Here is something strange about exam grammar: a sentence can sound perfectly smooth to your ear and still be completely wrong. That is the whole trap. Competitive exams like BCS, bank, and university admission tests do not test how nicely you chat; they test whether you know the precise rules.
A wrong preposition or a mismatched verb slips by easily in speech, but the examiner is sitting there hunting for exactly that hidden mistake. Error-spotting and sentence-correction questions carry real marks in every one of these exams, and the good news is that the same handful of errors appear again and again. In this lesson: Common Grammatical Errors, I will train your eyes to catch each of them in a second.
Why Error Questions Feel So Tricky
The reason these questions catch people out is simple: we read with our ear, not with the rulebook. In spoken Bangla-influenced English, many small errors sound completely natural, so they hide in plain sight.
The examiner knows this and builds the sentence around exactly such a habit. So the trick is to stop asking “does this sound right?” and start asking “does each part follow the rule?” That one change in mindset is what separates a high scorer from the rest.
The Error-Spotting Method
Read the whole sentence first, then find the subject and the main verb, because a huge number of errors live right there. After that, check each part against the rules one by one: does the verb match the subject, is the tense consistent, is the preposition right, is the pronoun correct? Move through the sentence like a careful inspector, not a fast reader.
The Most Common Grammatical Errors
Here are the errors examiners test most, each with the rule, the incorrect and correct forms, and a link to the fuller lesson so you can master it deeply.
এখানে পরীক্ষকেরা সবচেয়ে বেশি যেসব ভুল নিয়ে প্রশ্ন করেন, সেগুলো দেওয়া হলো। প্রতিটির সঙ্গে থাকবে নিয়ম, incorrect ও correct form, এবং আরও বিস্তারিতভাবে শেখার জন্য সংশ্লিষ্ট পূর্ণ lesson-এর link।
Error 1: Subject-Verb Disagreement
The single most tested error is a verb that does not match its subject. Find the real subject, decide whether it is singular or plural, and make the verb agree. Beware of a phrase sitting between them, like ‘of books’, it does not change the subject. And remember that ‘each’, ‘every’, ‘everyone’, and ‘each of’ always take a singular verb. Our lesson on subject-verb agreement covers every case.
সবচেয়ে বেশি পরীক্ষিত ভুল হলো এমন verb, যা তার subject-এর সঙ্গে মিলছে না। প্রথমে আসল subject খুঁজে বের করো, তারপর সেটি singular নাকি plural তা নির্ধারণ করো এবং সেই অনুযায়ী verb ব্যবহার করো। মাঝখানে ‘of books’-এর মতো কোনো phrase থাকলে বিভ্রান্ত হয়ো না; এটি subject পরিবর্তন করে না। আর মনে রাখবে, ‘each’, ‘every’, ‘everyone’ এবং ‘each of’-এর সঙ্গে সব সময় singular verb বসে।
এ বিষয়ে সব নিয়ম বিস্তারিতভাবে জানতে আমাদের Subject-Verb Agreement বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- Incorrect: The list of books are on the table. → Correct: The list of books is on the table.
- Incorrect: Each of the boys have a pen. → Correct: Each of the boys has a pen.
Error 2: Wrong Pronoun
Pronoun errors come in three shapes. First, wrong case: after a preposition or as an object, use ‘me’, ‘him’, ‘us’, not ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘we’. Second, wrong order: in a polite sentence, put yourself last, “my friend and I”. Third, wrong agreement: ‘everyone’ and ‘each’ are singular, so use ‘his or her’, and ‘one’ must stay ‘one’s’. See our lesson on the pronoun.
Pronoun-এর ভুল সাধারণত তিন ধরনের হয়। প্রথমত, ভুল case: preposition-এর পরে বা object হিসেবে ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘we’ নয়, বরং ‘me’, ‘him’, ‘us’ ব্যবহার করতে হবে। দ্বিতীয়ত, ভুল ক্রম: ভদ্রভাবে কাউকে উল্লেখ করার সময় নিজের নাম বা pronoun শেষে বসাও, যেমন “my friend and I”। তৃতীয়ত, ভুল agreement: ‘everyone’ এবং ‘each’ singular, তাই তাদের সঙ্গে ‘his or her’ ব্যবহার করতে হবে। আর ‘one’ ব্যবহার করলে পরে ‘one’s’-ই রাখতে হবে।
এ বিষয়ে আরও বিস্তারিত জানতে আমাদের Pronoun বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- Incorrect: Between you and I, it is a secret. → Correct: Between you and me, it is a secret.
