছোট কাজ দ্বারা বাধাগ্রস্ত হয়। দীর্ঘ কাজটি past continuous এ বসে, আর ‘when’ এর পরের ছোট কাজটি past simple এ বসে।

Examples:

  • I was watching television when the lights went out.
  • She was crossing the road when a car hit her.

Use 3: Two long actions going on at the same time. Use ‘while’, and put both actions in the past continuous.

একই সময়ে চলা দুটি দীর্ঘ কাজ। ‘while’ ব্যবহার করো, আর দুটি কাজকেই past continuous এ রাখো।

Examples:

  • While I was cooking, my brother was cleaning the room.
  • While the teacher was teaching, some boys were whispering.

Use 4: To describe the background or scene in a story.

কোনো গল্পের পটভূমি বা দৃশ্য বর্ণনা করতে।

Examples:

  • The sun was shining and the birds were singing when we set out.
  • A cold wind was blowing as the travellers reached the inn.

Use 5: A repeated past action with ‘always’, to show annoyance.

‘always’ সহ বারবার ঘটা অতীতের একটি কাজ, বিরক্তি বোঝাতে।

Examples:

  • He was always losing his umbrella.
  • They were always arguing about small things.

The ‘When’ vs ‘While’ Rule

This small rule decides many exam answers. As a guide, ‘when’ usually comes before the short action (in the past simple), and ‘while’ usually comes before the long action (in the past continuous).

এই ছোট নিয়মটি পরীক্ষার অনেক উত্তর ঠিক করে দেয়। সাধারণ নিয়ম হিসেবে, ‘when’ সাধারণত ছোট কাজের আগে বসে (past simple এ), আর ‘while’ সাধারণত দীর্ঘ কাজের আগে বসে (past continuous এ)।

Examples:

  • I was sleeping when the alarm rang. (when + short action)
  • While I was sleeping, the alarm rang. (while + long action)

Past Continuous vs Past Simple

Students are often tested on this difference. Use the past simple for a completed action or a quick event. Use the past continuous for an action that was still in progress, often as the background to that event.

শিক্ষার্থীদের প্রায়ই এই পার্থক্য নিয়ে প্রশ্ন করা হয়। সম্পন্ন কাজ বা দ্রুত ঘটনার জন্য past simple ব্যবহার করো। আর যে কাজটি তখনো চলছিল, প্রায়ই সেই ঘটনার পটভূমি হিসেবে, তার জন্য past continuous ব্যবহার করো।

Examples:

  • When I arrived, she was cooking. (she was already in the middle of cooking)
  • When I arrived, she cooked lunch. (she started cooking after I arrived)

Stative Verbs: A Common Trap

Some verbs (Stative Verbs) describe a state, not an action, and are not used in the -ing form. When you meet one, use the past simple instead.

কিছু verb একটি অবস্থা বোঝায়, কাজ নয়, আর এদের -ing রূপে ব্যবহার করা হয় না। এমন verb পেলে past simple ব্যবহার করো।

GroupVerbs
Senses (ইন্দ্রিয়)see, hear, smell, taste, notice
Feelings (অনুভূতি)like, love, hate, want, wish, prefer
Thinking (চিন্তা)know, believe, understand, remember, mean

Examples:

  • Correct: We saw the birds there. (not “were seeing”)
  • Correct: She knew the answer. (not “was knowing”)

A Tip for the Exam

The past continuous almost always works with a second past action, so watch for ‘when’ and ‘while’. The long, ongoing action takes “was/were + verb-ing”, and the short, interrupting action takes the past simple. Keep the pairing in mind: ‘when’ usually goes with the short action, ‘while’ with the long one. And remember the stative trap, verbs like know, love, and see stay in the past simple. Master those, and this tense becomes a source of easy marks.

Past continuous প্রায় সবসময় অতীতের দ্বিতীয় একটি কাজের সাথে কাজ করে, তাই ‘when’ আর ‘while’ এর দিকে খেয়াল রাখো। দীর্ঘ, চলমান কাজটি “was/were + verb-ing” এ বসে, আর ছোট, বাধাদানকারী কাজটি past simple এ বসে। জোড়াটি মনে রাখো: ‘when’ সাধারণত ছোট কাজের সাথে, ‘while’ দীর্ঘ কাজের সাথে। আর stative ফাঁদটি মনে রেখো, know, love, see এর মতো verb past simple এ থাকে। এগুলো আয়ত্ত করলে এই tense সহজ নম্বরের উৎস হয়ে ওঠে।
