What are Countable Nouns?
A countable noun is a thing you can count. It has both a singular and a plural form (গোনা যায়, singular ও plural দুটোই আছে)।

What are Uncountable Nouns?
An uncountable noun is a thing you cannot count as separate units. It usually has only a singular form (আলাদা করে গোনা যায় না, সাধারণত শুধু singular)।

A Quick Test for Countability
Not sure which one a noun is? Put a number in front of it. If it works, the noun is countable; if it sounds wrong, it is uncountable.

How to Count Uncountable Nouns
You cannot count uncountable nouns directly, but you can count them with a partitive, a small phrase like ‘a piece of’ or ‘a glass of’.
Uncountable noun সরাসরি গোনা যায় না, কিন্তু একটি partitive দিয়ে গোনা যায়, যেমন ‘a piece of’ বা ‘a glass of’ এর মতো ছোট একটি phrase দিয়ে।
Examples:
- a piece of advice / information / furniture / news
- a glass of water, a cup of tea
- a slice of bread, a loaf of bread
- a kilo of rice, a bottle of oil
So we say “two pieces of advice”, never “two advices”.

Quantifiers: Which Words Go With Which
This is the heart of the exam. Some quantity words go only with countable nouns, some only with uncountable, and some with both. These words are a type of determiner.

Verb Agreement with Uncountable Nouns

Almost every question on this topic starts with one decision: is the noun countable or uncountable? Make that choice first, and the rest follows. Countable takes many, a few, and a plural s; uncountable takes much, a little, a singular verb, and no plural. Keep the danger list in mind, information, advice, furniture, news, and work are uncountable, no matter how countable they feel. Answer in that order, and you will not slip.