- Incorrect: I and my friend went out. → Correct: My friend and I went out.
- Incorrect: Everyone must do their duty. → Correct: Everyone must do his duty.
Error 3: Tense Inconsistency
A sentence must keep its tenses in harmony; do not jump from past to present without a reason. Use the past perfect for the earlier of two past actions, turn ‘will’ into ‘would’ in reported speech, and remember that a universal truth stays in the simple present even inside a past sentence. Our lessons on tenses and right forms of verbs go deeper.
একটি sentence-এ tense-এর সামঞ্জস্য বজায় রাখতে হবে; কোনো কারণ ছাড়া past থেকে present-এ চলে যেয়ো না। অতীতের দুটি কাজের মধ্যে যেটি আগে ঘটেছে, সেটির জন্য past perfect ব্যবহার করো। reported speech-এ ‘will’ পরিবর্তন করে ‘would’ করতে হবে। আর universal truth সব সময় simple present-এ থাকে, এমনকি সেটি কোনো past sentence-এর মধ্যেও থাকলেও।
এ বিষয়ে আরও বিস্তারিত জানতে আমাদের Tenses এবং Right Forms of Verbs বিষয়ক পাঠগুলো পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- Incorrect: He said that he will come. → Correct: He said that he would come.
- Incorrect: The teacher said that the earth moved round the sun. → Correct: The teacher said that the earth moves round the sun.
Error 4: Wrong Preposition
Exams love a wrong preposition. Some words take a fixed preposition (good at, married to, afraid of), and some verbs take none at all (discuss, enter, marry, resemble). Learn the fixed pairs by heart, and never add a preposition where none belongs. Our lesson on appropriate prepositions has the full list.
পরীক্ষায় ভুল preposition নিয়ে খুবই বেশি প্রশ্ন আসে। কিছু word-এর সঙ্গে নির্দিষ্ট preposition বসে, যেমন good at, married to, afraid of।
Examples:
- Incorrect: He is good in English. → Correct: He is good at English.
- Incorrect: Let us discuss about the matter. → Correct: Let us discuss the matter.
Error 5: Article Errors
Articles trip up many students. Use ‘a’ before a consonant sound and ‘an’ before a vowel sound, judging by sound not spelling (an hour, a university). Use ‘the’ before superlatives, unique things, and rivers or seas, and do not drop it where the sentence needs it. See our lesson on articles.
Article-এর ব্যবহারে অনেক শিক্ষার্থী ভুল করে। consonant sound-এর আগে ‘a’ এবং vowel sound-এর আগে ‘an’ ব্যবহার করো।
Examples:
- Incorrect: He is an university student. → Correct: He is a university student.
- Incorrect: She is honest girl. → Correct: She is an honest girl.
Error 6: Adjective Used for Adverb
An adjective describes a noun, but an adverb describes a verb, so never swap them. After an action verb, you need an adverb, not an adjective. It is “He runs fast” and “She sings sweetly”, never “runs quick” or “sings sweet”. Our lessons on the adjective and adverb explain this.
Adjective noun-কে বর্ণনা করে, আর adverb verb-কে বর্ণনা করে। তাই এ দুটিকে কখনো অদলবদল কোরো না। Action verb-এর পরে adjective নয়, adverb দরকার। তাই সঠিক হবে “He runs fast” এবং “She sings sweetly”; “runs quick” বা “sings sweet” নয়। এ বিষয়ে আরও বিস্তারিত জানতে আমাদের Adjective এবং Adverb বিষয়ক পাঠগুলো পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- Incorrect: He runs very quick. → Correct: He runs very quickly.
- Incorrect: She sings sweet. → Correct: She sings sweetly.
Error 7: Wrong Degree and Comparison
Comparison has its own traps. Never use a double comparative or superlative (more better, most cleverest). When you compare one thing with the rest of its own group, add ‘other’ (“than any other boy”). And always compare like with like (“greater than that of Delhi”, not “than Delhi”). Our lesson on degree change covers the rules.
Comparison-এর ক্ষেত্রেও কিছু সাধারণ ফাঁদ আছে। কখনো double comparative বা double superlative ব্যবহার কোরো না, যেমন more better বা most cleverest। একটি ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে তার নিজের একই দলের অন্যদের সঙ্গে তুলনা করলে ‘other’ ব্যবহার করতে হবে, যেমন “than any other boy”। আর সব সময় একই ধরনের জিনিসের সঙ্গে একই ধরনের জিনিস তুলনা করো। যেমন, “greater than that of Delhi” সঠিক, কিন্তু “greater than Delhi” ভুল।
এ বিষয়ে আরও বিস্তারিত জানতে আমাদের Degree Change বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- Incorrect: He is the most cleverest boy. → Correct: He is the cleverest boy.
- Incorrect: He is taller than any boy in the class. → Correct: He is taller than any other boy in the class.
Error 8: Wrong Correlative Conjunctions
Some conjunctions come in fixed pairs and must be used exactly. It is ‘not only … but also’, ‘either … or’, ‘neither … nor’, ‘though … yet’ (never ‘though … but’), and ‘scarcely / hardly … when’ (never ‘than’). Place each half right before the words it joins. Our lesson on the conjunction lists them.
কিছু conjunction নির্দিষ্ট pair হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং সেগুলো ঠিক সেইভাবেই ব্যবহার করতে হয়। যেমন: ‘not only … but also’, ‘either … or’, ‘neither … nor’, ‘though … yet’ (কখনো ‘though … but’ নয়), এবং ‘scarcely / hardly … when’ (কখনো ‘than’ নয়)। প্রতিটি pair-এর দুই অংশকে ঠিক সেই word বা অংশের আগে বসাও, যেগুলোকে তারা যুক্ত করছে। এ ধরনের আরও conjunction জানতে আমাদের Conjunction বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- Incorrect: Though he is rich but he is kind. → Correct: Though he is rich, yet he is kind.
- Incorrect: Scarcely had he come than it rained. → Correct: Scarcely had he come when it rained.
Error 9: Faulty Parallelism
When you list actions or ideas, keep them all in the same grammatical form. Do not mix an -ing form with a ‘to’ form in the same series. It is “She likes reading, writing, and dancing”, not “reading, writing, and to dance”.
কোনো sentence-এ একাধিক কাজ বা ভাব তালিকাভুক্ত করলে সবগুলোকে একই grammatical form-এ রাখতে হবে। একই ধারায় -ing form-এর সঙ্গে ‘to + verb’ form মিশিয়ো না।
সঠিক হবে: “She likes reading, writing, and dancing.”
ভুল হবে: “She likes reading, writing, and to dance.”
Examples:
- Incorrect: She likes dancing, to swim, and reading. → Correct: She likes dancing, swimming, and reading.
Error 10: Redundancy (Saying It Twice)
Redundancy means using an extra word that repeats a meaning already there. ‘Return back’, ‘repeat again’, and ‘more better’ each carry a needless word. Say it once, cleanly: ‘return’, ‘repeat’, ‘better’.
Redundancy বলতে এমন অতিরিক্ত word ব্যবহার বোঝায়, যা আগে থেকেই প্রকাশিত একই অর্থ আবার পুনরাবৃত্তি করে। ‘Return back’, ‘repeat again’ এবং ‘more better’—প্রতিটিতেই একটি অপ্রয়োজনীয় word রয়েছে। তাই সংক্ষিপ্ত ও সঠিকভাবে বলো: ‘return’, ‘repeat’, ‘better’।
Examples:
- Incorrect: Please return back my book. → Correct: Please return my book.
- Incorrect: He is more better now. → Correct: He is better now.
Error 11: Misplaced or Dangling Modifiers
A modifier must sit close to the word it describes, or the sentence turns unclear or funny. “Sitting on the gate, a scorpion stung him” wrongly makes the scorpion do the sitting; rewrite it so the right person is doing the action. Our lesson on the use of modifiers explains this fully.
Modifier যে word-টিকে বর্ণনা করে, তার কাছাকাছি বসতে হবে। তা না হলে sentence-এর অর্থ অস্পষ্ট বা হাস্যকর হয়ে যেতে পারে। যেমন, “Sitting on the gate, a scorpion stung him” sentence-এ ভুলভাবে মনে হয় যে বিচ্ছুটিই গেটের ওপর বসেছিল। তাই sentence-টি এমনভাবে পুনর্লিখতে হবে, যাতে যে ব্যক্তি আসলে কাজটি করছে, তার সঙ্গেই modifier-এর সম্পর্ক স্পষ্ট হয়।
এ বিষয়ে বিস্তারিত জানতে আমাদের Use of Modifiers বিষয়ক পাঠটি পড়তে পারো।
Examples:
- Incorrect: Sitting on the gate, a scorpion stung him. → Correct: While he was sitting on the gate, a scorpion stung him.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not trust the sentence just because it sounds fluent. The examiner builds errors out of things that sound natural in everyday speech, so check every part against the rule, not against your ear.
- Do not stop at the first thing that looks odd. Sometimes the real error is elsewhere, or there is no error at all. Check the whole sentence before you commit to an answer.
- Do not forget the small, high-frequency traps: ‘each of’ plus a singular verb, ‘than any other’, ‘discuss’ with no preposition, and ‘though … yet’. These same few rules are tested over and over, so learn them cold.
- Do not ignore the “No error” option. Some sentences are already correct, and choosing an error where none exists is a common way to lose marks. If every part follows the rules, “No error” is the answer.
- ছোট কিন্তু বারবার আসা ফাঁদগুলো ভুলে যেয়ো না: ‘each of’-এর সঙ্গে singular verb, ‘than any other’, ‘discuss’-এর পরে কোনো preposition নয়, এবং ‘though … yet’।
Practice Exercise with Answers

- (b) — use has submitted (each of + singular verb); also ‘their’ should be ‘his or her’.
- (b) — use was (subject is ‘quality’, singular).
- (b) — use to me (senior takes ‘to’, not ‘than’).
- (b) — use singers (one of the best + plural noun).
- (b) — use was (neither of + singular verb).
- (b) — use he would help (reported speech).
- (b) — use to meeting (look forward to + -ing).
- (b) — use to discuss (no preposition after discuss).
Part B (corrected): 9. He runs faster than his brother. (no double comparative) 10. One should keep one’s promises. (keep ‘one’ throughout) 11. She is good at mathematics. (fixed preposition) 12. Though he is poor, yet he is honest. (though … yet) 13. The population of Dhaka is larger than that of Khulna. (compare like with like) 14. Rahim and I will go to the market. (put yourself last) 15. He is the tallest boy in the class. (no double superlative) 16. Please return my pen. (no redundancy)
A Tip for the Exam
The way to win at error questions is to become a rule-checker, not an ear-reader. Train yourself to run a quick checklist on every sentence: subject and verb agreement, tense harmony, correct preposition, right pronoun, proper degree, and clean parallelism.
The same small set of errors comes back in exam after exam, so once you have drilled these eleven, you will recognise most questions instantly. Practise ten error-spotting sentences a day, always checking why each answer is right, and this scoring topic will soon feel effortless.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most common grammatical errors in competitive exams?
The most common errors are subject-verb disagreement, wrong pronouns, tense inconsistency, wrong prepositions, article mistakes, using an adjective for an adverb, wrong degree of comparison, faulty correlative conjunctions, broken parallelism, redundancy, and misplaced modifiers.
How do I solve error-spotting questions quickly?
Read the sentence, find the subject and verb first, then check each part against the rules: agreement, tense, preposition, pronoun, degree, and parallelism. Do not rely on what “sounds right”, because exams test rules, not fluency.
Why do correct-sounding sentences get marked wrong?
Because many small errors sound natural in everyday speech but break a formal grammar rule. Examiners build sentences around exactly these habits, so you must check by rule, not by ear.
What is a redundancy error?
Redundancy is using an extra word that repeats an existing meaning, such as ‘return back’, ‘repeat again’, or ‘more better’. The correct forms are ‘return’, ‘repeat’, and ‘better’.
Should I always find an error in these questions?
No. Some sentences are already correct, and the right answer is “No error”. Choosing an error where none exists is a common way to lose marks, so check the whole sentence first.
